My new to me 24D 22mag/20 is shooting about 6" low at 50yds. Has fold down rear sight, and it's adjusted full up. Anybody got any ideas?

That rear fold down site is probably a Williams, that's what Savage used on the 24's, although I've never seen one on a rimfire 24, only the centerfire "V" models.

It should be in a 3/8th dovetail on the barrel.

If you go to Williams web site, they make that rear sight in several different heights, a taller height should solve the problem. The only other alternative is to shorten the front sight, and Williams has the front sight in varying heights also.

It's the exact same sight as on my 222/20... I did see an old ad showing one in this configuration, I think.

Replace rear with a taller sight or file down the front.

Formula for correction:
Distance to target in inches = 50 yds * 36= 1800

Divide the 1800 by the length between front and rear sight. (I don't have that number so will say it is 20") 1800/20= 90

So, if you raise the rear or lower the front by .001" it will move the impact point at target by .090".

To correct the 6" low... 6"/.090= 66.67 or raise the rear or lower the front by .066" (little over 1/16"). Don't forget to put in the correct distance between sights.

Savage also used a lot of Lyman 16 sights. They come in A, B, and C heights. The C is the tallest.

Just google lyman 16C and you should find several sources for them at decent prices.

Thanks for the help guys! Looks like it should be an easy fix. Anybody ever run a peep on one of these?

My math tells me that the sight from base of dovetail to top of blade needs to be .544.

Never ran a peep. For a walkabout gun, I like see thru rings(much as I hate see thru rings), that way I can use the scope for the .22 Mag or .223, and the irons for slugs in the 20 gauge barrel.
