Since the early 1970's, I've tried just about every brand and bullet weight in our 30-30 carbines. Had great luck with performance of Winchester 170 grain Power Point. But never hunted with this unique hollow tip ammo by Remington. Have you ever tried it? Impressions: accuracy, size of wound channel, penetration?

They are an old, out of date design that had a rep for not opening quickly. Which is not good in the .30-30. I'd stick with the Power Points. E

Used them for a few deer. Worked OK. Not better not worse. Kinda hard to mess up a 30-30.

I have a question since we are talking about 30-30s. I know that there cannot be much difference between the 150 and 170 grain loads but am just wondering if by and large do the 150's penetrate all the way through on close range broadside shots? I am planning on starting out with the Federal powershoks because my 336 is shooting them pretty well.


I have never killed a deer with a 30-30 and am going to try one this fall. To the OP, I have read on Marlinowners that the 150 grain Winchester powermax hollowpoint is the "nastiest" 30-30 bullet out there when it comes to tissue damage. You might want to check them out if you want to use a hollowpoint.....but I have no firsthand knowledge of them.

I believe at one time Winchester also made a 150-grain hollow point .30/30 load. I never used it nor did I ever use the 170-grain Remington hollow point.

I've loaded and shot a few of the 170 grain HPCL 30-30 bullets back in the late 1980s. I thought that they opened a little slower than the 170 grain RNCL bullets, so I went back to the proven performer.

Although there probably isn't any meaningful difference between them, I like the 170 grain RNCL 30-30 bullet for woods hunting with the 30-30, 300 Savage, 307,and 308. I have friends who swear by the 150 and 170 grain Winchester ST, but I have always liked the Remington 170 grain RNCL better than any other bullet in the 30-30 and 300 Savage for deer. I also shoot the 170 grain Partition, but don't think that the Partition is necessary at 30-30 and 300 Savage speeds. As with many things, YMMV.

till I started loading the PMC ElDorado Starfire 150 grain HP was my go-to load.

Jocko, the win 150 HPs are quite expansive for a 30-30. I shot several hogs with that bullet and was surprised at the damage compared to typical RN 30-30 pills.

RJY, I've had about the same performance from both 150s and 170s on close range kills. At 30-30 MVs I personally just go with what shoots the best.

I shot a buck qtring to at around 30yds with a 150 Cl. Smashed the shoulder, took out the goodies, and came to rest at the hide near the back of the off side ribs. Text book mushroom with good retention.

I also shot through a sapling about 10 foot from a big 8pt with a 170PP and the bullet still went in the buck enough to break his neck in front of the shoulder. Would a 150 have done that? IDK. Got lucky to even hit him(didn't see the sapling in the dark timber).

150 grain core-lokts typically do exit on broadside shots. 150 gr. Win. Power points expand more easily and to a wider mushroom and don't exit as often. Can't say what you'll get with Federal 150's as I've never used them. 170 gr. bullets do usually penetrate more than 150's. I've never recovered a 170 core-lokt or Silvertip except on lengthwise shots, even though I've put them through both shoulders on heavy bodied bucks several times.

I have only recovered one 150gr core lokt and that was a front on lengthwise shot. Bullet recovered fully mushroomed under the hide on the back just above the tail.

It's sort of funny with all the various rifles and cals I use these days. I remember several big bucks that dropped at the shot with my lil' ole dirty thirty. Need to blow the dust off it I suppose. Thinking about mounting a 2-7x32 Nikon I have laying in the gun room.

I've found that Remington 150 grain core-lockt produces best accuracy in my Glenfield carbine. I've taken several mulies with this outfit well beyond 100 yards. Most of the time, the expanded bullet did not exit.

My Winchester carbine likes 170 grain ammo by FEDERAL & Winchester best of all. I'll continue to hunt with this 30-30 most of all.

I would not believe the HP would open reliably at .30-30 velocities. Lots of folks say they do though, so I am probably worrying about that for nothing.
I have never had a problem with Speer 170 grain hot core FP bullets in my rifles.

Beautiful picture, cant wait till fall, have always ran 170 Nosler partitions in mine, first bullet I tried in it, was so accurate I didnt try anything else.
It has never let me down, kills better and penetrates more than I ever thought a little 30/30 could.

And, dead wrong.

Between myself and two uncles, we've killed literal dozens with the 170 Core-Lokt JHP and the 150 Power-Point JHP over the last 15 years.

Absolutely devastating bullet.

In a .30-30, it's (IMHO and EXPERIENCE) THE bullet.

Definitive expansion, very good penetration, superb wound channel. And, plenty good accuracy.
