Awhile back I purchased a Lyman 41 receiver sight for a Savage 340 .30-30 rifle. The screws that came with the sight seemed to be the original Lyman screws - 8-40 - and were much too small. I then determined that the proper screw size for my rifle is 10-32. Is this typical for the 340 rifles?
I have a Savage 340 with a Lyman sight. Almost certain screws are 8-40 on mine. Mine is the "Deluxe" model. Not D/T for scope mounts. Could your have been done after market? I do not know if all 340's came from the factory with this provision.
I checked my 340 222 rem, and 342 22 Hornet and they are both 10-32. The 30-30 is not here for me to check. I do however remember some confusion when looking for the proper screws to mount a WFC 175 and a Lyman 41. When it returns I can check it for you if needed.
Would anyone know if my model 4C and a WFC 150 would use the 10-32?

The plug screws seem to be factory issue, so I believe the holes were 10-32 when they left the factory. I think that I ran into this same situation with a Mossberg Model 45 a few years ago.
Brian, no 4C but I have a 7A and it is D&t'ed for a 10-32. Also checked 5 ea. #150 sights and the holes are for the 10-32 diameter screw and the screws that are with them (original?) are 10-32's.
Ok, Thanks, Rick. In meeting with GeneB yesterday, we decided that they were probably 10-32.
So where to get 10-32 filister head screws? They must be rare, because Lightfoot doesn't even have any!
Doing some guessing:
If the Lyman 41 was installed at the factory it might have used 8-40 because that's how the Lyman was designed.
The standard receiver sight was the #175 which I think used the 10-32. There for, there might be a problem trying to use a 41 on a non-deluxe rifle.
Finding 10-32 threaded screws is easy.
Finding blued 10-32 gun screws is not so easy, unless I am overlooking the obvious.
Brownells sells a screw kit that has 10-32 screws in them. Don
I went to my local hardware store (not ACE) and bought some. You folks would laugh: they are brass! Hey, you don't think that brass screws look out of place on a classic Savage 340 - do you ??? Well maybe, just a little. But they would color up nicely with a little cold blue!
