While getting ready for the Fest I finally had a good opportunity to assemble a grouping of guns all sharing a certain feature, one that in some of these models might really surprise most people which made think of making it a puzzler. I then added some more required features to reduce the list.

The guns pictured below are all -

1) ???????? (this is a feature that in some models pictured here is standard without any options, in some it's the most common, in some it's the least common and in some it's down right rare. In some this feature reduces the value and in some it increases the value, sometimes by a large amount.)

2) ???????? (this is a feature of a model - all examples of a model either are, or are not this, independent of feature #1)

3) All are long guns (pistols can also fit in the first two groups)

4) All are of USA manufacture (with the emphasis here on the ones by Savage & Steven's, of course)

There are other Savage 22's that will have feature 1, or 2, but the ones pictured might be the only Savage Model's that can be found with both, there are a couple there that really surprised me when I found them, especially my most recent find.

1) .22 Long Rifle caliber?

2) Rimfire?
Posted By: GeneB Re: 22 puzzler - 09/06/14
1) no on the long rifle

2) I thought rimfire would be assumed from the title, yes they are all rimfire but that is not what I am looking for.

...another clue (which I had prepared to help with answer #1, which I now is not needed, but it might help with #2) - none of the guns pictured below have feature #1, and the 2nd down from the top also does not have feature #2 -

Picture 1 shows a model 1911 2nd from the top, which has feature #2, the hint picture has a model 1904, which does not have feature #2. Also the 1911 is the only gun where #2 would not be totally obvious.

Three of the guns pictured are the only examples in 22 SHORT I have ever came across, or even found reference to. The 1914, the 1923 version of the NRA MATCH RIFLE (I have seen other 22 short in the earlier guns) and the Stevens Gallery 80. The 1914 was totally unexpected.

The .22 short versions of the 19NRA are scarce? I have a beater missing the bolt and mag that I thought would be fun to restore. I have several bolts, but I'm afraid the mags are made of un. Thanks for posting your puzzler - I learned something!

I don't remember seeing a barrel marked Short, CB or Cap before. Interesting.

Gene,

For those of us who could not attend this recent Fest, will you enlighten us on the 2nd feature?

Please?

I've got a pretty good stack of 1911's and am at a loss. Something to do with the magazine?

Thank you,

Doug

2) magazine feed...?
Posted By: steve99 Re: 22 puzzler - 09/20/14
Repeaters.
Posted By: GeneB Re: 22 puzzler - 09/21/14
Yes, repeaters is what I was looking for. The Savage 1911 is one of the few repeaters where it isn't obvious at first glance. All magazine fed guns are repeaters, but not all repeaters are magazine fed - revolvers & multi-barreled guns for instance - there are even some old single barrel muzzle loaders the used multiple charges on top of each other.
