Just common are 30-30s among pre war guns? Are they most common in 99H?
Posted By: MikeL2 Re: How common are 30-30s 99s? - 12/05/16
I have a 1923 vintage 99F in 30/30.
I look over every one in 30-30 very closely to see if there's a peach there. Most have been run hard. I won't say they're rare, but they're rare in mint condition that's for certain. I enjoy my barrel band 30-30 a great deal.

Of all the models, I would think the 99H is the most commonly encountered in 30-30.

Would y'all say that once the .300 was introduced that it became the most common caliber across the board in all models? Perhaps not by much, but seemingly in the majority nonetheless.
Picked up a 99G with 20" barrel a few weeks ago. Gun is gray, but it's right....

I would say that once the .300 had became an established round that all other 30 caliber 99s would have become obsolete. I think the 30-30 held on by virtue of the Winchester 94 and Marlin 93/36/336 while the .303 barely held on at all before the war. But once you have the 99 in .300 then why go back to anything less. Wouldn't that be like pulling the 427 out of your Shelby Cobra and replacing in with a 289? Few ever argue for reduced performance.
Have a 1919 Model A take down & a 1935 unchecked EG both in 30 30. Might be an interesting collection to work on 30 30's in each Savage 1899/ 99 models made. Or just by all the 1899/99's you can and the family can flood the market after I croak. GW
Greetings!

I enjoy the company of both an A and a B model, solid framed
straight grip un checkered 30 30.

Best Regards to all
Jim
I almost pulled the trigger on A D&T 99H in 30-30 tonight but it just kept creeping higher. I would love to have a 99F or an 1899H

" Are they most common in 99H?"

I've collected data on every 99-H that I could read a serial number on over the last several years (229, so far) and the calibers are as follows:

30-30 = 50% 20 years
303 = 35% 20 years
250 = 10% 8 years
300 = 5% 2 years

PS...anyone who has added one to their collection please let me know. I would like to add the details to my list. smile

Well that explains why I have 30-30, 303, 250 but no 300. YET.... wink
Thanks for the stats Rick99.

As is only fitting. They are Savage rifles, after all. grin

I actually went through and sold off most of my 30-30's about 6 years back in order to pick up others in 303 Savage. Just what I wanted to do. Think I only have 3 30-30's now, SRC, EG and an engraved.

I know where a 99h barrel band is for sale in 300. Ok shape. Think it has swivels as well. Not cheap though.

Here is the percentages for all my pre-WWII rifles:

.303 38%
.30-30 22%
.300 15%
.250 8%
.22 8%
.25-35 4%
.32-40 2%
.38-55 2%

The above is skewed by price, availability, preference, the way I felt that day...

The 99-H data should be very close as it is all data found over a fair sample size.

I have 7 30-30's, 20 303's, 7 250's and 18 300's. I glad this post came up, I'd never thought to count them by caliber. David
I want a 30-30. I guess I back-slid tonight: 99F 243 got in the way. It just tripped me up.
Rick- my H in 30-30 is 2906XX
I have a T in 30-30; I would guess by the time of the T the 30-30 would not have been too popular.
A 99T 30-30 sounds like a neat deer chasing unit.
Sadly, my deer chasing days are gone. Buddy was up to the forty in the UP, and saw not a single deer, and heard very, very few shots. The area has turned into a deer desert.
Have anything to do with a growing wolf population?
According to a Michigan DNR publication a few years ago, the deer mortality rate in the UP is wolves, autos, and hunters, in that order, although I may have the first two reversed. I would like to see if my memory is correct; maybe one of the Michiganders on the forum recalls this. It was in the hunting or hunting and fishing guidebook.

Dave--

I believe you have the stats correct: Wolves first, then cars, and hunters get the leftovers.
