Hello. Am planning on hosting this event September 9 thru the 11th. That way both sides of the Lehi valley is open 4 rifle Cow elk over the counter tag. I cannot predict how many will be on the valley floor as it depends on weather and pressure. I have yet to approach the guide for his rates as perhaps a package discount is available? Archery will also be a over the counter deal and I could help out there. I my self will be bowhunting. There is an nice open to the public free rifle range at 300 yards. Several nice hot springs and river rafting steel head fishing. I have been advised to try to get the elks lodge for the show and hope to contact them tommorow. P.M. me for questions. Remember these are over the counter tags. You can buy the tag once you find elk so no pressure.

The Savage Hunting Fest - West. Sounds like a plan! smile

Those that "will" or "might" please sign in. State the probability of your attending. Also, will you be displaying, attend but no display and/or hunting.

Question: will there be display days then hunting or are you intending to try and do both at the same time?

Will there be a secure location that multiple firearm ($$$) can be left while hunting?
Posted By: Angus1895 Re: Savage fest west - 02/18/16
I won't be hunting on the week end. I will assist others scouting or what not. I have yet to check the elks lodge for security. I have access to store stuff securely at my house and cabin. In the town of salmon I have not planned it out. We'll keep you updated.

I have it on my calendar!
It may take a while for folks to commit so may want to set a deadline to have a minimum of positive responses to make it really official. And of course any later folks would be welcome. Or go for it regardless of numbers?
Just my 2 cents...
Hope it works out! And I will have sorted out my hunting options by then. Killing elk with 99 would be great. And I bow hunted elk in Idaho about 10 years ago so that would be good too.

I looked at the elks lodge. It looks great got pictures but no phot bucket here. I could email them to some one. The room locks. There is a bar next door. They have 6 r.v. hook ups on the property. The fee for the room is $150 a day. Do we want Fri sat sun. Or what do we want? The r.v. spots are $25 a day. Thanks John.

Here is a fest west update. The Town of Salmon is Very Excited about this festival. It will be legal to trade and sell firearms and we can have a shooting match at the free public rifle range. I plan on some good food and some natural hot spring visits. My question is we better plan on it being open 2 the public 4 a few hours a day. There is camping on site and the bar will be open on Friday. They will also open on Saturday if we want it. I also would like to invite other Lever action collectors? What say U? Thanks John

thinking on this ^^^^^^^^^^^maybe a lot of Savages would come out of the woodwork both 2 legged and wood and metal grin whistle

my question if i can make it , coming thru Sweet Grass down hwy 15, looks like there are 3 options
1]down 15 to Sun Prairie 89 to Sun River take 200 thru Lincoln + Greenough to Missoula

2} keep on 15 thru Wolf Crick pass to Helena take 12 to Garrison back to Missoula

3}stay on 15 to Butte and hit 1 at Anaconda + 38 to Grantsdale then to Salmon

i realise that # 1 +3 are mountainous and i would be towing a 32' 5th wheel
AM i crazy or ??????????????????????

The fest is in Salmon, Idaho from September 9 to 11?

If I was in Helena and going to Salmon, I'd take 15 south to 43, over to 93, then south to Salmon.

Savage fest west Sept 9 thru 11.

Finally got done off the road. Who coming to the fest west likes catfish? Trying to see if how many I should keep. Any recommendations on a turkey shoot? I was thinking scoped and none scoped. Should we all have it off a bench or not? Should we have caliber classes? Is LBK coming? If so I better get some basketballs 4 targets? I was also thinking about morning evening scouting / glassing sessions 4 elk. If anyone wants to stay at my cabin in Leader please let me know. It is 45 miles from salmon. Thanks John
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: Savage fest west - 04/19/16
John, too early to say if I'll bring the trailer or not. The Toyota is far easier than the big truck towing that far.

As for the shoot, I'm up for all of it.

Another option which would avoid the worst of the mountains would be to stay on I-15 to Dillon and 20 mi. S take Clark Canyon exit to Hwy 324. Stay on that hwy. straight into Leadore ID. More or less 60 mi. from the dam. You'll go right past our house in Grant MT. Hope that I am able to see the show!!
Posted By: Angus1895 Re: Savage fest west - 05/06/16
That mountain pass is called grizzly. It is fun 2 hunt there. The elks lodge where the fest is at has its own bar. So that must be the official one in Salmon.

I am still in Minnesota working. We R gonna float 550 head in 60 days. When I get home I am gonna try to get a hotel to sponsor us. There is an RV park on site and the place has its own bar. I can't wait to get started, get organized and get the hell back to idaho!

Need a head count and input please. The hall costs $450 for the three days. Do we want this invite only or can I arrange an open to public limited hour period and sell admission? I can have an list of activities also. I have a chronograph we could set up on the range. Have a fun shoot. Mule ride. Elk scouting, hunting, bow hunting deer, hot spring, river rafting, how to build your own black rifle seminar. Perhaps Fireball could lecturing " is cerakote for you?" With a wet lab? We could perhaps get Steelhead to lecture " The 130 grain 308 bullet and why I love her".

I am sorry 4 your loss. Come on down, you can shoot aby of mine you want!
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: Savage fest west - 07/16/16
There's a gun dealer in Colorado that I know of that is interested in attending and bringing some antique Colts and Winchester lever guns, but he's not sure if that's on the menu. He's also not sure if public will be attending giving him opportunity to sell. I gave him ol' Angus's name and number, try not to be too hard on him. grin

It seems like if the public is going through, we're all going to be stuck at our tables during that time hitting the booger pickers on the knuckles when they reach for the Savages.

I don't have anything worth showing a bunch of advanced collectors just shooters I hunt with, but I can bring some iron just to fit in a little.

I plan on a public showing to be limited, and controlled. I will even have security and insurance. Steel head will you need ice for your table?
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: Savage fest west - 07/17/16
I'm inclined to think we should let the public in. But then I go to gun shows where I have to keep the booger pickers off my collection so it's nothing new to me. My wife and I will be there plus 2 or possibly 3 guests. I'll have 3 1899's for sale plus the books and hats. David

I could also close savage fest west on saturday at say noon. Then Satevening and Sunday open Lever fest west. Two separate events.

Savage fest west will be closed to the public and will not be advertised locally. Lever fest west will be advertised locally as long as I can get an insurance and LLC set up and it is OK with the town. That will have public admittance. It will be from Saturday Sept 10 1 to 6 pm. Then Sunday Noon until 4 pm. Savage fest will start Friday Morning I will see when doors will open.

I was thinking friday, or Saturday morning. I am gonna have by caliber, open or scoped divisions. All vintage lever guns apply. A special savage section will be considered. I will get the RV cost. I do not plan on paying for the room all myself but I do not know what to charge for the savage fest. Perhaps a donation once we figure who is all there. The Lever fest portion would be free to all savage fest participants. Table fees and admission to be announced once I know the town and my wife are OK with it. Please any input would be great.

David, what 1899's will you be letting go of. That's the week of my big NC Off Shore Fishing Tournament. My wife wants to see some of the West. I could fish 4 days then fly out. I'd have to start talking to her now. She's a planner. I'd fly out on the drop of a dime. She has to think and organize. How close is the nearest airport? I'll ask her, we haven't done a family vacation for a couple years. Geez, I'm always the last one to the dance, Joe.

Due to insurance/liability this will not be publicly advertised. Invite only, low key, I will just have attendees sign waivers before admission. If it goes well I will worry about promoting it to larger for the coming years. Hopefully some people come. I cannot believe how nice a hall, camping site, and bar restaurant the facility has! The Manager Karen is super nice also.

Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Savage fest west - 08/06/16
Thanks David, You can hold off. I just bought 3 guns and have two more to look at. Yours probably have better condition. One is an old 30-30 hunter that my friend said is not in too good of condition and his dad would let it go cheap. I've got to see what cheap is. Thanks, Joe.
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: Savage fest west - 08/07/16
The guns I'm selling are an 1899 250-3000 that is mostly gray but shot really tight groups at 25 yds. An 1899A 30-30 that is well worn but not molested and a well above average SR in 303. All were produced between 1911 and 1917. I haven't shot the 30-30 and the SR. The 250-3K and the SR are rifles that were in my display until replaced by higher condition rifles. The checkered trigger of the 250-3K appears on page 51 of my book.
You've done good with your latest acquisitions. I've had to put buying any more rifles on hold for now and that's why these 3 are for sale. David
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: Savage fest west - 08/09/16
I have regretfully decided not to attend fest west that my very good friend John Angus1895 is so graciously hosting next month in Salmon, Idaho. I had the truck and travel trailer both repaired for the trip, new batteries installed, guns lined up, tinkerbells on.

John has gone to a lot of work and spent some hard earned cash preparing for fest, so I know I'm letting him down by not attending, and I'm sorry to feel the need to back out. It's not a money or a work issue, and it has nothing to do with John or his handling of the event, far from it. I know if John's doing it, it'll be done right and all in attendance will be blessed. The Savages displayed should be quite a sight!

I really encourage any still on the fence to consider going and take your Savages. It should be a really great time and weather should be about perfect.

Gentlemen, I hate to do this, but I think I'm going to bow out. My uncle who's 75'ish called Monday morning asking if I wanted to go on a 3 day or so fishing trip with him. His wife won't let him take his boat out alone since his balance isn't very good. Since every weekend for me is already booked until late October, I found myself choosing between 40 hours of driving and 6 days on the road to meet with 3 or 4 campfire members versus spending time with the man that taught me most of what I know about fishing (and could still teach me much more).

I really, really hate to drop at the last moment since I said I'd be there. I've been at every one except the very first one at Jed's.

I'm sorry.

I cancelled all the fliers and local stuff to protect the members from the cookies hooked public. So I am not sure if you coming up here would pencil. If you are coming let's go hunting. Got 40 head of elk behind the house last night! The radio station is KSRA in Salmon Idaho.

John, I'm off to the doctor in Jackson in a few minutes but would like to know if there are any decent bulls in the herd. PM me your phone number and I'll call this evening. Ulvejaeger, PM me your phone number and we'll discuss getting a book to you. I will be at the UGCA collectors gun show in Ogden October 8 and 9 or can mail one to you. David

Nope no bull tags available. Only cow rifle, we got two today. Bulls are draw and or archery.

John, I'm going to bow out completely. I have two Wy cow tags and it has actually come down to some other complicating factors that it is better I don't come. Would have really enjoyed coming if things had worked out differently. Hopefully next year will work. Thanks for all the effort you put into this. David

Bud, I am VERY VERY sorry for this. I feel terrible for not making it. If I had we'd be going elk hunting!
