Guys, I'm developing a load for a mule deer hunt this fall. I've got a couple of good accurate loads with a 140 grain Sierra game King boat tail spitzer. I'll be shooting it out of a 270 wsm. I loaded it to 3000 fps at the muzzle and it shot great. Stepped the charge up 1 grain and to 3050, and it remained accurate. Any concerns with driving this bullet at these speeds? I have buddies that used to shoot the federal premium factory loads in 7 mag, and the published speed for that factory sierra load was 3110 fps. They killed truck loads of deer with those loads.

By the way, I normally shoot a 130 grain core lokt at 3100 fps muzzle velocity with excellent results on whitetails, but figured the Sierra would be a better choice for longer ranges out west. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I don't know about the 270, but last year I used some 165 gr HP's in a 300 WSM at a shade over 3000. It worked great on the deer I got at 125 yds.

I have shot deer with 140 Sierra HPBT in my 270 win.. Worked fine.. I has even more deer with my 7 mag.s and Sierra 140's, and dozens with 150's and 165 HPBT in .30 cal.. I would say either the 130 or the 140 would work fine on mulies..Shots do tend to be a bit longer here, but usually with in the point blank range of the 270 or .270 wsm.. My next buy for my .270 I planned to go to the 130 grain Sierra BT.. It has been killing deer for more than 60 years, both here and on the east coast.

Deer don't really care what brand bullet you use, they just aren't that hard to kill . Cup and core bullets is all you ever need for deer and Sierra is one of the best.

Your load will kill no question. You're velocity is a bit on the slow side for the WSM, but if its accurate, who cares. The deer certainly won't know the difference. The 270win was killing with that long before the deer knew the WSM.

bea175 nailed it when he said deer just aren't that hard to kill. Any major brand of bullet made for deer will work. Still, if your going to slam any non premium bullet at high velocity into a deer at close range it's best to avoid hitting the eating meat. At least that's my experience.

Thanks. I've have a lot of experience with cup and core bullets and how they perform on game. I mainly was looking to see if any of you guys had any experience with the .277 140 grain game King btsp loaded at that MV and how it performed on game. Thanks for the feedback.

concerns? Yes. Gamekings are great but without a reputation for being well bonded. I think you may be driving them a bit fast. When heavy for caliber, driven very modestly I think there is nothing finer. My 2 cents.

+1. That is how I load them and I get very good results. I can see them working well at a higher velocity though.

I've shot a bunch of deer with .277" Gamekings at or around 3000fps, and none of the deer have complained about it.

It'll do fine, just try to avoid the major bones with them. They work even if you DO hit a major bone, though.
