130 gr TTSX.

For everything.

i may try those. i dont reload but i can get em loaded

Hard to beat a hornady 150gr spire point for deer. Accurate, cheap, effective. Not trendy and no one wants to hear you brag about something old and cheap. I do not even use them, i prefer my old 165g Nosler BTs, Still working out of a 20 year old stash.

Either one but I use Nosler 165 PT's for everything from deer through Elk and don't have to mess w/ sights ect. I use book max loads of I-4064. Muddy

110 TTSX over 4895. 3100+ fps.
Posted By: Kimberman Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/18/14
I like a 165 cup n core that shoots good out of my rifle. One of my favs is the old Nosler Solid Base.
Posted By: old70 Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/18/14
165s over RL15 for me. Speer for practice and the NPT for hunting. Same POI out to 250 or so. But 150s work well too.
Posted By: Zrack656 Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/18/14
I prefer 150s but that is because my rifle tends to be most accurate with that weight. My guess is you will notice no difference in on game performance between the two.

I prefer the 150gr in my 308. They do quite well.
Posted By: Esox357 Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/18/14
Which ever bullet you have handy? From a logistics purpose I skip the 150 grain bullets and shoot 165 in 308 and the 06 both shoot this weight accurately so with a 15 grain advantage and shooting great in both calibers it is pretty much all I shoot.
Posted By: efw Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/19/14
Whatever; Deer aren't hard to kill.
Posted By: LNF150 Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/19/14
efw is correct. I honestly don't know how many deer I have killed here in KS over my hunting lifetime (easily dozens with all the extra tags) and they are not hard to kill. rifle, muzzleloader, bow doesn't matter. Do your job, you will be fine.

No friggin kiddin bro; they're holding a huge resentment against me this year frown !

I have had 100% penetration with a shoulder shot at 440 yards using a 165 hornady BTSP at 2510 MV on a 175# buck.
I've also shot deer at less than 30 yards with the same projectile and had explosive deformations and lightning fast kills.
Not to mention they shoot fantastic and a really in expensive and not overly sensitive to seating depth like the barnes.
All in all that means more practice time and less money spent.

I have one .308 WIN rifle, a Savage 99. For some odd reason it sprays 150 grainers, but the plain 165 grain Hornady SP prints to an inch. The problem is Hornady has stopped making them, so now I am going to switch to the 165 SPBT and pray it works.

2014 Hornady catalog shows the 30cal 165gr. InterLock item #3940. Maybe they are out and production hasn't brought up yet. That is what happened to their 338cal. 250gr.SP-RP bullets.
I got this from Huntington Die Specialties.
Hornady Makes Plans to Increase Production Volume- Hornady will temporarily suspending some (152+ HDS) items in order to focus efforts on the most popular and highest demand products. This is not a permanent suspension (possibly items will return in 2014 -HDS).

I have used 150's and they worked fine in my 99EG. Dropped a couple deer with them.

Then I switched to Federal Fusion, 165's.

They work good too...

Barnes 130 grain TTSXs.

3050 FPS is pretty normal for .308s and they will always give you two holes. They are easiest of the Barnes IME to get shooting really accurate and they kill very, very well. If there's an advantage to 150s or 165s for deer I sure haven't seen it in the ones I have used.
Posted By: bea175 Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/21/14
which ever one shoot's the best in your rifle , believe me a deer won't know the difference between 15 gr of lead . Remember the 17 HMR bullet only weight 17 gr take a look at it and in reality this is all you are giving up less 2 gr by using the 150 over the 165 .
Posted By: anie Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/21/14
I use factory ammo in my montana, barnes 150 ttsx and nosler accubombs 165,
Both shoot great, fly about the same.
Posted By: Blacktailer Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/21/14
Either. I wouldn't worry about going heavier than 150 until elk were on the menu.
Shoot straight, don't worry.

got it sighted in with 165gr sierra gamekings. now to find a deer
Posted By: keith Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/21/14
El Cheapo, 150g Hornady Flat base, same for the 165g Hornady Flat base, unreal accurate with a variety of powders, and are monster mashers on deer!

I also shoot the 130g TTSX at 3100*3200, jury is still out...I need a blood trail to follow in the jungles that I shoot in.

I killed a lot of deer with the old Sierra 135g Single shot pistol bullet with a load of 51-52g of 748...never lost a deer with that load...even huge bucks.

Nosler is now making the 125g Accubond in 30 Cal, that would be first on my high dollar list of bullets to try with the same load of 748.

.308 is too much gun for deer, get a .223 or .22-250.
Posted By: Gansettx Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/21/14
Used to shoot 150's out of my .308 20 years ago started loading 125 gr. Nosler ballistic tips over RL15 for ground hogs in spring...tried it on whitetail the following season, have never seen a reason for anything larger.
Posted By: Dancing Bear Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/22/14
I prefer 150's for deer.

For that matter they worked fine on elk but for some reason I switched to 165's for elk.
Posted By: JDK Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/22/14
Killed with both and saw no difference.

Posted By: Reloder28 Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 12/22/14
As long as the bullet goes in & comes out, what difference does it make how much it weighed?

I've always found 157.5 grain bullets far superior to 150's or 165's in the .308, but apparently none of the factories can be bothered to make them anymore during this stupid component "shortage."

You can always hacksaw a little off of the 165's grin

"best of both worlds" laugh

I've used 165s. Only because one of the first loads I tried in my Rem 788 shot into less than half an inch; 165 SGK over Varget.
Posted By: CrankEmUp Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 01/04/15
It depends on what your rifle shoots the best. I shoot a 150 Partition in a Fwt 308 with 47 gr of 4320. I like my guns to shoot tight groups and know what the bullet is going to do out in the distance. If my gun shot 165's then that is what I would shoot.
Posted By: rbell Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 01/04/15
I use primarily the 165, because on close shots I had two much wasted meat with a 150. depends on how hot you are loading them
Posted By: masrx Re: 308win - 150 or 165gr - 01/05/15
I am a new convert to the 165 game kings, on game performance excellent so far. I was skeptical but so far so good, only failed pass thru was on a 200 lb hog that I shot in the head at about 200 yes, but I can accept that.
