Picked up a 1940 EG in 300 with a J.Unertl 4x Hawk scope on it. It has the post and crosshair reticle. What can you tell me about this scope? Anything special?
Thanks
I had a 4x Hawk with regular crosshairs , I didn't care much for it as the crosshairs were not permanently centered. YMMV
Mike
The factory will not service them anymore.
I too had a 4x Hawk. It was mounted on a Model 20 I owned back around '89-'90. I rather liked it. The cross hairs weren't centered, but back in the late 40's early 50's not many were. The optics were good, as are any with Unertl's name on them. Granted, it's no Schmidt&Bender, or Zeiss, or Leupold for that matter- but taken in the context of the era it was made in it's pretty good. I think they were better scopes than the Weavers/ Redfields back then, on a par with Bausch&Lomb. I would mount one on a period rifle in a heartbeat.
They are orphans, but I understand there are independent outfits that can rebuild them if necessary. (at least I have seen used Unertls advertised as having been recently rebuilt)
I highly recommend Parsons Scope Repair Service. He did excellent work on 2 Unertl Ultra Varmint scopes for me. Contact

Granpas '99 has a Unertl Hawk, and a Jeager side mount.
I have a Winchester Model 43 Deluxe with a Hawk on it and it's served well for many years.

I'm sorta partial to my 2.75 Falcon sittin' in a Buehler one piece on a 300 T with PCH reticle.
Sounds like it's nothing special.
Thanks
Nash I've seen your Hawk go for 100 on GB and that with a fine CH reticle. I wouldn't throw it away for an old Weaver.
Don't worry, it won't get thrown away. Never shot a post, I need to take it out and shoot it to see if I like it or not.
Thanks
