Anyone shooting the ole 35 whelen with 225 Sierra gamekings? My ole pos savage absolutely loves this load. I’m gone try and take out one before season ends, what’s y’all’s results like with this load?

I load these and 225 accubonds in mine. Using 2000-mr powder and liking the speed and accuracy

Interesting topic.

( I always thought the BLR would have been a useful rifle).

i plan on using my Ruger #1 35 Whelen for bear hunting in Minnesota next fall if i draw a tag ?
Posted By: MedRiver Re: 35 whelen - 01/25/24
My Ruger rebore likes the 225 Sierra better than anything else. Has worked great on deer and bear…

This is one I dug out of a mule deer after it entered the inside shoulder and got lodged in the hide in front of the offside ham.

I found a deal on loaded Remington 250gr Roundnose, 250gr Spitzer and 200gr spitzers for $30 a box so I have a few hundred loaded that I need to shoot through for some brass. I’ve also set aside 2 boxes of 200gr Federal Fusion that were priced right. The 200’s are to shoot through and make brass. Sportsman’s Whorehouse has the same exact stuff for $89.95. I’m gonna grab a couple hundred more tomorrow but I really want to load up the 250 and 280gr A-Frames for my Whelen. The 225TTSX is as light as I’ll normally carry since it’s main purpose is to put heavy rounds into heavy critters.

I’m looking forward to giving it a good workout soon. I have always wanted a Whelen ever since I was in elementary school and I read about what it was designed for. Then and there I KNEW I HAD to live where big guns were “necessary”. 😀

225gr. Sierra Game Kings were my go to bullet with IMR 4064, the last few seasons I've been shooting 200gr. Hornady Inter-loks over IMR 3031. Both loads are outstandingly accurate in my pre'64 M/70 Redman rebore. I've taken several deer with each load, only recovered one Hornady it retained 66% of original weight and was perfectly mushroomed.

The 225 gr nosler partition has never let me down in.my m77 rs 35 Whelen but I am going to run.out of 4320..mb

Seems the 225 grain .358 is a rare commodity these days. Other than the classifieds and the occasional gun show find they are pretty tough to come by in my experience. I think I have around 1000 250 and probably about the same in 200 spire points though. If Sierra ever makes a 225 again I'll be stocking up.
Posted By: beretzs Re: 35 whelen - 01/25/24
Same as MedRiver, I use the 225 Sierra in my 35 Whelen pump guns. I use H4895 for about 2700 in the 22" and I haven't chrono'ed it in the carbine, but in either case, it swats stuff right on down. Great bullet! Accurate as well.

These were a couple groups I shot from the 22" Whelen 7600 with the 4X on it. Pretty happy with it.

I shot Nosler "35 Whelen" 225g for a long time. The last time I saw them up for sale they were over 80 for a box of 50. So, I switched to 223g Hammer bullets and my rifle has really shot them well. I have a metric ton of 250g Hornady round nose and spire point and even more 200g Corelokt. But the 225g-ish bullets have always shot the best for me.

I have not.

For years my goto deer rifle was an encore pro hunter in the 35 wheeler.

I shoot the factory loaded 185 ( or 180 maybe ) TTSX.

Puts the bang flop on em.

I shoot the 225 gn Sierras in mine and have for several years. They work well on deer. They group better than the other bullets I have tried. I caught one in a 10 point a few years ago shot straight on in the chest. Found it under the skin in a ham. Looked like a Core Lokt commercial.
Posted By: Hammer2506 Re: 35 whelen - 01/25/24
I’ve yet to make a kill with the 225, I killed several with the factory 200gr hornady superformance, all were pass throughs and mostly drt. I shot one with the 250gr speer sp, bullet entered straight in the chest and found it under the hide on the left ham, it didn’t open up much but did penetrate well, I beleive the 250 is a little much for deer.

I don't know, I shot a button buck several years ago with the 250 speer. It was quartering and went in at the rear ribs and out just behind the offside shoulder. Not much resistance at all and that little deer went straight down and quick. Good sized exit with signs of expansion.

Shot a button buck 250 core loc. 30 yards in the chest. Took the front out of the deer

225 Sierra is a great bullet. Works great on deer and elk.
Posted By: railman58 Re: 35 whelen - 01/25/24
My only whitetail shot using a Sierra 225 with 55 grs H4895 was at about 40 yds top of the left side shoulder, exit behind right shoulder. Dropped at the shot, slide 10 ft and the blood trail was 6 ins wide. It did well.
Posted By: navlav8r Re: 35 whelen - 01/26/24
I’ve used the Sierra 225 on deer only, in the 35 Whelen and 350 Rem mag at 2550-2600 fps. I’ve also used the discontinued 225 Ballistic Tip and 225 Accubond in the Whelen at 2700 fps. If you find Hornady 200 grain spitzer, don’t be afraid to use them …they work great. They’re not very streamlined but they are good “stompers” in both cartridges at 2600 fps.

Nope. The 250 gr Partition and 250 gr Speer early on, the 225 gr TSX since.

I’m sure those partitions hit like a ton of bricks.

Mississippi made them legal in break action rifles for primitive weapons years ago. Me and my hunting buddies shot encores with the game king and killed several dozen with them throughout the years. I grew to love that cartridge but I hated the encore. The Whelen with that bullet is a lot of fun to hunt with. Id not be afraid to shoot anything with it. Looking for a beater pawn shop rifle I can rebarrel to Whelen. Absolutely no need for it anymore but I just feel like I need one. We also tried the 225 accubonds when we ran out of the sierras. It shot well and killed fine too. I liked the sierras the best though

MS started will the straight wall .45” ?

I got a handi rifle 45-70.
Synthetic stock. It was a kicker…

Then MS said .444 were legal.

Went with the handi rifle in .444 marlin.

Then they said .35 whelen was legal.
Went with encore in .35 whelen.
Found an encore prohunter a factory brake in a LGS.
Only seen 2 like that.

Being lefty, the encore is ideal for me.

Did send it to Jim Hendershot (?) to have a new 2.5# trigger spring put in and drill and tap for an over travel screw.

I’ve been more than happy with it.

Sierra needs to make more of those bullets. Accubonds are real good. I’ve had great luck with them in my 358.
Posted By: ShadeTree Re: 35 whelen - 01/29/24
Several boxes of those 225 Sierra's left over at a local shop in 2022 were $24 a box, but I don't shoot them or have never shot them. Bought them for a guy in WV that was looking for them and shipped them off to him. I don't think I've seen any since.

I'm currently shooting a souped up turbo charged 35 Remington load or soft 358 Win load in my Whelen. 43 gr's of IMR 4198 with the Speer 180 FP shoots well and gets 2475. Recoils like a 35 Rem but is a good bit more of a good thing with that Speer 180 for whitetails.

Who made that stock?
Posted By: Sako76 Re: 35 whelen - 01/31/24
No I haven’t! My Nosler Outfitter likes the Remington factory 200 grain Core-Lokt. I bought a bunch of 200 grain Accubonds here and need to try them out.

If you ever see more, grab em ST, I’ll send payment however you want.

My 250gr partition hammered a 200lb sow last September in Minnesota. She never even twitched.

Sure thing bud. Doubt they will be at that price if I run across some, but I'll keep an eye out.

I have a Rem 700 Classic in .35 Whelen and have been using it for the last 24 years. Mine shoots the 225 gr. Sierra quite well. Unfortunately they are hard to find but I have taken deer and a small black bear with that load. Not a tough bullet but plenty for deer
