Here I am on a bear hunt last year. In the group pic I am on the left. Had a blast in Maine! Lots of hunting, fishing and interesting people. Not familiar with 99's at this point. One may accompany me on our next trip. Bear is 125#s. I shot the first one I saw. My motto on this trip was "If it's black it's going back". Hello everyone! I am new to the group and thought I would throw in a pic and bid you greetings from Mississippi. My son and I hunt with 99s in .300 Savage. After the season is over I plan on freshening both of them up. This looked like a good group to get some info and share some stories.

Welcome to the forum, and nice pic! Gotta love dead hogs..

If "freshening up" means refinishing, I wouldn't touch that one you're showing. May not be collector quality, but it's a good looking rifle.
Oh No! not re-finishing. They both have a nice patina. Some touch up on the stocks and a good disassembly and cleaning.

I love it. Although that rifle wasn't originally drilled and tapped, I think the scope just looks right on it. It is a tack driver, and although I've owned, shot, and hunted with it for several years now, I've not yet had to touch the adjustments. I would think that mount would be hard to locate unless it came with a scope.

Looks like a BalVar 4.That would make it variable 2 1/2 to 4x. Great scope.Had one with Post reticle on a Mod 70 that I should have kept. Have a BalVar 8 1 1/2 to 8X on a 99 250-3000.The mounts used with it are Leupold adjusto mounts.Very clean set up.

Those are my glove liners. Gloves were in the hunting shack. Don't want some bubba thinkin' the white was the back end of a deer and take a pot shot at me.
Need the old cartridge belt to complete the outfit. Looking good- white gloves match the whiskers. Tom
You've just got to love the "old school" red and black plaid wool. So sad it's no longer legal where I hunt. frown
They even tell you what you can wear now? Gotta love the govt. Always looking out for us.
FB2
Isn't it amazing how many of us survived childhood in the 50s without the government watching out for us? Riding in cars without seat belts, riding in back end of a pick up, going to the old swimming hole without life jackets, telling us what to eat, what to drink, and what shots we needed, how to raise a baby.
I guess now we have to be advised if we wear boxers or "tightie whities."
Yup. In Wisconsin if it ain't about 50% blaze orange you're wrong. frown
We need 250 square inches of orange, or at least a hat. Ironic, the only hunting accident involving someone I knew was a guy dressed in orange head-to-toe. Then there was the dead guy found by a buddy who was dressed in an orange hunting suit too, but that turned out to be a murder.

So this wouldn't cut it. I hunt several different areas and never had a problem. I would SERIOUSLY find another place to hunt.

Have to wear orange on chest, back and head here in Nebraska.

That's a 1942 Swiss K31, 7.5x55mm caliber. It's a very accurate rifle.
Here's a little more about these rifles:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K31

The 7.5x55 Swiss is similar to the .300 Savage in performance.

I like those rifles, but I get a kick out of the beer keg looking bolt knob.
Ahhh.....Mickey Mouse boots, ugly but I'd never go ice fishing without them, best darn boots on the planet.
We call them bunny boots up here. But as I understand it, the Mickey Mouse boots were different in that they didn't have the air valves on them, just multiple layers of felt. But I've heard it different too. And yeah, they are the only boots I know of that you can fill with water at below zero, dump them out, and your feet will still be warm.
Pardon me if I missed it, but what cartridge is that 99 loaded for bear?

If you're talking to me, I'm just learning the 99, but for my Ruger .308 I load 168 grain Seirra HPBTs in front of 43 grains of IMR 4064. That is what I was carrying in the 99 today. I had good luck with the 99 firing that load on the range at 100yds the other day.
It doesn't take much to break down a black bear up here. We have giant brown bear, but the blacks are usually small.
It's warmer up here this year than many places in the L48. My boy and I were walking around in 39 degree weather, and that should make the blackies wake up.
Yes, I was asking you about the cartridge.

Thanks
Given that I was issued "Mickey Mouse" boots courtesy of my Uncle Sam they did have air valves and came in both black and white. The air valves were there because depending on the temp the warmth of your feet could cause them to over inflate thus the need to bleed off some of the air from time to time. To us "Bunny Boots" are just big old kinda sorta white boots with a felt liner. But then, I'm down here. grin
165 grain broadhead, heart shot, 8 yds, 510 lbs., my place in Bayfield Co., WI, delicious!

Nice picture Rick. Congratulations! Is he going to be part of the menu for SavageFest 2014 ?
Yes! More in the freezer.
I slow cooked a loin last week. It's absolutely wonderful. I would describe it similar to a beef roast in looks, color, texture and flavor is close to beef also but a little more sweet.

The tentative plan is for the Saturday evening meal to include a game feed among other fix'ins on site. Any and all are welcome to contribute, deer, turkey, bison, gator or whatever you'd like if it is possible for you. PM me if interested and any special needs.
Going all-out Savage today in anticipation of Savage Fest and even swiped a new avatar. Here's my mug. I usually don't wear the helmet around town.

I just saw your post on the big game forum. Congratulations. 'Bout all I can say. Between my wife, son, and I, we have accounted for 7. Both bulls and cows. To me moose hunting is the greatest. Great job, twinray.
Hey thanks. It's a wonder that between both of us, there are any Moose left.😄

He's telling the truth. I loaned him the car.

I started on page one checkin out all the guys and gals. Had to laugh at this one. Yep, Gary ain't foolin ya. I know cause that's the one my wife made me get rid of cause she doesn't like RED cars. When I got my new Black Testarossa, I gave the little Red one to Gary. The Black one has about 8500 miles on it, so it's about time to get rid of it. Anybody want it? Joe.

That's about a pretty deer right there.
Thanks. The pic actually doesn't do him justice.
Brought a few home over the yrs, the kids and ol lady not really impressed.

So I cut the head off to maybe go euro mount.

My gal comes out and sees my bud and I unloading gear and goes "you dumbass!"

I was like????

This thing was only 131" gross, and I got a 166" net on the wall already.

She was stomping mad and said that it was the prettiest deer I ever brought home, or that she'd seen up close and I should had it mounted by a top notch taxi.

Oh well.

Never seen her so bent about a friggin' deer.

Won't eat or cook the stuff for anybody (I do it, the kids love it)............but all freaked out over not getting a deer mounted. Strange.

Neighbor says two decent ones been hitting our spot.
Proly kill a relative of this one, maybe 150".

Since IN does their records thing at 140 min.........I figure no gun kills mounted unless they top that. Of course any recurve bow kill over 125" net is getting mounted........but I doubt that will ever happen. My days of recurve are not much longer.

That appears to be a handy rig you have there. I'd smile if I had that to hold. smile
He is smiling! You don't want to see him when he's not. wink grin

2013 with a beard...but who cares about that. Getting this deer with the 99EG is what made the hunt really special. BTW, the deer isn't as big as the picture makes it look.

Looks great to me! Much bigger than our 78 pound spike WV hill deer, Joe.

Now that's what a hunter looked like when I was coming up in the 60's and 70's! I still have my buffalo plaid Woolrich Pennsylvania Tuxedo and hat. Somehow it shrunk or I'd still be hunting in it.
My first post here. Takedown 99, .250-3000, took my first buck with it almost 60 years ago.
Welcome neighbor, I'm in Rogue River.

Just bought my first Model 99 .250-3000. It was made in 1949 (per David Royal's excellent book) or 1950 according to the online serial number lookup. The serial number is 529636. The lever boss code is 23 with what was likely an A, it's just too faint to tell.

I'm hoping someone can help me identify the letter designation for this gun.

Greg
Greg, that's a darned pretty gun.. it almost surely started out life as a 99EG, but the stock got a heck of an aftermarket upgrade somewhere along the line.

If the front of the receiver has SAVAGE MODEL 99 stamped to the side so that you can see it beside the scope bases, it started life as a model 99R. The 99R's were drilled for scope bases at that time, the 99EG's weren't (well... 99.9% of them weren't, we see an occasional early oddball EG that is drilled, but very uncommon).

Welcome to the campfire!
Thank you! I was afraid someone was going to tell me that the wood was not original.
I shot this buck November 13, 2018 on my place in Milam County in central Texas with my 1966 Savage 99E in .308. He was big old boy with a non-typical rack counting 16 or 17 points.

Now he hangs out in our kitchen:

Downside is that it's not original. Upside is that it's 10x as pretty as original wood would be. If it was a rare model and cartridge, I'd be bummed that a real collectible had been altered and the value might have dropped.. but 99EG's and 99R's are very common and I personally don't think that stock hurts the value at all, probably the reverse.

Texgunner, heck of a cool rack on that guy!
