My daughter asked for a rifle for Christmas. I was thinking about giving her my 1950 R in 250. But, it's my absolute favorite rifle. I could give her the R in 300 I just bought from 300jimmy, but it may kick a bit much. So, trying to buy some time, to get something a little more special, I'm going to tell her to get her hunter safety card first, and then we will pick a rifle.

In the mean time, she will be graduating from a 5 year Masters program in May. She will have an MS in Ocupational Therapy and a BS in Health Biology. As a grad present I can justify spending a good bit more than as a X-mas present. I'm leaning toward a pre war 250 in very good shape. Maybe an F. I guess I could try and get her to pick a model she likes. Or, I know where there is an E in 243 I can get cheap and restock it. If I could find some real pretty early wood I could build her a nice rifle that is already D/T, and scope it.

My question is, what do you think I should do? A vintage 250, or a custom 243. I don't think she will really do a lot of hunting, but I could be wrong. I do think she would put in a good bit of range time.

Custom 243.

With an Occupational Therapist as a daughter, consider it a retirement investment. She could afford a good home for you down the road.

Savage 14 in 250 or 243. I got a 114 in 270 for a promotion gift and it has served me well with lots of deer and got my #2 buck to date. Years down the road, it will be easier to get parts if necessary, especially if Dad isnt around.

Down the road when she's teaching her kids to hunt, the 243 ammunition is going to much easier for her to find. On the other hand, a premil 99 in 250 is much cooler. You'll have to decide which is more important from her point of view.

Finding some really nice EG style wood and getting it fitted to that E would be a heck of a present.

A .250 or .300 50's F. The R is pretty heavy. EG if you want open sights or can find a late one that is factory D&T'd.

If you can't find a nice 99 then maybe a Savage bolt in .250. These have the 1 in 10 twist.

I vote for the pre war 250 for the cool/pleaure to shoot factor. With Savage now chambering in 250 will not be a problem to get ammo. Throw in 20 boxes and it will last her forever. For sure a unique gift and not off the shelf. Will also gain in value in the coming years. Your gun would mean the most to her and you would have a enjoyable time seeking another 250R. GW

JMO, I'd go the .243 route, as she may want to pass it on to one of her children someday, the .243 will reach across generations for ammo AND parts.

I'll second that emotion! Snag one that's been d/t'ed (it seems half of them have been), stick a decent scope on it that isn't so big as to encumber the gun's gracefulness, and send her forth into the world.

Thanks for all of the feedback. It's deffinately going to be a 99. If I got her a 1920 that would mean I'd have to start collecting them too. I'm leaning toward a 250. If I go the 243 route, that means I have to do work, unless I farmed it out, and I'm know to be very slow on projects. Thanks again, Joe.
