I have hunted Pa. quite a bit since I retired in 1999.. Have used various rifles there, starting with my old .30-06, a 7mm Wea., 270, .25-06, and a couple .300's. I have found several stands where I can watch old strip mines, and often get a long shot opening day, or on the Saturdays.. For this spot I use one of the .300's, but the .270 and .25-06 have taken a couple also..
For more traditional hunting I have a 7mm-08 with a fairly stiff barrel cut to 21".. I killed my last couple whitetails in Pa. with it.. It is doubtful I make the trip in the future, as the camp is being sold.. Fun while it lasted..

300 RUM sounds about perfect. I'd pass on the 308, not worth messing with those pipsqueak rounds.
Posted By: Ready Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/22/15
Yeah, kills em twice as big as a .30-30 as well.
Posted By: tmitch Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/22/15
What? I thought everyone there used Remington 760s in '06 loaded with 180gr Core-Lokts. laugh

Remington 700 Classic, 270 Win....
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/22/15
t, I often visit a huge gunshop in central Pa. when I am in that area.. I would say the Remington pump rifles are found in the greatest number on the used gun racks.. 06 is number one, but .270's follow a close second.. If I were living in that place I would have a Remington slide action in my safe.. Fortunately, I do not live there..

I have enjoyed hunting in PA over the years and done well. The old timer who had the farm where we stayed shot a Winchester M71 348 Win!

He used to say "When I fire a shot they know it's my 348!"

Now that I have made it to senior status I am concerned about getting hurt from the recoil of the cannons we have.

I just sold a 375 HH and am even complaining about the recoil from a 300 Win M.

Can't wait for the snow to melt so I can get out.

T/C Encore in .260 Rem., Savage 110 in .243, or Savage in .260.
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/22/15
99, An uncle of mine had a 71 in .348, I really wanted it, but he gave it to his son in law.. he sold if for beer..

I have a bunch of friends in Pa. they favored the Model 70 in .270.. The old 06 was the goal of most Pa. hunters I visited with.. When the 99 hit the market in .284, I had a bunch of relatives that bought that rifle.. I suppose 6 to 10 went for that one..
Posted By: bea175 Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/22/15
I if had to pick a rifle to hunt your state it would be the same one i use here a light weight 308 or 7x57 Model 700 Rem

Clearfield PA is over 300 miles from Western CT.

When the first Cabelas opened in Hamburg PA we went down to it and stayed overnight.

Now there is a Cabelas near us, only a half hour away.

I carried a PA Machine Gun for years, 308 win with 150 gr PMC soft points. (IIRC, they were Sierra GK's) Lots of deer fell to that rifle...I still have it. I am in the process of rejuvenating it a bit. Going to get a new set of Boyd's furniture. It will also get a Leupold VX-1 with the Heavy duplex (or maybe a German #1, just because...)

Most of my kin carries Lever guns and slides, varying chambering from 222 Rem (thats a bolt) 243 Win, 30-30, 308, 30-06 and *shudder* 270 Win.

My last deer in PA was killed with the rifle in my sig line. It's a 6.5x47 Lapua, had to use it since it was a new build... laugh

my 7600 carbine 35 whelen with a 2-7x32 elite on talley lows is about perfect. its known as The Meatmaster.
Posted By: steve99 Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/22/15
A Savage Model 99 R in 300 Sav or a Model F in 308W.
Posted By: Blackheart Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
I'd carry the same old Win. 94 .30-30 I've killed shyt tons of deer with in NY. Pretty sure it'd kill Pa. deer just as dead.
Posted By: Jericho Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
I wonder how many bar fights have started in PA when discussing 30-30 WIN VS 35 REM.
Posted By: Dale K Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
Savage 99 in 358 or Ruger 77 in 270 are the main choices, sometimes a 94 Win in 32 Spl.

30-30 vs 35 Rem? Except for me and a couple of handgunners, I can't think of anybody I've ever hunted with that carries anything bigger than a 30 caliber. 243, 6mm Rem, 270, 300 Sav, 30-30, 30-06, and 308 are about it.

Some of the old timers I knew in the 60's carried the .35 rem.. One bolt action model 30 Rem. and a couple Remington pumps.. I suppose the 14 and 141... The very best deer hunter I knew as a kid carried the .35 in a pump, but he also had a model 721 Rem. in a wildcat .300 mag.. He had both ends of the hunt covered..

Not everyone, just 99%. smile

I don't see many guys toting a 760/7600 around here anymore. Once upon a time they did. I carried a 700 in 7mag for 25 yrs, but have downsized to a .280 as my primary. I have a 7 saum and a ss mt guide in .243 waiting in the wings, but I've yet to shoot either.
Posted By: roninflag Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
I have not hunted in Pa. ; but would like to. i have two remington 700 mtn rifles one in 30-06 ( 2.5-8 leup) and one in .280. ron
Posted By: atomchaser Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
I started out with an Amish Machine Gun in 35 Rem as a kid but have used a 260 Rem for about the last 8 years. It's light weight and accurate. The only you give up is the ability to really rip way at one running through the laurel.
Posted By: moosemike Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
My Remington 700 BDL.30-06. I have spent a lot of years with a Remington 760.30-06. But I preferred 150 grain Power Points to the wildly popular 180 Core -Lokt RN's.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
I lived in Pennsylvania for 20 years and most of that time found me carrying a Browning B-78 single shot .30-06 or a M1952 Mannlicher-Schoenauer .257 Roberts. A M94 .30-30 stood ready for nasty weather days. My GF liked my Winchester M54 .30-30 bolt gun until I got her a Ruger lightweight 77 .257 Roberts. Truth be told, I killed about as many with a .50 flintlock as I did with the rest of them.
Posted By: Billu Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
I bought a Remington 7600 in 35 whelen back in the early 90's for black bear hunting in PA. Turns out it works great on whitetails as well. Has always dropped them where they stood using my 250 grain handloads.

BLR in 223.

Rem. Ti., 260, 3-9 Swarovski. This one gets the most exersize.

Win 94 30-30 top eject with a side mounted weaver 4X I bought when I was 16. Many were using western auto sold revelations. Haven't hunted back in PA for years. I need to get back.....
Posted By: MGunns Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/23/15
And RN Corelokts of course.....
Posted By: Ken_L Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/24/15
I use a 257 Roberts Ruger Mk II, 260 Remington Model 7, 308 Savage 99 and custom 30-06. Just depends on the weather and mood.
Posted By: TBREW401 Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/24/15
Rem 760 in 270 or 30-06--- what else?
Posted By: TBREW401 Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/24/15
Hell, if it weren't for Pa. and a few other states, the Rem pumps would have been extinct years ago.
Posted By: admin100 Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/24/15
Lived here my whole life,49yrs, and our family seemed to have an unwritten rule. when you started hunting, your parents bought you a 30-30. we all had one, and still do. when you got a little older, you bought your own rifle, mine was a 300 mag,it was the cool thing to do when you were 16 to 18, and indestructible, now that im older, im using a 257 roberts.

And, this matters why?
Posted By: Dillonbuck Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/24/15
Also started with a 30-30 and worked my way to a 300WM. Tried a 760 30-06 that came too cheap (180gr gamekings). Never thought I would like a pump but it worked well, just too heavy and noisy. Now use a Model 660 308 or a T3lite 6.5x55. My grandfather used a 30-30 all his life and thought 30-06 and 270 were too big for deer. Of course he thought the 06 had worked perfect on Germans.
Posted By: moosemike Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/24/15
My Grandpa fought the Nazi's too. He used to tell me "all you need is a .30-30, if you use a .30-06 you'll just hit a tree". laugh

Now that's a Pennsylvania classic-all these guys with their foo-foo Model 70's and 700's wouldn't know a good Pa. deer rifle if someone could get them off the stump long enough to shove it up their fat arse!

Rem mountain rifle in 30-06 w/Leupold 2.5-8(first rifle I ever bought).
Rem model 7 stainless syn. in 7-08 w/Leupold 2.5-8.
Rem 700 bdl stainless syn. in 300wm w/Leupold 3.5-10.
Tikka t3 light in 270 w/redfield 3-9.
Browning abolt stainless stalker in 300wsm w/Leupold 3.5-10.

I like to cycle through them until they get to fill a tag although I find myself happier when I have one of the lighter ones in my hands these days.

You still luggin' around that old .358 fencepost Dale? I ought to buy that off you for $100.00 as a sympathy purchase........
Posted By: gophergunner Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/24/15
Of course, the all time Pa. classic is a Savage Model 99 with an old El-Paso K-4 on it. Remington green box 180 gr. RN loads=bad medicine on deer.

A distant second would be a 760 Cornshucker in 30-06 with some big ol' Holden Ironsighter see through mounts and the cheapest 3x-9x scope on it that money can buy. Sight in/schmite in-who needs to do that? It was bore sighted 30 years ago right? I've got about 7 different loads mixed up in my pocket, so one of these must be the lucky bullet...........Has anyone seen my spare 20 round clip? (Pass me another Iron City while your at it.......)

30 years ago they were dominant in PA. Most of the 20 hunters in our PA deer camp carried 760s in .30-06 (and a couple of 99s in .300 Savage). Today it's 7 or 8 hunters and they all carry bolts. Grice has dozens of 760s on the used racks. It's sad to see them being traded in. They are still good rifles for woods hunting - powerful, accurate and fast. But, it's definitely shifted to bolt guns in larger-than-necessary calibers.

I use a Model 7 .308. It's light, fast to handle and accurate enough for the occasional longer shot.

Have not been back for deer season the past couple of years but for 40 or so seasons I carried a Ruger bolt action 30-06 or later on a 700 Ti 7mm-08 they both did the job.

My uncle Charlie killed more big bucks than most with his old Savage bolt action in 30-30 when he got to retirement he switched to a 760 in 06.
Posted By: NJelksmacker Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/24/15
Weatherby Ultralight in 06 or a Browning BLR in 308.
Posted By: thumbcocker Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/25/15
Remington 700 bdl 270.
Posted By: Sykotik Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/25/15
I have all of 2 deer rifles.... Remington 760 Carbine in '06 and a Glenfield Model 30A in 30-30. They have accounted for quite a few deer over the past 33 years.
I will be hunting PA for the first time this year and I plan on using my 7600 carbine in 30-06. It will have a 1.75-6X32 Leupold on it.
Posted By: wyoming260 Re: Pa whitetail rifle - 02/25/15
Most useful guns I think there are small light .308s. My uncle and his wife and kids killed a pile of deer with 600 remingtons and model 7s with 4x scopes. I used an assortment of guns while I lived there. Most of the deer I killed while living there were with a xp 100 pistol in 7br..........
