Taking some time off work so drove over to a nearby little town that has a gun shop I had not been in before Lo and behold on the used rack amongst the usual pump shotguns and .22 rifles sits a nice 99R with an old Weaver K4 on it. Asking rice of $800. It's not mint, but is in very presentable condition.

Too high and if so, by how much? Couldn't find many 99Rs on Gunbroker for comparison purposes.

pre war or post war. 1930's vintage or 1950's?

$800. would be the high end for a 50's 99 R. Low end would be ruled by the negative condition. GW

How to tell Pre-war or post? It's drilled and tapped, hard to tell if factory or not with the scope base on it.

One way of course would be the serial number. But a visual would be on a pre-war R there would be two parallel lines around the forend.

This is a post war R in 250-3000 Sav. Heavy forend that tapers back to the receiver and the buttstock is also heavier.

If after market D/T the Savage logo will be under the mount where you can't see it. If factory D/T they moved the Savage Logo to the side where you can still see it. A member here sold me a nice 50's vintage R in 300 for $450. Had the wrong sling studs on it. Otherwise a very nice rifle. If it's post war it would have to be squeaky clean. A quick look at the forearm will tell if pre or post war. The pre war R's had a thin double line around the tip of the forearm, Joe.

LBK beat me to it, with pictures, Joe.

high, imo. unless it has hangtags on it. grin

They turn up on GB for between 5 and 6 hundred dollars for nice examples. Be patient. Be ready to buy. A post war R in 300 Savage is not a rare breed. A good rifle but common.

This one is definitely a post war one. I have an R in .250, didn't pay $800 for it, can't remember exactly what I did at the moment, but it seems it was about $600. Might make an offer if it sits a while.

Don't forget it has a $200 Stith Mount, 1940 is pre war and CC on lever is prime.

Also had a minty R in 250. I was underwhelemed. BBL too short, as heavy as a 300 with less performance, a nice collector gun but ho-hum.

Brought a grand at Rock Island.

Nope, not an RS, prewar R with studs. Probably a great hunter.

Don't claim to be a 99 expert but

Is forend faked ?
Possible OEM sling bases replaced ?
No tang site because Stith mount ?

Curious how one can say it's 100% an R as it's useful to know.

Thanks.

Then it definitely isn't worth $800. I would say $600 tops. $500 is right in line for average. $400 is a really good deal. Anything south of $400 is a great deal.

Larry,

You CLAIM to be many things, but an honest man wouldn't have to change his 24HCF handle all the time, or would he? Oldman1942, etc

I think that jwgibson's post has got you pegged. While you can run from a review like that, you can't hide.
