At the Novi Michigan gunshow today I ran across a .300 Savage Model 20. Serial #70XX. It's not a bad specimen, aside from one thing: THE BOLT IS MISSING.

The good news: the stock is uncut, and the receiver doesn't have any extra scope-mount holes. Original sling loop eyes, grip cap and buttplate are present. The stock has some nice figure in the grain.

The down-side (aside from the missing bolt): the stock has a repairable crack on the left side of the forend tip, the barrel has some surface pitting and some areas where it's been steel wooled (not bad). Rear sight has been replaced with a little folding Marble's.

I bought the thing right, figuring I could part it out, but I wonder if there are other options. Maybe somebody has a beater Model 20 that they want to salvage the bolt from and swap into this rifle? Maybe somebody has an extra bolt? Any ideas?

My plan as of right now is to list the stock on eBay, but if there is interest in other parts please let me know.

Brian (Docost) had a 20 at the fest in a sporter stock and was talkin about getting new wood for it. might be a good fit.

I could only imagine what a M1920 bolt assembly would bring
on EBAY. There is a Savage R&D 1920 in 7X57MM on one of the
auction sites that is missing the bolt, its been there for
a long time.

a 1920 bolt sold on GB not that long ago... can't recall what it went for but it was good money... like b/c of the sight still being on it... I would not be the list bit surprised if the person that bought it just wanted the sight...

Are the 300 Sav and the 250 Sav stocks the same on these 1920s? If so, I'd be interested!

Dam Rod, last Novi show there was a 1920 sav. 300 that needed a stock, had the peep and all, price was right also! but I had bought 2 99s there already! anything else much good there?

There were quite a few 99s, but most were way overpriced ($1000 EG in .300). I took a couple non-Savages down to sell and I found buyers at prices that I thought were fair. It's always a good show.

Can anybody clarify if a stock for a .300 Model 20 will also fit a .250?

Thanks,

Rod

Yes
May have Minor fitting from a 250 to a 300
But Barrel Dia's are within a few thousands.

Thanks for clarifying the barrel dimensions Steve.

I believe the stock and stock hardware are sold. I have the barreled action and trigger group that I'd like to sell as one unit if possible, but I would consider breaking it up if need be.

I swabbed the barrel last night and it looks very good. As I said, the exterior of the barrel isn't pretty, with some pitting and loss of blue from steel wool. The receiver is unmessed with and looks very nice.

I'd sell the whole thing, minus the stock and stock hardware, for $200, shipped to your C&R or FFL. PM me if interested.

Stock and barreled action are both sold pending funds.

I bought the stock here from Rod and he sent it to the resident stock wizard, Karnis, for me. Karnis fixed the crack the best he could, and sent it to me. Arrived today. My barreled .250 action dropped right in. Exact fit. Thanks to all that were involved in this improvement! Check out the pic of the crack in the forend above.

I do have an extra stock that fits a 1920 barreled action. I'll sell it pretty cheap!
