I posted about the 260 Rem that I sold to my uncle and I bought it back from him on Wednesday. He has stage 4 cancer and has held on for 3 years. His time is running out so he asked if I wanted the Ruger back. Well, duh, yes I do.

Today was the opener for Wisconsin. Foggy to say the least. Visibility was about 100 yards, past that and you were guess as to what deer, horns or no, was in front of you. I had binoculars with so this really helped alot.

I saw 1 small buck at legal shooting light and a baldy 5 minutes later. I watched the fog roll through and took in the landscape. 45 minutes later I see a figure of a deer at about 200 yards. It stopped lowered it's head and looked forward then moved. I brought up the binoculars and threw them back down. The tine length was good so I grabbed the 260 with mojo and threw it up on the shooting sticks. Squeezed the trigger well and hit the buck in the left shoulder where I was aiming. He ran off into the woods. I followed him up and put a finisher in him. Okay, there is more to it than that but that story would be another thread and it would be looong!

My uncle was very thrilled with the outcome and pics. No tears were shed, just a huge smile on my face all day long.

Will be revisiting the performance of the 120gr cor-lokts. Not impressed. I have killed 3 deer with this load and the results were spectacular. This time, not so much.

The story from first shot to last is epic. Maybe some other time.

Thanks. Of course he had to make his way halfway down the valley before he quit. Pretty steep and slippery.

Split brow tines make it 10pts. Dressed out at 175. No fat on him. The guy was very active. Cut under his left eye that was very fresh with a gash that looked like it was a week old. The mass was very good on his rack.

Going to butcher tomorrow. Supposed to be 51 degrees and rain tomorrow. 2 doe tags left. They will get used along with a stunt rifle.

Nice buck, digging the hole in his horn in the second pic. I shot a 260 for the first 5 years it was on the market and hated the corelokt factory loads, shallow penetration and massive bloodshot. Went to Grandslams after the second buck and never caught one or had any problems.

I am interested in your comments on the Core Lokt rounds. I have had a little bit of mixed performance myself with them over the last few seasons.

I assume these are a handload? I know you used to be able to get the 120 as a component, but not in factory loads (that was the Accutip). I used the 140 Corelokt for the first couple years I had my 260 (Ruger boat paddle), until I began to reload for it. I found the 120gr Ballistic tips and 120gr Sierra ProHunters to be a better replacement, both of which have since been trumped by the 120gr TTSX (also the most accurate bullet to date in that rifle).

My custom 260 gets is on the Scenar diet.....

Any bullet can perform "sub par", especially on big deer.

I have used 140 cor-lokts and they did a good job crunching bone. Nothing blood shot really. I bought the 120 cor-lokts to reload and they worked really well up until this point. Dismal performance to say the least. Very accurate though. I got these for 12.99/100 back in 2007.

I have used 120 NBTs and they were great. 140 Horny daddys were ok. 129 SST gave good penetration, but like the 140 interlocks it shed the core. Heck, even 100 NBTs at 30 yards held together and made it under the skin on the far side. 100 NPTs did well but like the NBTs left a mess of the meat.

I have no opinion of the TSX. I have some loaded for a model 7 260 and haven't connected with anything yet. I should just run all 125 partitions or a TSX/TTSX in some weight not exceeding 120gr. I am not running these to 1000 yards so don't need the BC of a VLD type bullet.

My uncle is still texting me about this deer! He will be seeing the pics at his daughters tomorrow, his phone isn't the best for viewing pics.

Best year he had deer hunting with out having to go. He is very happy that we shared this rifle and the number of kills it has. I know at a minimum it has 13.

No, I have not tried the 125s. Nosler SPS had them about a month ago and I should have bought some.

I am going to do inventory of my 6.5 bullets soon and sell a few thousand that I don't use anymore. Should make room for the new test subjects.

I may even sell the Criterion sewer pipe I have on a savage.
Sometimes simpler is better even though I love all the rifles I have.

Great deer. I'll send you some 130 a-max if you would like to try. I have shot 4 or 5 deer with them.
