Does anybody have any first hand experience with the Hornady SST in 270? My Weatherby Ultralight shoots MOA or better with them and I was thinking about using them on my annual West Virginia whitetail hunt. I think they would be fine, but I am a little concerned over a close range shoulder shot.
shoot behind the shoulder.

I used a 154 grain .284 SST out of my 7mag to take a doe at about 25 yds. My guess is it was running b/t 2800 and 2900 fps. I use 60 grains of RL-22. To slow it down more I'll probably have to swich powders. I know this: had I hit shoulder I'd of wasted both shoulders. I've Read about how destructive they can be and now I am a believer. The bullet did what it was designed to do; kill the deer, and with authority. Entry was a pencil hole, exit blew through 3 ribs. Soup on the inside. I like the bullet but don't expect great things if you hit bone.

I should add, "...at magnum velocities."

It penetrates plenty well.

I shoot 130 grain SST's out of my 270 win. It's pentrated over 1/2 of the body length wise.

Don't give it a second thought. Go hunting.
I've seen the immediate aftermath of 2 Mule Deer taken with 130 SSTs (Hornady factory load) in the .270. Both were good sized mature deer. The first was about 100 yards frontal quartering shot. The guy said there was not much reaction to the shot, but the deer went a few yards and died. We found the bullet while skinning in front of hind quarter and was nicely mushroomed. The second was a bit over 300 yards and broke the shoulders and exited (deer dropped). Not much evidence, but was plenty of penetration in both cases.

Haven't used those but have used the 140 Nosler BT on a lot of deer and hogs with no problems at all. The SST is Hornady's version of the same bullet and I would guess works about the same.

I've never hunted/shot deer with a 270 but have used a 280 a bit. This is with 139gr SSTs so I figure that's close enough to the 270/140gr. In any event, last deer I shot with the 280 load was through both shoulders at 75-80 yards. Deer went about two body lengths and dumped over. At leat a part of the bullet exited as there was a hole on the opposite shoulder. It was a doe but a good sized one.

We quit using them in my wife's .280 and my .257 AI because of the extensive amount of bloodshot meat that they produced. But with a hit in the boiler room, they do kill things dead right there.
I like Hornady products a lot but their SST is not a good one IMO. I had two (a 150gr .308, and 139gr .284) come apart after hitting just one rib. Neither bullet exited despite slow MVs (2550ish) and the deer were 25 and 40 yards away. Penetration was not good either as only one lung was taken out on both deer. I want two holes in whatever I shoot so I switched to the Interbond. A MUCH better bullet.

The SSTs are accurate but I still would not use them on anything bigger than a coyote.

I quit using them and that is one of the reasons for it. I never had a failure or problem, but didn't need all that blood shot meat. I now use 139gr Hornady SP interlocks.
I don't care about blood shot meat on the shoulders, not much meat there anyway.

I shot the 130 SST in a 270 with 58g of R#22 and 60g of H4831; 154 sst in a 7 Mag with 63.0g of IMR 4350, Rem brass, 9 1/2 primer. The 154g proved to kill bucks DRT at 300-325 yds, and the 130g SST killed deer so dead, I wondered if there was a need for much more bullet or larger caliber...time will tell.

140 Will do extremely well for you, just remember not to focus on the horns...Hee Hee!
