Hello Folks!



I've got a question here that I know is very subjective. My grandfather is looking to sell his 99f. Cosmetically it has one issue. Somebody had something on their thumb and left a thumbprint on the receiver. We don't know what it is or how it happened, but it's there. Outside of that, the blueing and wood are pristine.

I've checked gunbroker and got a ballpark idea on the rifle itself. What I can't find info on is what the Redfield 2 3/4 widefield (television) scope that is on it is going for?

He also has some ammo and brass (40 rounds of ammo, I think) he's wanting to go with it.

What would be a ballpark fair price on this package?

Is it in 300 Savage? Guessing so, based on the ammo.

Redfield, to me, wouldn't add to the value at all. Might be better to separate and sell on ebay if they are worth anything there.

Are you looking to sell to a friend/family, or get best price? If best price, gunbroker may be your best avenue. Start low and let it get bid up.

The scope doesn't add a lot of value, maybe $50-100. If I saw the rifle, scope, and ammo for sale at a gunshow in this part of the country I'd expect to pay around $650-750.

The way things are now Id go about 75-100 bucks lower then what Phil99 said! but thats just me!

A few things, can we see a pic of the finger print? Also, I suggest the white line spacer on the p/g cap be removed prior to sale. I would suggest, as others have, that the scope be removed. It really will add no value, at least to a collector and this gun could be seen as a collector quality depending on how bad the finger print is.

300Fs are in general common. However, they are not so common in very good shape and without sling swivels.

If the decision has been made that the gun will be sold, take a LOT of really good pictures, give a really good description, be available to answer questions, and post the gun for sale on gunbroker with a $1 start and no reserve. I have seen it over and over and over... this REALLY is the best way to sell a gun and get the true market value.

If your grandfather has decided that if he would rather keep it if he can not get XXXX for it, then put a reserve on it. It will turn off some buyers but I have no real issue with it. However, I can not really understand not disclosing the reserve. You either ARE willing to take a certain amount for it, or you are not. I would post the reserve in the auction description. This way all potential buyers know the minimum they might get the rifle for. Some might try to wait until the last second to bid but GB has a 15 minute rule and this could lead to a bidding war at the end that could easily see the price escalate rapidly. Worst case, one person puts in the reserve bid at the end and you sell the gun for amount you are willing to accept.

Also, do not try to make money off shipping... that just turns buyers off. This gun can easily be shipped, fully insured with UPS ground for about $30.

If it were me...I would split it up and auction the ammo, scope and gun separately.

I could see the brass an ammo bringing 40-50, the scope 70-80 and the gun 550-600.

I don't think you'll get the same money if you keep it all together.

I don't see many 99F's in 300 Savage bringing $550 to $600 online. Maybe at retail stores or gun shows?

Really nice pre-mil 300F with that hasn't been drilled for swivels studs? Don't see many pre-mil F's without swivel studs

I'll buy all of them I can for 550, course I don't know what this thumb print looks like on this one.

Paid 600 for my 95%+ 300F, no extra holes, and felt like I stole it.

A bloody thumb from a hunting trip will etch a nice print on a gun if not cleaned. Also, some folks just have more oils and acids in their prints than others. This is all I could contribute to this thread. All of my 99s are tomato stakes

I don't know if it is just the pictures, but it looks like there is some other freckling there too.

That might clean up a little bit, but is definitely going to affect the value of the gun in my opinion.

Seeing that......can't see that one bringing 550-600.

I'm thinking more like 400-450 now, 500 might be a stretch, but you never know, I've seen some crazy chit happen.

0000 steel wool or bronze wool and gun oil to remove the surface rust. No need to put too much elbow grease into it.

That rifle would bring up to $650 in northern New England ,the Redfield is probably worth close to $100 by itself. Don
