Does anybody have a picture or know the correct type of rear barrel sight for model 1920 ?

Thanks in advance

According to Nick Stroebel's Old Gunsights, it's a Savage No. 20 S.R. Flat Top Rear Sight which is the same sight that was used on many (most?) of the Model 99s during the early 20's.

There were several variations of the No 20 sight made over the years, even variation in the same years .

This is the only version of the No 20 that I have ever seen on a 1920 and all have had the elevator with the fine adjustment screw, the gun pictured is an early one. This sight came in a few different heights for different applications, you will need the tallest of the versions I have seen, I think all the 99's & 22's all took shorter versions, the shortest are on 1922 and 23-A Sporters where the barrel is integral with the receiver.

I think the one on the left is for a 1920 -

GeneB, Hello. In the above post,4th picture down,4th sight, starting at the left.I'm looking at an 1899 Savage, made in 1913 Saddle Ring Carbine. It has this very backsight on it.Is this the correct sight?

Hi Malcolm, I see your a new member, once you/ve been around awhile you will realize questions about 1899's should be directed to someone else! ....but I do know a little about the sights, I THINK that your gun would originally had a No. 21 Micrometer rear sight, the sight you pointed out is also a No. 21, but was introduced in the late 1930's (I think the second from the left is also a No 21).

I think it's still called the No. 21 because it would be a direct replacement for any other sight called a No. 21, at some point (mid 1930's or later) your gun may have needed a new rear sight, if a No 21 was ordered then the sight you pointed out is what would have been sent. Savage often used the same Number for very different looking sights, but from what I have seen they always are direct replacements for any earlier ones with the same No. (if it were ordered with the correct height).

It would also have been better to start a new thread instead of asking a question about an 1899 in a thread about a 1920, more who could answer would have looked.

Just another observation is that the 21B and 21S are usually broken in some way if you find them on the auction sights. I don't think they were very durable, mostly the elevation adjustments on the 21B's are snapped off a lot. I have a few here, the good ones are on the guns but I have a few 21S's and a couple 21B's sitting here for spares as well/ You find them more often broken than you do working.

Thanx for the comeback geneB,I appreciate your answer and found it very interesting and informative.
I may start just such a thread, but your answer is definitely something I would not have thought of.All the original SRC's up for sale have the more complex micrometer sight and,as you said that 1930's backsight must have gone on some time later.Incidently, the front sight is also a copper round base later savage replacement.

Hello Agian geneB,Rick99,told me to get a Savage marked flat top sporter rear sight for a 1920 made 28 inch barrel crescent butt, straight grip 1899 Model A .303 Savage, which I did.In your above post of pictures (#10813316),The sight I got was the 3rd one from the left,and/or the 5th one from the left,(which I believe to be the same sight). it came with the correct screw adjustable elevator.Would you say this was the right sight I need or should it have a higher blade like the 7th and 8th from the left. Thanx in advance. Malcolm.
PS. Rick didn't say how high the blade should be.
