Here is my next offering for sale.

For Sale Savage 99F in 250-3000. Good honest gun. I think It is all original except sling eyes have been added. It has the lever safety. All numbers match. It is factory drilled and tapped for a scope. There are a few small scratches where scope bases have been mounted on it in the past but I think they could easily be buffed out. It currently has a Lyman peep mounted on it. Serial number is 7774XX. I would estimate that the wood is 95% or better and the bluing is 90% or better but I am not an expert on this so I suggest you look at the photos for the best description. I would like to get $900 including shipping in a hard plastic case to your FFL. I feel this is a fair price for a Savage in this condition however I will consider offers. I will ship within 24 hours of receiving a USPS Money Order and a signed copy of FFL. I will give you three days to review the item and will refund all money minus $25 for shipping if it is not as described. Send me a PM if interested.

I am also selling a 99R in 300 and a 99H in 22HP. Look for those in other posts.

Not a saddle gun, they were straight stocked, can't see the top of the barrel but i'd guess its an F, does the rear sight sit on top of a boss in the barrel?

Johno, I thought it was a 99F also but the barrel address clearly say 99A. I am so confused!

No boss on the barrel.

99A Westfield on barrel but serial # on action would be Chicopee

Barrel addy is to late for the serial number. Maybe the best 250 ever, pre mill looks with a post mill twist!!!
Posted By: Jacks Pa Re: 99A for sale - 05/02/11
I pulled the forarm wood and the buttplate. Numbers on wood and buttplate match. There are no numbers on the barrel under the forarm except a big ol' F and a small SP.

Yep, would be a GREAT hunting rifle. If this comes down to a hunting rifle price I will be very interested. Nice looking gun, save for the rust, which is an easy fix.

Can you check rifle twist?
Posted By: Jacks Pa Re: 99A for sale - 05/02/11
Safari,

I am will to entertain reasonable offers. Send me a PM.

KK, how do I check twist? Can I do it myself or can a gunsmith do it?
Posted By: johno Re: 99A for sale - 05/02/11
Well whatever it is its going to make someone a nice hunting rifle.

Not to hi jack JPs thread, but some funny things happened with the later guns.
Do you recall the 99A 308win, I put a photo up of. Post mil with 99A stamped on receiver and barrel. But with a pistol grip stock, cut checkering from a 99C. There was some question if it was a parts gun. I don't believe it was, it came to N.Z. as a new rifle sold through a dealer. All metal to wood fit was very good and looks original

Hard to tell who the winner might be on this one!!!???
Posted By: kk alaska Re: 99A for sale - 05/02/11
To check twist take a cleaning rod and a tight patch or brush, mark rod and count rotation, measure distance per 1 turn. Its either 1 turn in 10" or 1 turn in 14". If its 1 in 10 its golden IMHO.

Wonder if Savage replaced that barrel, or a good smith?
Posted By: 300jimmy Re: 99A for sale - 05/13/11
BOY O' BOY. I'd have to say Savage replaced. You couldn't just take a 70's Westfield barrel with sharp vee threads and screw it into a 50's Chicopee receiver with square threads........how'd you pull that off without a Savage barrel blank or setting the barrel back a long way?
Posted By: Longbeardking Re: 99A for sale - 05/13/11
If savage did it, there would be "RP" stamped on the top rear of the barrel.
Posted By: 300jimmy Re: 99A for sale - 05/13/11
Looks like there is a mark there in the picture but I can't make it out. Maybe the buyer will enlighten us with a close up pic.
Posted By: boswellbuckhunter Re: 99A for sale - 05/13/11

I'm unable to get any good pictures of the barrel right now from inside, because I'm getting alot of flash. I'll try some outside pictures tomorrow. I did take a couple pictures inside that aren't real clear.

I'll try to describe the rifle the best I can.

The serial # on the rifle is 7774xx which puts it around 1955 or 1956. The entire rifle, except for the barrel appears to be an "F". All numbers match with the hollow stock, which is labeled "F" etc. etc.
The barrel puzzles me. It is 22" long, with a folding leaf rear sight and a gold bead front sight on a removable ramp. In looking through "Murrays", this barrell type didn't come out till the 70's. There are several markings on the barrel. The stamp on the top of the barrel is hard to read, but looks to be "SP". Just above the rear of the forearm is stamped the letter "S". Underneath the forearm is stamped a large "F" and right beside it is stamped "SP" encircled. The barrel address is also confusing. I can't find an identical barrel address in "Murrays". The barrell address is just like the barrel address shown at the bottom of page 3-83 in "Murrays", which is listed for the 358. The only difference in this barrel is that it says Model 99A instead Model 99 and lists 250 Sav. as the caliber. This barrel looks exactly like the one shown on the 358 in "Murrays".
Whoever put this barrel on, whether it was a gunsmith or at the factory, it looks perfect. There are no signs of it being re-barrelled.
Here's some pics...( I put a weaver K2.5 on it....)

Where's the barrel boss?
Posted By: lovemy99 Re: 99A for sale - 05/13/11
does the forearm have the boss area cut into it? Wonder if the later barrel would have been wide enough to require that the forearm channel be widen enough to take it out completely.

Sounds like a factory rework to me with all of the SP stamps.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: 99A for sale - 05/13/11
Gotta say it sure looks like a factory repair. 70's barrel put onto a 50's rifle. Something a little different, now you have to let us know how it shoots!
Posted By: boswellbuckhunter Re: 99A for sale - 05/13/11

This rifle has a straight tapered barrel and the forearm fits the barrel. It doesn't have the boss area cut into it like the "F"'s usually do....

I can't wait to shoot this thing. All my other 250-3000's have the 1/14 twist and I only shoot the 87 grain bullets. I have about 7 boxes of factory ammo that are 100 gr. that I'm going to try. I have some Barnes triple-shock 100 gr. tsx boattail's I want to try re-loading later on. Might go to the range this weekend.

Is the rotor brass or aluminum?

Been having some personal problems and haven't been to the range in a while. I've been dying to shoot this rifle that I got from John and see how it does with 100 gr. bullets. None of my other 250-3000's stabilize the 100 gr.'s very well, but this one has a Westfield barrell. I ended up putting a Leupold M8-3X on it. I used factory Remington 100 gr. pointed soft points. It took me 6 shots to get it sighted in. The target below were shots 7, 8, and 9. I'll shoot it again before whitetail season, but this will be the rifle I take to the woods on the first day of Pa. deer season.

Is that a 3 shot group, or were you still dialing the scope in between each shot?

three shot group....

Not great, but I was in a hurry...Took three rifles to the range to sight in with different scopes. Another 250-3000 and a 300 savage. I probably have a twenty rifles that I haven't shot yet, or have to sight in with a different scope or sight. By deer season They'll all be ready.

Posted By: Calhoun Re: 99A for sale - 06/27/11
I hear you there, got a bunch I need to get out and do load workup on. Discounting the high one as a fluke, that group may not be too bad. Definitely worth taking out again and checking. Do love the 250's though.
Posted By: boltman Re: 99A for sale - 06/28/11
Any of those shots would be a dead deer....
Posted By: Skidrow Re: 99A for sale - 06/28/11
That's minute of deer for a long ways off.
Posted By: federali Re: 99A for sale - 06/28/11
This thread has been an educational experience. I'm sure Jacks PA was offering the rifle in good faith. That said, I'm impressed with how you guys were able to figure out the ancestry of this particular rifle. Had I run into this rifle in a gunshop, it would have fooled me. As someone here said, it's a great hunter and shooter but not collector grade, therefore, not at a collector grade price.
