It seems impossible to find an ejector spring for my early 340 in 30-30 cal. Any one know where one can be purchased and if other model savage/stevens use the same one? Also were any of them ever factory hand checkered? The one that was handed down to my son was owned by hid great grandfather. Its is a real accurate shooter and is nicely hand checkered, most likely from the 1950's.

Can't help you with the part, but a 1957 ad for Savage 340 states,

"Model 340-S De Luxe is the same as Model 340 above except fitted with the following special equipment: Savage No. 175 Micro Peep Sight, disc elevator rear sight, Hooded Ramp Front Sight, fine checkering on grip and forearm, fitted with sling screw eyes for carrying strap."

Does your rifle have any of these other features?

Also, I have a 1955 catalog which has a similar description as above but does not mention the disc elevator for the rear sight, and the pictures in the catalog seem to have the same rear sight on the standard and deluxe models, so maybe the disc elevator came after 1955.

I would try either

www.gunpartscorp.com

or

www.jackfirstgun.com

Jack First sometimes makes special runs of hard to find parts that are in demand.

Jaaack I have not been able to find an "s" designation, it has the checkering in both places. Diamond shape in center of forearm checkering. and a wooden 3/16" dowel in the pistol grip running through it right to left in the "V" of the checkering. Although the rear sight is a fold down there is bluing wear in a circular pattern approx. 2" behind the fold down one. The only writing on the magazine is on the rear edge "PAT.APPL.FOR." the finish looks to be undisturbed. Thanks to everyone who replied.

The Savage 342-S is the only 340 series rifle that I've seen with walnut and cut checkering.

After finding a pic of a 340s Deluxe, Im sure mine is just a nice after market checkering job done sometime early. thanks for the input. I am still interested in finding an ejector spring early style.
