Stopping by today and hope you don't mind a question. The gun is sold so no rules broken but what is it? I was thinking it's a customized private piece as I have never seen another on like it. I have no clue other than it is certainly a looker.

Custom. I'll take it.
Probably a 99G originally, but who knows with all that custom work anything's possible.
I'd say it was originally a 99G, now it's a totally custom rifle. As the guy says, "offered at a fraction of the upgrading cost". Though I'm not sure about that.. $3900 is a lot of scratch for an upgrade.
Is it a G with new furniture?
I like it , it looks like some high quality work.
but not something I'd lay the cash out for.
3900 will buy a nice original gun

"The bore is great conditon and the rust bluing is perfect."

Rust! Did you see rust?

Blueing is a form of controlled rust.

The rifle shows quality workmanship but it's hard to recoup the original cost. I'm for an original gun. Mark {Villingus Sp?] was known to collect custom 99 from G&H and the like. He brought some fine examples to the first Savagefest. Each to their own. smile
"Rust Blueing" is not the topic!

I see Rust and corrosion on the 99's metal

eek
I guess it's nice enough work; it doesn't appeal to me. I see it sold. I'm with Bert - give me an original rifle and it's just fine if it's not engraved.

The age of the rifle is going on 85 years. I don't know about bout you but after 55 years I show deterioration, corrosion but no outward signs of rust. I just don't get that excited 'bout rust anymore than mould or dust.

My basic point is that blued metal is susceptible to rust. Get over it. The buyer certainly did! wink
Hey Paul, I'll sell you any nice original gun in my bunch for $3900, you choose! grin

All you guys with the heated hunting shacks, you'd have nothing but time to roll it around in your sweaty paws and admire it. What else are you gunna do?

LOPE YER MULE! LOL
hey Roy. you got one worth 3900 ?? is it a leader ? monarch?
maybe in 32-40 ? something like that smile

Come on man, I'm a 99 shooter, not in antiquities acquisition and preservation. No dust in my safe... grin

Hey Paul

Just for your edification, it's Bert, not Paul. wink smile
$3,900 is not bad for current prices for CUSTOM work. Not your local smith that does decent work but true custom guys with 2-3 year backlogs. The prices they command are not for the average Joe. That stick of wood probably cost $600 and the stocking job would be an extra $2,850 before other custom flourishes from places like the one below. The engraving would be extra from someplace else.

Dan Rossiter has all the work he can handle. Even at those prices.

There are people out there that will look at that 99 a see it as a no wait bargain. If the work was done by a shop like Doug Turnbull's, the value will be there down the road if you want to sell it. This one seemed to sell quick.

Paul got it, and I suspect Bert caught it to. smile
The $3,900 price had to be the dealers asking price.

The wood is spectacular.

The rust might clean off with fine steel wool and oil.

That's alright Bert, I rough it here too. Most days I hunt w/o any sunscreen whatsoever. laugh
Squint as I might, these apparently ancient eyes of mine can't make out the rust you guys are talking about.

Extrapolating from this, maybe I have a safe full of rusted rifles and don't know it eek

I don't see rust either. Just the affects of a bright camera flash me-thinks.
