I just won one in an auction, 250 Savage. Will they stabilize 100 gr bullets or just the 87 gr ones?

1-14" twist will need shorter bullets. 87gr speer hot cores are the go to bullets for the older savage 250 rifles. There might be some 100gr bullets short enough to stabilize but I've never tried any.

If you can find some 100gr. Speer Hot-Cores they will work, or they do in my H model 99.

I've got a older 99 that needs the 87 gr. Thats what I figured for the 1920 too. The 1920 has a peep and the regular open sight. Doesn't the rear sight need to be removed to use the peep? I havn't got the gun yet so I can't really look at it.

I have a 1950 R in 250 with the 1/10 twist. We were up on the farm a month or so back. From the bench, at 50 yards, with 100 gr Remingtons, it will shoot clover leaves. After the first shot my spotter said "clean miss", "not on paper". I said look again, I can see daylight coming through the paper. He said where, I can't see it. I said where the two lines cross in the bulls eye. It punched the bull out of the target. I've never tried the 87's because it shoots the 100's so well. I have 3 boxes of 87's for when the Remington 100's dry up, Joe.

Since Savage didn't change the ROT from 1-14" to 1-10" until after they changed the action from lever to tang safety circa 1960, I seriously doubt that any 99R has a 1-10" ROT.

Nope, not a replacement barrel. I've been having problems with my computer posting. I saw the mistake and posted an "OOPS" I made a mistake, it's a 1-14 twist. Then I didn't double check to make sure it posted. It didn't. So my 1950 R is a 1-14 that absolutely loves the Remington 100 gr Core Lokts. I always said try the 100's since they are available, my gun loves them. Now, they are expensive and Remington doesn't sell the Core Lokts as loading components anymore. I have three boxes of 87 gr, but I'm waiting till the 100's run out, or I get another 250 and have one gun for each weight so I don't have to mess with re zeroing, Joe

A 1-10" ROT 24" barrel of a style not cataloged after the switch from 1-14" to 1-10" ROT was made? Not likely.

Guy's I made an "OOPS". It was my fault. It's a standard 1-14. I've been watching a post mill thumb safety and had 1-10 on the brain. Sorry for the confusion, Joe.

The 1-14" was the targeted twist rate, the actual twist could and did vary. Some rifles will be faster than 1-14", and I'm sure some will be slower.

Most of the factory 100gr 250 Savage ammunition was made with shorter bullets, and so at least for me they've all worked acceptably for normal hunting distances. But I can't think of a single 250-3000 that I've had that didn't shoot better with the 87gr Speer Hot Core. I'm sure there was at least one..

I think that 99R of yours though might be one that does better with 100gr.

Besides, how ya gonna achieve that magical 3000fps with a 100 grain bullet in a 99 anyway? Sheesh! I can throw a rock faster than a 100 grain factory load out of a 99R. Now an 87 grain bullet- it goes so fast you can't even see it in flight. How's that for speed?

Well Gary, when you put it that way, I could out run the 250 gr bullet in my 35 Winchester. But, I shot a doe in the forehead with it, and it knocked her head out her butt. Turned her clean inside out. All I had to do was bone the meat. That's about the only Winchester that I sold that I miss, Joe.
