I picked up another 99 # 329191 in 300 Savage. It has 24 inch barrel with raised ramp front sight. Crescent butt plate made me assume it was a 99A which are quite scarce in Ontario. The gun looked and felt right as it is in vg condition with perfect bore.
Taking off butt plate I was very surprised to see 300091 on both stock and butt plate.
The fore stock is numbered 329191 and frame is marked "E".
Questions I have are if late 99A rifles were marked differently on the receiver or if E receivers were used as few 99As appear to have been manufactured. Both serial numbers ending in "91" is also an unusual coincidence.
Gun may be moving on!

I'm still looking for one so can't help with your questions. But, I am very interested in future replies.

PS...checked my B from that period and the receiver face is stamped "B".

The stock question is interesting. The 300xxx serial would be from the very early raised ramp 99-A production period so not like it was a leftover. How well does the wood mate to the metal? Does it look replaced or original? Once the shift to the 24" raised ramp brl. the difference between a 99-A and a 99-E in .300 was just a different butt stock.

Does your rifle have a TD marked brl? Many did.

It sounds like an "E" with an "A' buttstock and buttplate. After about 1926 they both had the same medium weight barrel. The barrel was 24" in all 3 calibers of the A. The E barrels were 24" in 300 and 22" in the other calibers.

The wood looks like a match to metal and in similar condition to the forearm. Gun was found in an estate and not from a collector/dealer who may have had access to a variety of parts. Will try to get pictures to Rick when I have a chance.

Barrel is a TD barrel with style 7 barrel address. Frame is marked Savage Model 99. Wood has original varnish finish.

FWIW #3258XX is a 99A in .30-30 with a 24" raised ramp barrel. Barrel has style 7 address and is a takedown barrel. Front of frame is stamped "A".

Bill, is it a solid frame gun with a TD barrel? There are a few of those around. If the rifle is a TD it's either a 99B or 99F.

I think it is rarer to find an brl on a late A or E that is not marked as a TD.

The gun is a solid frame as per Murray page 3-50 wood fits and matches so well that I would have bet my soul that it is an original buttstock. Maybe a factory letter is in order.

My 99A, serial #3209xx (1929), 30-30, front of receiver marked "A", 24" medium weight, integral front sight takedown barrel. Of interest, the only TD in 30-30 marketed at this time with a 24" barrel was the 99B. The other TD's F, G, and K in 30-30 were cataloged as having 22" barrels. With Savage never say never. David

My 99E, serial #3301xx (1930), 250-3000, front of receiver marked "E" 22" medium weight, integral front sight TD barrel. Loggah showed me one of these which I believe I photographed when I was at his house doing research for the book. I decided to save it for the next book where I plan to cover Savage anomalies. I'm thinking it's not such an anomaly after all. David

David,

This discussion of takedown barrels on solid frame rifles and anomalies got me wondering about my checkered EG in .303 with a 24" barrel, #399,XXX. So, I just pulled the forearm, and indeed it has a takedown barrel. (Front of frame is marked EG and all numbers match.)

I know several other forum members have similar rifles. It would be interesting to know if they all have takedown barrels.

Something else for you to investigate for your next book.

I've got an early 1930's 99R in 300 with a takedown barrel, but pretty sure my EG's in 303 and 30-30 aren't.

Hit and miss as far as I've seen.

Rory, how about unscrewing that barrel and see if it will go into a takedown receiver. grin

I gave it a twist when I found it.

It wasn't budging. grin

I'll have to check my R and RS. They were both produced in 1940. David

Savage must have made a slew of extra TD barrels. I wonder if they thought TD's would be popular forever, or if a big mistake was made on a work order? "To the barrel department: produce 5000 .30 caliber TD barrels." 6 months later: "Geez, boss I thought you said 50,000. Now you tell me."
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: 99 A 300 Savage ????? - 08/25/16
I was wondering pretty much the same thing. Judging by the number of 1920-30's TD's available now they must have been popular but still maybe not as popular Savage anticipated. I've often wondered why they didn't continue the TD after WWII. Not enough demand or Federal laws? David
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: 99 A 300 Savage ????? - 08/25/16
What Federal law? The thing that killed the TD was the shift by sportsmen from using public transportation to get to the range or the deer woods to the universal availability of the automobile. Guys no longer had to break their guns down into small packages to fight their way through crowded terminals, or cramped trains and buses.

My EG 303 399xxx has a 24" takedown bbl.I once owned a pre-war 3pt checkered R with a 22" takedown bbl.My 300 Sav unchecked EG 370xxx does not.
