Got to think about that. David

Don't think too long, or it'll be gone. Nice ones don't come along every day. And when they do someone snaps it up.

I have each of the "F"s. My mint .243 is the second from the bottom. I'd be hard pressed to let it go for billy's price.

Odd, there doesn't look to be enough guns there to be all the calibers that the F where offered in?! I could easily be confused though.

Shouldn't there be a takedown, straight-grip checkered "F" in that picture to make it more complete?

I've posted about mine here before, and was told it was a rather rare model from the late 30's.

I'm honestly not trying to be critical, just seeking to expand my knowledge of 99's,

Talking post war pre mil F's here...

I think. confused

Yeah, he doesn't have a postmil cut checkering 99F in 284 there either. grin

But great set of 1950's 99F's!
Posted By: Longbeardking Re: Minty 243F For Sale - 06/07/17
Guys.......................I am so sorry for not being totally specific. But since Billy showed a 50's F I showed mine. I really don't know why I did it but I did. I have the 5 calibers offered in the 50's F. I did not show my "near" mint checkered F and I had a .284 post mil a few weeks ago that was given to me TOTALLY FREE from a nephew in Oregon. When I got it, I HONESTLY couldn't bring myself to put it in my collection so I sent it back. Granted, it's not cut checkered, but nonetheless it falls into the category of post mil, AND it was a .284. It is now back in Oregon, where it belongs. I hear that they are popular out there. . I have only 2 post mils. A NIB CE and a post mil lever safety E in .358 win which was given to me in 1973 by my deceased father in law. All I was trying to say was that if you want an F in .243 Win of the quality Billy was offering, you ought to bite the bullet and open your wallet. That's pretty much the only way you'll get one.

Here's my checkered F and an SRC that might also fit.

We're off topic here OldNo7, but in answer to your question, no take down belongs in that group.
Your rifle is a 99F, take down, ~1920-1940's.
The pic above is 99F, solid frame, ~1950's.
If interested in going a little deeper into 99F differences, features, calibers, etc., getabookgetabookgetabook. wink

I can fix you up with a signed, numbered and inscribed copy of "A Collector's Guide to the Savage 99, etc" for $65 shipped. Send check to: David Royal, p.o. box 1271, Pinedale, Wy., 82941 and a uniformed government messenger (postman or post woman) will deliver it to your door. It even has a pic of a checkered pre-warII 99F on page 78. The 99F (post war) is covered on pages 85 and 86 and a dissertation sorting out confusing 1899/99 nomenclature is on pages 86 and 87. David

Haha, its awesome Steve... I was just picking on you since I haven't been around in so long. I agree 100% with your assessment...first of all, I don't blame you for sending that postmil 284 back (UGLY!!) and if anyone wants a minty premil 99F in a Win caliber, be prepared to pony up a few bucks. I know that i paid a good bit for a lot of 243s that were either minty but drilled for sling studs (incredibly common on the premil 99Fs) or sub-minty but without sling studs... heck, I've owned or own at least 5 premil 99Fs in 243 and I'm not sure even one of them is truly minty minty.
