I recently obtained a pre-war 99 (#3431xx). The wood is
shot, but I want to restore it to as close to original as
possible.

Thoughts so far have me guessing it was an "R" except
that "Savage 99" is on top of the receiver.

I believe it needs a Ramp rear sight and new wood. any
help in nailing down the model and replacement wood,
sights, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

She shoots fine, and the metal is in very good shape. I
hope to save as much of her as I can.

let me know if the pic's don't show.

Well, going by Murray's, we could have a 99E, 99A, 99R or 99RS. Earlier R's still had Savage 99 on top, so don't rule that out.

I presume it's a 300 Savage with a 24" barrel?

Okay.. now I'm gonna give it to ya straight. Pay $30 to JC and get a letter. Anything else will be just an educated guess. This should date to 1933'ish and you should still be able to get a nice letter. 1937 is where records start getting scarce, I believe.
Hate to be mean, but I think it is a 99 B as in Bubba. Honestly it is hard to tell since the wood has been dicked with so bad. Get a Letter, that will be the only way to know what wood you really need, Calhouns is correct. les
Thanks guys.

I will put my check in the mail today. This is my first
project gun, so the letter will be a nice addition.

My records show it was made in mid-to-mid-late 1933.
Is that a jeweled bolt or an optical delusion? Don't think that would be right. Maybe I'm just blind.
i've seen jeweled bolts on earlier rifles....and believe them to b factory.
Thats a real expensive letter seeing that all its good for is to say what the rifle use to be but ain't no more.
Looks like someone was trying to ruin a good savage by turning it into a rem 700 BDL.
Verrry interesting.
