I've run across quite a few deer carcasses over the years, but this is a new one. Just the head, cut off right below the skull. Small to medium size doe, maybe fawn.

Bottom side still had the hid and looked pretty recent, top side was chewed down to the skull. Fairly clean cut through the hide.

So.. what the heck critter out there could/would detach the head? Wasn't there 2 months ago, isn't a victim of our EHD epidemic last fall, guessing it was frozen for a while considering the difference in condition of top and bottom - Dec/Jan was pretty darned cold. Rest of body was nowhere to be found..

Blurry cell phone pics, sorry.

if its cut off, there is only one possible choice.
Couldn't tell if it was cut off with a knife, or just a neat separation.

It's up in the sandhills.. one set of neighbors. Guess they might have shot a doe and tossed the head while processing it - then a coyote hauled it 300+ yards to where it was.
Bigfoot likes to detach the head like that. Matt Moneymaker from Discovery's Finding Bigfoot would tell you that. And if you don't believe him you can just ask him.

grin
I've seen this before... They're called Meat Hunters, and they most likely dropped the carcass and head off in the area, and the head got drug by a yote or wolf to where it sits.
shocked

Jim, got 1 trailcam in the area. Pack of coyotes been traipsing over the place, and some night pictures I can't quite make out - probably the same coyotes. Looks to be 4 or 5 of them in all.

And I've also seen bobcat in the area, neighbor claims to have seen lion - and there's enough other verified sightings in that area that you know we can't rule them out.

Anyway, that's what I was wondering. Seen people cut off plenty of heads as they processed the deer, never saw a critter pull one off.

Hopefully it'll still be there and picked clean in a couple of months when I get back up there. Wife will LOVE that. grin
Could have been a bad shot by a hunter and the deer ran off and died , they yotes got it.

I had nothing to do with it.........
I'd bet that someone butchered the deer and the head got drug off...Not much meat in there for the scavengers, but I guess if they're hungry enough...they'll eat anything.
The teeth of Chupacabra can do this.... wink
Lions are around. Our neighbors have seen them on their place and I have seen the tracks. One was shot this year about 10 miles northeast of Ainsworth. 150 lb male.

Neat yote pics..... cool

That can't be far from Springview where I hunt. That's Lion country alright along the Niobrara Valley.
