Hello, I have a 250/3000 it has a perch belly and cross checked trigger. Last time I was reloading it seemed the IMR 3031 was a little "warm" for the rifle. I was using 31 grains with a 100 grain bullet. Sierra game kings and Nosler partitions. I now have some Nosler 85 grain ballistic tips. I also have some 87 grain speer hot cors. My questions are what is a good powder/load for 100 grain bullets? Are the Nosler 85 grain ballistic tips large game bullets? What is a good powder load for them? And finally what is a good recipe for the 87 grain hot cors? Thanks guys. I have IMR 3031,4895 both imr & hodgdon, h4198 and lever whatever,and some H4350.

I've a 99H in 250 and this rifle seems partial to Reloader powders, 19 for 100 grain bullets and 15 for the 85-87 grainers. 4350 has worked well in other rifles with 100grs. and I don't know why 4895 wouldn't work well w/either bullet weight. Might not give the most velocity but should be more than accurate enough! My 2 cents...

I've had great luck with H4895, though I'm amazed if you got any Nosler bullets to shoot better than 6" groups with an old 99. They are too long to stabilize in a 1 in 14" twist.

You will easily get the best velocity and accuracy with Reloder 15. I use 36.0 grains with the 87 Speers. Don't even think about it anymore - it just works.

Ask 5 people, get 7 different answers. That being said, I am Varget fan. I love the stuff so much I put it on my cornflakes. Get very satisfying velocities and M.O.A. accuracy. I have the 1-14 twist, so I stick with the 87 grain Speer Hot Cores. Mr. C gave that advice many moons ago, and is still current. If you have the pre mil 99s with the slower twist, the Nozler loading manual says in the the beginning of the 250 Savage section that if you have an older model with the slower twist, don't bother with our bullitz. They be tooo long and won't stabilize.

I go along with you on the 4895. It does very well in my rifle behind an 87 grainer.

I've been down awhile, but just got the chance to shoot a group with those old Nosler 100gr. I'll pull up the old thread and post my group with them. 1 in 14" twist.

I'm just a hold out. I shoot 87 grain Hornadys. I have several boxes of 87 hot cores and have yet to load a single one. My load works, so why fix it.

[34-34.5 is a sweet spot for many rifles] Sierra 90 grain bullets shoot well for me.

Angus1895, I believe the 85 grain BT's you mentioned are listed as a varmint category by Nosler. Probably best to stay away from them on big game.

34-35 grains H4895 with 87 grain Speer Hot-Cors are standard fodder for the recent 99s I have owned. Bullet works great on Midwest Whitetails.

Dad had a M99T that he loaded 87 grain pre-Hot-Cor bullets with IMR3031. Don't rember how many grains he used but he trimmed cases every third time. The load was deadly on Wisconsin Whitetails and killed Antelope and Mule deer out west.

Yes, I am blessed with a tube in an ol 250/3000 that will group nosler 100's. But the rifle seems sensitive to 3031 as in stickiness and I also split one case. I will work up the h 4895 tomorrow with fresh cases. I will also work up the Hot cors. Will use the nosler ballistic tips for coyotes. Thanks for all your help. I cannot find Re-loader here in Idaho.

Be interesting to see what the twist came out to if you measure it on that barrel.

only difference here is that I use 37gr for 3071fps. Lays deer low, one to a customer.

Interesting - mine runs right at 3,000 fps in my .250 F.

Thanks deerstalker! Was working up the 160 ftx for the Marlin 308 in the 300 savage with lever whatever powder looks like a winner! We got lot of leverwhatever here in Lemhi county and it is nearly 10% cheaper than the others (makes sense as one uses about 12% more per load)........wonder if anyone has used it in the 250/3000? I really like the powder for the 30/30 and the 303.
