Vince started some great threads that are ongoing for Rick Menefee, Brett Dowell, and Dale Howe. Folks just continue to add to the same thread. They are great threads. In that same spirit, this thread is going to be for David Winston. Please continue to add to this thread as y'all do to the others mentioned above. Thank You.

Passport, pretty sure that's his model #69. I think I have that some knife only with red G-10 scales - its a darn fine knife IMHO.

Correct it is a model #69 in Caribou, awesome knife and very comfy handle.

I think INTHEMTNS is right, it's a Model 45. David had a special piece of splalted maple that had lots of character and lighter color changes in it, and these scales were some that were made from it.
Posted By: antlers Re: David Winston Knives - 11/08/13
[Linked Image]
Those jigged and fluted bone scales that he puts on some of his knives, like the skinner pictured here, are some of the best looking scales that I've seen. And I really like that thick looking shiny finish that he puts on em'. The lines on his skinners are really pleasing to my eye...!

Antlers, I agree. His skinners are great looking, great working knives, and the jigged bone scales are just that extra special touch. I must say though, the two you posted above are beauties also. That red handled skinner has me ready to pick up the phone to give David a call. That one is just amazing.

Appears to be a fairly decent Bear too.

Well done all the way around.

INTHEMNTS-

What material are the scales on your 69 with mosaics plz?

The 2nd one. Not the antler, the wood scales.

While you're at it, what's the last one pictured also? I looked at Dave's site. The homepage shows 5-7 of the same knife in various scales, but I can not find a knife that matches showing a Model number.
Posted By: INTHEMTNS Re: David Winston Knives - 11/18/13
The brown one is a maple burl I believe I purchased it a couple years ago and the next is dyed box elder burl #70 and the red G-10 one is a model #43, I know he has the #69 advertised on his page but you will have to ask him for the #70 it is a really nice pattern little smaller then the #69 handle, hopefully that answers your question.

Yep. He calls it a bone-breaker notch. Break the bone, then go through the break instead of using the cutting edge to go through the bone.

This knife is from a different maker, but he had the same idea too...!
Posted By: rta48 Re: David Winston Knives - 11/23/13
We'll I could see how the Winston could work. But I am lost on that one. But you know there had to be a market or these guys would not have wasted their time. I guess.

The quality of the work looks pretty dang good.

This maker actually calls it a squirrel knife. You put the squirrel's leg in the notch, break the bone, then cut through the break instead of using the cutting edge to go through the bone.
Posted By: rta48 Re: David Winston Knives - 11/23/13
Antlers, have you ever tried using one of the knives for this purpose? Just wondering how effect it was?
Posted By: antlers Re: David Winston Knives - 11/23/13
Yep, and it works like a charm.

Could I get by without it...? Yep.
Is it kinda cool to have anyway...? Yep.
Posted By: FieldGrade Re: David Winston Knives - 11/23/13
Might be handy for cutting fishing line;) but it's not for me.

It is well executed and a nice knife though. To each his own.

Posted By: rta48 Re: David Winston Knives - 11/23/13
That is actually really cool. I've been skinning tree rats for over 50 years and never gave anything like that a thought. I guess I just don't have a creative mind frown

David knives look great

Glad to see you posting again
Thanks. I have been most of the day getting a couple of pictures and then figuring how to get them posted. My photo host and the Campfire keep logging me off. Don't know if it is them or my computer.

These knives are for the "Catch A Dream Foundation". A nice group of people that are doing good things for kids. If anyone is interested you can see what they are doing here:
www.catchadream.org

Their mission is to provide hunting and fishing trips for children who have life threatening illness. A once in a lifetime for a chance to get out and enjoy something for a few days besides something connected to a hospital.

I am glad to have been given a chance to be affiliated with this group.

Not here to raise funds but they can use donations, no matter how small.

Good on ya for helpin' them out David. Damned fine thing to help the kids
nice work David. I did a make a wish for a young man with a life threatening illness. We built him a saddle of his choise and all the gear for it. Great orginization. It's a great feeling to help out especially kids. My hats of to you sir.

No problem! I think a reasonable amount of bumping is fine, and nobody would think you are overdoing it by a long shot! smile

However, some of the guys selling stuff that they bump every hour can get a bit irritating... Well, unless they are slashing the price every hour perhaps... wink

I have liked my orange knives in the past just for that reason. Not sure how many times I have struggled to find a knife I set down while field dressing. All my non-orange knives get orange lanyards.

Just curious,

How does the 45 compare to the 43?
The 43 has a slightly longer and wider blade with a little more belly. The handle is also a bit bigger on the 43 and more square at the end. It was a tough choice between the two.

I was sooo close to pulling the trigger on that knife. And I should have. I am not a snob of scales and prefer a working knife. But I am in the que with David for a #69 right now and soooo would love to have him build me that same knife.
This is my newest on its way from David. It's a 45 with a 1/4" longer blade. I liked the handle of the 45, but the longer blade length of the 43 so I had this made. It has black scales over orange liners with black pins. Really looking forward to this one.

I am thinking on a #42 build as well.

Picture is from Davids website (hope he doesn't mind), there are several pictures of #42's shown. This one comes pretty close to what I am looking for.

I like your idea of "softening" the handles.

He softened the scale edges. And even the spine on the blade. Fots great in the hand.

Soon to be another on order.
Posted By: antlers Re: David Winston Knives - 07/23/16
Dehorning the edges on the spine like that is just another touch of class. And that glass bead-blasted blue G-10 looks really great. It certainly provides a sure grip. That is a very nice custom and I'd be proud of it too...!
