The old Model B came through and I was able to take this deer just the other morning. After the shot the deer ran over the hill and out of sight. I decided it might be best to give it awhile before following up. I was sure of the shot but, well ya never know. So to kill time I made a couple of calls with the open reed. The coyote came to about 100 yards before deciding that's maybe not such a good idea. Too late. Snapped a couple photos and went to retrieve the deer. He'd only gone about 80 yards after being hit through both lungs.
As he lay.

WOW... great deer with a great gun and the coyote is just icing on the cake... very cool Matt!!
Too cool! my old 303 B is one of the best shooting 99s I have ever shot, took a doe with it last year!
I think it would be a lot easier to start a thread for those that DIDNT get a deer this year. Everyone is banging them down. I missed a great mule deer like this a few weeks ago in Montana. Great deer Sir. Gotta respect a guy that defers from the 280 AI with a 4-12 Zeiss club and uses the tools of 1910. Way, way cool.
Matt's postings are downright inspirational!
Great job...gotta love the .303. I use mine frequently, it's my favorite in the woods rifle. Took it on a caribou trip a few years ago, killed a big 'bou with it and my brother used it to kill both of his...after tagging out on caribou I put on the .410 barrel and kept the camp in spruce grouse. If I go in the woods this week (as opposed to hunting the big open areas) the .303 will probably go with me.
Now that is just awesome....great hunt, pics and rifle. Thanks for sharing.
Nice buck with a cool old Savage. Would love to see the caribou from cra1948 too.
Simply awesome!! great story... and wonderful looking deer...
I like the 'just as I found him' style picture... not enough folks do that one..
Super cool!!!!!! Congrats. reflex264
saddlering, I've always been amazed at how accurate these rifles are. No big trick to put 3 shots in "an inch-ana-half atta hunurd" (Montanese pronunciation)
cra1948, caribou with a 303 Savage would be something.
gnoahhh, thanks for the kind words. You, 303Mike and the rest of the guys have played a big part in allowing me to pursue using the old Savage 1899s. In a way, you guys are with me on each hunt. Thanks for passing on the tradition.
Those are great pictures, and that's a great buck! Congrats!
That's impressive; the country you hunt, the respective game you've taken, and the rifle you've chosen to hunt.
NICE! I saved one of your other pics, a Bighorn with a M99...coolest thing ever....
that is way cool congrat's! savage 99's rule!!!
Matt, Please pardon my quest for technicalities but how about sharing some data on the loads you used. Shoot sharp, Mike
That is too cool for school.
Is there anybody here than can turn those pics into black and whites?
Now THAT would be cool.
Retro.
Those 303s are good medicine for mule deer. Here is one taken a few years back with my 1927 vintage 303-G. Not as big a deer or gun as Matt's and no coyote, but a decent deer for our part of the country. This little G shoots 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards just like Matt's B with a Lyman 57 for my old eyes.
Lung shot with Winchester factory 190 gr. Silvertip at 100 yards. Buck traveled about 40 yards before folding up.
Really nice buck, Mattgotta love that 303 cartridge.
Now that is a nice...................gun rack.
Griz, no schlup for sure!!! One to be very proud of... I would be for sure!!
griz, that's a great deer and I bet it was a great hunt.
303Mike, my load uses 170 grain Speer HotCor flat point, 33 grains of IMR 4320, a 9 1/2 primer all in a Norma case. Velocity is 2080 fps. This load is very accurate in both my .303 Savages Models B and C. I'm working with 190 grain cast bullets. But I like the Speers so much it's going to be hard for me to change.
Way too cool!!!! For the first time ever I took one of my Savages, an 1899H in 25-35, on a hunt. Only a whitetail doe, but still had the cool factor. That's a nice muley to take with the old Savage. Congratulations.
Great postings. Nice job on the pictures.
Congratulations. The decision to leave my tack driving 7-08 at home and take a 99 is getting easier and easier.
That's the same conclusion I came to willowcreek. It seems to me that "tack driving" ability in a big game rifle might just be over rated for most hunting situations. It certainly is neat, but far from necessary. I strive for the best accuracy I can, don't get me wrong. But the reality is that even a 3" "atta hunurd" rifle still hits within 1 1/2" either side of the intended target. That's this far ---------------------. If I can hit every deer or elk I shoot at from field positions within a 3" radius at 200 yards or even 6" at 400 yards, I'd be pretty happy (not that I do, 400 yards is a long dam way). Hell, doping the wind correctly where I hunt has more effect on bullet placement than the accuracy of the rifle.

Real nice looking rifle. Good wood condition, just a beauty...
Someone recently made the mistake in another thread concerning the nicest rifle savage ever made (pre-war R), They must have momentarily forgotten about the G.

Yep!
Good job! I am thinking about getting into the .303 Savage.
Great story and great photos. Thanks for posting these.

Great hunt!
Great looking country!!
Even greater gun!!!
