Even the economy version of this gun is beautiful. This was given to me about 3 years ago by my wife's grandfather. The only wear on it was a couple of rust spots on both sides of the barrel near the sights, which so kindly used steel wool to remove. Now I just have bright spots. It's chambered for .308.

I bought a sling for it, but think I'm going to use it on another rifle now. I'm interested in getting a Savage barrel-band sling stud for this. What models were they found on?

I also plan to mount a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33 matte in tip-off mounts (which I purchased from somebody on this board).

I know the butt pad is ugly, but it helps and is ok for now.

Here's a pic:

I don't know what you mean by Savage barrel band sling stud - have never seen one. There are sling studs that attach to the barrel but not Savage made.

I have a stud set that replaces the forearm screw.

Another alternative to attatching studs of any kind to the gun is to buy a leather sling with adjustable loops on each end. IIRC one manufacturer is Levi Leather. I believe they are located in Canada. Here's the link.

Nice E... and I don't think I've ever said those words before.

Nothing wrong with an "E". Might not be as pretty as a
pre-mil, but sure beats the ^*% out of other brands of
lever guns. I bought one new in 1982 and I have never
hunted for deer in Arkansas mountains without it. You
keep it in that condition and give it a few years and the
price will go up just as much as your apprecation of what a
great hunting rifle is.

Don't cut on it, or drill into the wood. Buy slip on recoil
pads and slings. KEEP IT ORIGINAL

Sorry, I thought there was a barrel band on some. I'm going to have to look through things now to come up with where I got that from.

Thanks Calhoun, I think so too.

+1 Jerry, even an E is better than most others. Think I'd take an E over any Wincritter 88 for example.. lots more style to it than a Marlin or Winchester 94.. it's just that so many of them look like truck rifles or something that came out of a cracker jack box. If they all looked like this, they'd have a much better rep.

Course, I first learned to shoot and love 99C's, and I think C's are even more reviled here than E's (in general). Now those schnabel forearms have got me.

I'll take an early E over a NIB C any day.
