Took my wife out deer hunting this afternoon. We decided to head higher up to see if we could glass up some mule deer. No luck glassing but saw some beautiful country. We stumbled onto this buck and she shot him right behind the shoulder at about 100 yds. She shoots a Remington 700 stainless in 300wsm. Bullet was 180 gr Sierra Gameking, I know they aren't suppose to kill.

At the shot the buck kicked his legs and ran straight down into the canyon 4-500 yds. He did die on the only flat spot, so that was nice for the quartering job. Blood trail was easy to follow he was spraying out both holes.

5 hours later she is still grinning. This was her biggest buck, so far.

She's a good woman to shoot a 300! Nice shot.

Thanks. That 300 is her lucky rifle. She has killed a pile of deer with it, her one cow elk, black bear, and a big shiras moose last year.

I bought her a 7mm-08, she killed 3 deer with it, but thought the caliber was too wimpy so we sent it down the road.

Tell her congrats for me, too. Nice deer.

I shot a 300 WSM for years and have killed a truckload of deer and elk with it. The recoil isn't unmanageable at all. With any bullet, it'll be about 200 fps faster than a 30-06 and just slightly under a 300 Mag. I switched to a 30-06 simply because I went to a lighter weight gun. After well over 10 years of shooting the 300, I can honestly say that I never shot an animal that couldn't have been taken just as well with a 30-06.

Nice buck. Rough looking spot there. Is it all steep and rocky?

No, there is slick bear grass, 15 foot tall brush, and blowdowns the elk can't even get through. Other than that not to bad.

A 300 WSM isn't that big of a deal. When shooting at game, you'll never even notice the recoil. While practicing, wear a PAST shoulder pad and it'll feel like a 30-06. Admittedly it's overkill for deer but its sure nice for elk.

Haven't found it to be overkill yet, had more waste with the 7mm-08 then the 300. The reason I got rid of it (this is the mrs.) I think if it was to much, he may not have run as far as he did. HAHA! thanks all for the nice comments. I am a one gun kinda girl I guess, for large game anyway. I do feel bad when the hubs wants to buy me new ones but I have to turn him down. I have never felt so comfortable with a rifle in my life and I can honestly say it is an extension of me when hunting. thanks again everyone!
