My huntin pard gave Lilah one of these for Christmas, who knows how to determine the age? Kids got 2 guns already and she's 17 weeks tomorrow.

I have one also...No serial number on it and I don't know how to determine the age. The Model 14 was made between 1906 and 1910. The Model 14 1/2 was made between 1911 and 1941. Those made between 1906 to 1916 will be marked A&T (Arms and Tool). After 1916 they will be marked J. Stevens Arms Co. The ones between 1916 and 1920 were made by New England Westinghouse who produced military arms. From 1921 to 1932 they were made by Savage. The Savage made ones were marked "SVG" on the left above the trigger.

Did a little research of my own on these that comes up with some differences. The 14� is first listed in a revised issue of Stevens Arms catalog No 52 from about 1910 or early 1911 (I cannot accurately date it � it comes before one dated 1911 � but when in 1911, early or late, I have no idea). I consider all to have been made by Stevens, it was the same company & manufacturing facility, just with different ownership. Even when Savage took over it was ran as a separate facility until 1936 � in Kimmel�s book he states �In 1936 Stevens was converted from a Separate entity owned by Savage to a division of Savage Arms�; this is also when some of the older Stevens models got dropped and more Stevens branded versions of Savage designs started to appear.

This is the time period I find when the 14� got dropped, it is last listed in Stevens Catalog No 61 with which I have a Aug 15, 1935 price list that has it at $4.25. This catalog still states that Stevens was �owned and operated by Savage Arms�. The 14� is not in a March 5, 1936 wholesale catalog or any later catalogs that I could find and Stevens is described as a �division of Savage Arms� in these which all agrees with Kimmel.

I do not think the SVG logo was used until the late 1920�s, it does not show up in Stevens catalogs until No 57 circa 1929 and does not show up in Savage catalogs until about 1928 (Savage catalog No 65 from late 1928 and in a Savage parts catalog from 1928 � earlier literature still uses the �Savage Quality� screaming Indian logo. I have also found this to be the case with Stevens Visible Loaders � there were some changes made in 1920 when Savage took over yet very few of the guns with this change that date them 1920 & after have the SVG stamp.


From the catalog description � "The �Little Scout� No. 14� Rifle supersedes the former �Little Scout� Rifle No. 14 and is a vast improvement in every detail".
