I would be willing to ramrod a postal match if enough guys want to take part. I'm thinking some time in September maybe, to give contestants enough time to dust the cobwebs off of their guns?

I'm proposing it'll be for 50 yards, .22 rimfire. Three classes: 1. Any gun, any sights, off the bench- for group. 2. any gun, any sights, no bench- for score. 3. Non-bolt gun repeater (slide action, autoloader), iron sights, 25 yards offhand - for score.

I'll round up some sample targets and post them for consideration/debate. I won't propose any targets that rival aspirins in size. This is for fun.

Simple course of fire: 5 targets, 5 shots per target, best score/group of the five to be the representative score for that individual. No re-entry, but one may participate in all 3 categories.

Cost: Basically nothing- just cost of targets and mailing them back and forth. A buck or two, or a cold beer- I'm easy to please! You're on your own hook for whatever .22 ammo you wish to use.

Prizes: Are you kidding?! grin Forum bragging rights that will stand for all time should be enough! (Perhaps we can get Savage to kick in some tchotchkies like ball caps or something? Anybody know anybody there whom you could ask?)

Notes:

A) Should we put an age limit on the guns? Or perhaps another category for "modern" Savage rimfires in order to keep an even playing field for the old guns?
B) How best to keep this from becoming an "arms race"? Ie: some guys putting heavy Krieger match barrels on their M1903's in order to blindside us, for example.
C) Posting of pics of all targets fired, or just the winners? (Could get pretty cumbersome if we post pics of all targets.) Guess it depends on the turnout.)
D) Specific time period during which one must shoot his targets and return to me.
E) I'll be happy to be the judge. I have a sharp eye and micrometers.

Let's bat this around for a couple of weeks, until say August 26. At that time I'll codify the rules and take steps to initiate it.

Sounds like fun!!! grin cool
No Savage 22. I guess I'll have to think about #1.

Count me in!!...but, uh..."mailing targets back and forth"?..., not with stamps, right?

(PS, I'm counting my Savage-Anschutz as a qualifying Savage 22), my handicap is I only have one non-bolt savage 22, with a ruff chamber)

(PPS, unless you really mean "any" gun, then I'm using my BSA MkIII for every event, it has a lever not a bolt)
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
No, no! I assumed everybody knew this was a Savage contest!! My bad if I didn't mention that- and I guess I didn't. frown

We'll have to get some discussion re: what constitutes a "modern" savage. Perhaps a 4th category for late issue Savage bolt guns/target guns.

If it were "any" gun, I would unlimber a Model 52 and scorch your ears, ha ha!

I was just looking at a Lyman Junior Targetspot, and it came off a pre 64, 52. I thought it would look good on the 19, Joe.

Does Savage/Anschutz qualify?

That it would.

Looks like we will need a 4th category. It wouldn't be fair to the guys shooting 19's and 23's to have to compete against Anschutz's, IMO. Unless the membership thinks otherwise? What say y'all? I want to keep this as democratic as possible.
Posted By: saddlering Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
The only savage 22 I have would be the 22HP does one of these count? and would a stith & scope count also?
Posted By: GeneB Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
How about Steven's from after Savage purchased the company and house branded versions? Steven's 416's & the very similar Ranger's are ones that comes to mind. ...and I say yes to 1899's in 22 HP as long as you use Marble's adapters & 22 Long Rifle ammunition (with the undersized bullets they should be easy to beat).
Posted By: backtobethel Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
When you say "any sight", you mean scopes too?
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
That's OK Gary, when I get my bean shooter tuned up, I'll give those Anschutz guys two x rings, don't want to hurt their feelings, Joe.
Posted By: JeffG Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
^^++1 what GeneB asked about Stevens 416!
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
Aye, any sight means scopes too. I don't have a problem with 416's, Rangers, etc.- fine guns. As long as it falls under the corporate umbrella of Savage...

As for .22HP's, I'm inclined to say ok- as long as they fire cast bullets at .22 rimfire velocities. What says the peanut gallery?

I view this as a group effort, based on the positive responses on the thread a week or two ago. I see my role merely as moderator and facilitator. What I stated earlier was my viewpoint. That said, as self designated moderator shocked smile I will codify all the input in two weeks and carve the rules in stone. We gotta start somewhere.

I really don't want to see this develop into anything but a fun informal event - a means to further the fellowship of our fine group.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
What I'm waiting to see is someone putting a scope on a 101 and outshooting everybody!
Posted By: steve99 Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
Sounds like fun! Count me in. A 1914 pump at 25 yards hmmmmm.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
I'd say since we're a Savage collector's group, that one of the categories should limited to pre-1960 Savage/Stevens/house brand 22's. Could even do 2, one with any sights/scopes and another open to only period sights. At least one other category open to any and all Savage involved guns, including things like the Savage Anschutz or modern bull barrel 17's.
Posted By: KeithNyst Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
Gary, Rimfire Central has some .22 targets in PDFs format.
Posted By: RAS Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
I have a pre-war checkered Savage 29A pump that I would be willing to try this out on.

Gun was my late grandfather's squirrel tool.
Posted By: JeffG Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
so if 416's are in, then Ranger M75 pumps qualify too?
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
Yep.
Posted By: colodog Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
This sounds like fun!

I don't have any classics but my newer Savage hasn't been out in a while so it'll have to do.
Posted By: S99VG Re: Postal match - 08/11/16
How about breaking rifles down into groups related to period of construction. Such as pre and post WWII? I'm sure those periods could be broken down into smaller groups too if needed This would keep the 19 and 23 guys from competing against the Anschutz 22s of the 60s and 70s. Right now I'm Jonesing for a nice older Savage 6A.
Posted By: JeffG Re: Postal match - 08/12/16
How about collecting the finest samples of rifles in each category, then send them from member to member to shoot their best target...I'll go last. laugh
Posted By: S99VG Re: Postal match - 08/12/16
Uh, somehow I think they would never get back home. Though that is a damn good idea!
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Postal match - 08/12/16
What's your address, you can start with mine. I'll get Bob's Dad to wrap it up for me. It'll be the box with holes in it, Joe.

Which means you can be bribed? What is your favorite refreshment these days????? grin grin grin
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Postal match - 08/12/16
Gary just left my house, and I DID NOT give him anything. Actually, I did give him something. But he paid for it! Honest he did! He gave me some 22 ammo to try in my model 19, but bribes don't work backwards, do they? Bribes, Sailor Jerry? I do have to meet up with him to give his book back, Sailor Jerry? I'll have to think about this, Joe.
Posted By: S99VG Re: Postal match - 08/12/16
Did you get your sight fixed?
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Postal match - 08/12/16
No, not yet. I have two brands in the fire. Thinking about another aperture, a bit nicer than the one on it. Then I saw a nice Lyman Junior Targetspot 8X that I thought would look at home on it. I'm just trying to figure out how long I can go with out eating, so I can buy either one. Do you have anything interesting rolling around in the parts bin? Before I give my money to some stranger, Joe.

Well darn , I don't presently own a Savage 22 from any era.

I got a vintage Mossberg around here somewhere though...

Would that be taking unfair advantage ?

That was a mighty nice 19 you showed me. It deserves a better sighting arrangement. Trade ya a scope for that cute little dog ya got! smile

Mike, you show up with her-- you win.
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Postal match - 08/12/16
Gary, Carolyn would give you the dog in a heart beat, she likes to pee on the floor. She will come and sit in front of you, and if you don't let her out NOW, yellow stains on the new carpet. I left her in long enough to go get two steaks for dinner, maybe a half hour, guess what. Plus, she's older than you and me put together. Sometimes I pick her up to put her in bed and I think she's gone stiff.

Yeah, all the scopes I like cost about 3 times what I paid for the gun. But, I've paid even more for scopes for other rifles, so I guess it's all perspective. I'd like to find a period Malcolm, then it would go with the "H", Joe.

I was wondering where he found that picture of my high school girl friend. She still looks nice, put on a little weight. You know she's only 5'3", her name is Rasabelle Magee.

Mike ,
I'm in the same boat as you. No Savage 22. Got a couple ol' Winchesters somewhere.

What you call "vintage Mossberg" we call huba huba!

Okay. Times up. Speak now or forever hold your peace (piece?). On Monday the "official" rules come out, and we'll get this show on the road.

Run down to the bank take out a loan and buy some premo .22 ammo, and get your eyes sharpened up. Let's see what these old Savages (guns, and shooters thereof) are capable of!
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Postal match - 08/25/16
I'm ready, I just have to hold a little low and to the right at 25, not so much at 50, Joe.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Postal match - 08/25/16
Yeah, but can you do it blindfolded and standing on your head? I forgot to mention that before...
Posted By: docost99 Re: Postal match - 08/25/16
29B with a J2.5 and my trusty ol 4C bolt open sights. Ready!

Well, I'm not sure, never tried. But, I can do it over my shoulder, looking at a mirror, through 6 Straubs beer bottles end to end. But it only works up to ten minutes after I finish the last bottle, Joe.
Posted By: JeffG Re: Postal match - 08/25/16
I'm shooting everything I have in each category, then sending the best targets...That come-hither girl? that's a mossberg she's leaning so gently on isn't it? She's out of the race.
