Well guys, thanks for all of your inputs. Today I purchased a rifle for my 16 year old kid. I found a new Model 700 Remington, BDL deluxe Ingraved, 270 Winchester caliber for a good price. The bolt is the normal 700 bolt before the funny locking mechanism came out. So I suspect it is 4-5 years old. It was the floor model, no scratches, or marks, and between the older bolt with no locking mechanism, and the nice ingraving on top of the receiver and the floorplate (has a Ram in the middle of the floor plate), I decided this was his rifle from me. If he doesnt like the stock, he can always put something different on at a later date. I shot a 270 win for years, and in the end, it came down to proven caliber, doesnt beat up your shoulder, good flat shooter for the west, and plentiful ammo available at most stores. Just seemed like the thing to do.

Then, after I did that today, I went by my gunsmith, and low and behold he had just taken posession of a Model 77 Ruger, Tang safety model, 25-06 with a 24 inch bull barrel. The rifle was in cherry condition, so I decided I needed it as my next toy. At least it keeps the reloading busy, and I figure either of my boys are welcome to shoot the 25-06 if I am not hunting with it. Ya just gotta love it. Now if I can just survive the 10 day waiting period here in CA!!!
You did good my man. A Remighton 700 in .270 AND a tang safety 77 IN 25-06. They is both gonna be shooters! You got the deer hunting covered in spades
Dog, I am biting at the bit to start reloading for the 25-06, going to probably try some Barnes Triple Shocks in it, and maybe an interbond, or such. The 700 I bought is a sweet looking rifle, with the engraving on it. Now I have to get a couple of scopes, probably put a VX II 3 by 9 on them, maybe a bushnell 3200 Elite on the 25-06, but I want a Leapold on his 700 for certain.
Man you did some serious shopping ! They both sopund like good shooters. I sure would have like to have had a engraved 270 as my first rifle. I got a beat up old Nazi model 98 in 8x57 mm.
Hard to go wrong with either for Texas deer hunting, or Kalifornia or anywhere else for that matter. I have a 77 tang safety in 25-06 and it is a real shooter and both of my 270's get the job done nicely. You done GOOD!!

I guess I am just going to have to accept that you guys spell CA with a K..........I'm tired of getting mad over it.....LOL. Yes, I feel pretty good about both rifles also. Either could be candidates for a custom barrel and or cartridge at a later date. I have always wanted a 25-06 to shoot, and I think it is hard to argue against a 270 for muledeer on down for someone who doesnt want heavy recoil. I think my 16 year old is really going to like the 270. I sure liked mine for many years. The fancy engraving was gravy, I dont think the store understood the real value of that rifle, engraving, plus older model 700 without the funny locking mechanism.
Aggiedog--nicely done-the boy should be very happy!

Now get him to the hill.

"GET TO THE HILL"

My 270 wears a Leupold 4x12 and my 26 inch heavy barreled 25-06 wears a Leupold 6.5x20. That 25-06 is a good long range varmint/deer rifle. See the group attached.

PDS,
Where do you do most of your shooting at? I live north of you near Sherman and go through McKinney every day on my way to work in Plano. Most of the ranges I have found are only good for 100 yards. I have access to a 250 yard range, but it is on a friends place and I never seem to catch him at home when I have the chance to go shoot.

I've only been in McKinney snice July and I am looking for a range. I still have a deer lease in Ozona and own a home in San Angelo. I have a good friend in Oklohoma who has a 200 yard range too. I have to travel to shoot.

Hopefully things will slow down at work a little and I'll get to a range around here.

Drop me a pm. Maybe we could have coffee sometime.

Aggie, You live in Northern California, maybe they'll give you a break on the K !

Glad you got your son a rifle, and enjoy that 25-06. It sounds like you two are all set for some good father/son hunting trips. I know you tow will enjoy the time together. I've certainly enjoyed the trips with my son. They grow up fast don't they...

Nevada, ya, alot of people dont really know much about Northern CA, all they see is Hollywood, LA and San Fran on TV. Best Rocky Mountain Mule Deer I have ever taken was a nice 4X5, 30 inch heavy horned, muley near Fort Bidwell in far northern CA, near the NV and Or, border.

Well, I bit another bullet and went out and purchased two Leupold VX-II, 3 X 9 40 mm scopes to mount on these rifles. I just really like the plentiful eyerelief of the Leupolds, plus their optics are pretty nice. I've got the brass, powder, and 25-06 dies, I already have 270 dies from when I shot it. What day is this, man this will be a long 10 day wait.
