I'm having a terrible time this year. I've been out scouting with the binos and I have been scouring the property for dinks. I think all the larger bucks have chased them off. What do I do? Here's a picture of the bachelor group that's been spending time out in my back yard all summer. There's an even larger one, Mister Hatrack, that come in late and chases them all out so he can have the pasture to himself. A little guy just doesn't have a chance.
I'm afraid I just won't have a chance this year unless you can come up with a solution.
Lots of also-rans right now on the PA Elk Cam. Novice contestants can study these, keeping in mind they're packing way too much bone to stand a chance of winning, but they give a good idea of what you have to stay under.
I am proud to take the spikes an does off the places I hunt, it helps manage the population and I get to fill the freezer for free. All the Deer in my are basically yellow skinny yellow labs with horns anyway...
Is this based on smallest deer? Or smallest nub on the head?

Photobucket asshattery has sure messed up a bunch of old threads.
I've been stomping through all the prime bedding areas in the off season to run off all the Non Dinkish bucks. Should have a good crop of dinks filling the void.
I won last year. But I had to disqualify myself. I thought it was a doe, far away, when I shot it.
Let's just say I carried it back to the Jeep with one hand...
I done that too Tex, 'cept it was a fairly large doe at 208 yards with my Sharps rifle, I went to get 'her' then saw the baby horn nubs in the hairline, little buck it was, hated to burn a buck tag on that world champ dink, but oh well, i was thankful for the clean kill and meat for the freezer.
OK, I've got my .308 ready to go, a dink within 300 yards, or regular deer within 500, is going to be in trouble.
Took the .45-70 out today and tuned it up in anticipation of a "Biggest bullet/Smallest deer" class. There ought to be some reward where the recoil is as heavy as the deer.....
Had this years winner bed down 20 yards in front of my blind Monday, but I’m going to let him walk for a couple years. Took Binos at 30 yards to see his buttons, and he might have gone 45 pounds on the hoof.
Now this is the contest for me! Last year a youth hunter on our place wounded a small spike... Later in the week I saw the deer limping past my stand, and decided to take him.
Both measured under 3" so I was able to tag it as antlerless.
Maybe this year I'll have a dink to enter! In PA we have antler restrictions, but in Ohio anything goes!
One or the other is not frowned upon, but may I suggest a substantial serving of what is represented in the second picture to accompany an entrant similar in size to the first picture? This will draw notice of the Judge in much more of a positive manner.

Well, not really a Dink. So other than tedthorn's wife's doe and Ingwe's spike, this should be in the lead. It's the only horns as of yet. However, it might take a truck load of Becky for this one to go anywhere.

" truckload of Becky" is the operative phrase....
Brian, you should know better than to enter that...take it to Bill Jordans " Monster Bucks"!
I'll risk Double Secret Probation or even a lifetime ban, but this is the only animal I have killed so far this season. In my defense he was blind in one eye and had a huge infected scar on his face so I felt a mercy killing was called for. I'm sure the concept of a mercy killing on an old run down bull will not be lost (or feared) by the Judge.
I haven't been able to get started, yet. Work has increased tremendously, and I had a pretty severe auto accident back in June that ate up a lot of my leave time I usually use for hunting.
But, I will still have time to give it an honest effort, and a-dinkin' I will go.
I offer it as a reminder of what our treasured contest is all about.......25 lbs of meat.......at the most.....
Live.....
I apologize for not making that clear. I guess some form of tangible apology is in order. I'm guessing apology should be aged 5 to 7 years.
8 years is better and while I admire an honest man coming clean about when that deer was killed... "The Judge" is not encumbered by such ethical dilemmas....that said however an apology aged 8 years in a charred oak barrel should just about cover the 'misunderstanding'....
OK, I've got a true contender. This one won't take more than a case of Blantons. It's doe's (Antlerless) only right now for muzzle loader. Got it this morning. I thought damn sure it was a doe, but it was just the bigger of the two. Turned out to be a 29 pound weakling.

Got my dink slayers ready this past week. Have a remy 700 loaded up with some 220 grainers, and a marlin .45-70....Ya know, those dinks get harder to kill every year.
If I can line up two of them and knock down both is that more, or less points??

The overall score of the antlers will be combined, so ultimately its a bad thing cause you can't win with four antlers vs. two...
Everyone else can quit trying, I just completed the search for the 2017 dink...
Uh-oh....could be a contender but is that bump on the head a budding antler, or a deformity caused by a bullet passing through?
We will need shots of the genitalia to confirm...or....extra bribes to the Judge....
That is the buck bump. I was going to take a picture of the nutsack, but the camera said there was no more room on it to take another picture. evidently that buck was so big, it ate up all my memory...
I zeroed my Guide gun, and a couple others, but this is the main one for dink hunting. .45-70 is the weight range stamped on the gun. 45 to 70 lbs is about the ideal weight range. I am glad I bought this gun..

The judge needs to know that I was actually varmint hunting with my new 218 Bee and I shot this dink in a prairie dog hole, thinking it was a prairie dog. When I found out it was a buck deer, I had to burn my "A" tag.
Hunting season is over for me, but I should at least win the Dink-A-Thon...

Its not that easy...
One does not simply waltz in and win the Dinkathon with a case of mistaken identity....
However, that said, you are officially a contender, so these other yahoos better step up their game....
Wow, you guy are shooting some awesome dinks! I should be shooting dinks this year but I got stuck heading to South Dakota with an old friend to go waterfowl hunting just as freeze up is working it's way out of Canada and through North Dakota. What a sacrifice but I guess i will survive.

Ah Ohhh.......... I might have to up my ante. There will definitely be something for you in Texas. Shrapnel might have me beat. I say it's all down to bribes at this point, but it ain't over until the Fat Dink sings.
The weekend is coming. I might even go out tomorrow night. We're back in bow season now, but if I shoot any bucks, the thing's gonna have at least 8 points or I ain't shooting it. A big fat monster doe would be OK too. There's a nice 10 point running around out there. I saw him last Saturday along with a couple of 8's. Nothing worthy of this fine contest though.
Poobah... correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there had to be hardened antler that was naturally broken thru the skin. These side ways shots of button bucks just don't cut it!

That was my understanding of the rules committee. Many have been disqualified for pulling a strands of hair to get that exposed antler! Poobah----We need a ruling on this.

If it were an honest game, this is what would be a front-runner.

The amount of antler showing must be in inverse proportion to the size and quality of the bribe....
And yet another entry...again member will provide details...they don't know how to post pics, so I did it for them in an effort to give Shrapnel a run for his money
My deplorable daughter Kiera (aka Jack the Mouse) hereby submits her first deer as her dink-a-thon entry. She acknowledges the nubs were too small to photograph, so insisted on a "T Bag Toupee" as "proof of dink" Alas, she forgot the ammo for her 7x57 so had to make due with the XS7 youth 243 "truck gun" that lives in my Yukon.

And that thing on its head is what you think it is.....proof of sex cause nubs were to small to photograph without an electron microscope.
Look out Shrapnel!
Nothing like cheating. Anyone posting pictures of deer with no proof of dinkness is immediately disqualified. Using children and other family members to tug at the heartstrings of a confessed bribable judge is a disqualification for not only this year but many to come. If you can't play by the basic rules to win, you can't play at all.
For those that haven't seen the winner yet, here it is...

Your " Win at any cost" mentality is leading you to be delusional. There is only one delusional person making the rules here, and it is ME!
Went out looking for freezer meat last evening. Walked up on two does and a nice yearling. I shot the delicious one with my wore out 25/35. 1894. First snap misfired. Second try did trick. Think I'll back off on that mainspring tensioner. New mainspring installed. Give a bit more umph! Shot fine at range. But they always do!
Sorry no photo evidence. Just one word, veal!!!! Very Dink worthy. Just a non contestant.
Glad you got a freezer pleaser with the old school rifle...but the status and prestige that go along with winning the Dinkathon cannot be underestimated...

Noteworthy is the 25-35, Killing critters for over 120 years, big and small...
Thanks fellas! I really like that little cartridge. When i got home i got into the old war horse and appears weve got a bit of an headspace issue. So we'll just keep her as a special occassion rifle. Shame as damn bullet went (eventually) right where i aimed. And its easy to carry!!
Off to deep south Texas Friday. Who knows what we'll see!!!
You and the Dinkathon have become a topic at our deer camp. Angus, #3 son, came in from the field and said he was sorely tempted when the buck with 1 inch antlers came out on the Opener. However, shortly after that a nice 10 pointer came out, and kicked his butt out of the field. In retribution, my son shot the 10 pointer.
Sigh!
We have all our buck tags filled here at camp. We took the last one in at 6 PM tonight. Another year has come and gone with nothing to show for it.
Sorry to hear about the 10 pointer but thank your son for not entering it..too many guys post pics of these monster bucks...completely missing the point and spirit of the Dinkathon.
However....if your son is old enough to buy whiskey the Judge may be able to be coerced into a larger than normal submission....
Good looking little buck, but not a contender I don't think. The sack on the head picture should at least get some type of special award. I've been passing on 160" bucks ( everybody sees 160" bucks just out of range, right?) all season waiting for a nice button buck. But can't get them buttons in range. The 160"ers keep chasing them off
Redneck Monday. It was a little chilly and the clouds came, so time for a fire and some Jack. Cooked a tenderloin on the fire after the coals got right.

Had a piece of back strap off of this guy Saturday night. It was "melt in your mouth" tasty.

Elks...you know better than to enter a Monster buck like that...and getting the kid involved to tug at the heart strings doesn't help when the deer is that big and the bribe is as little as it is...
Plus...a .270...really?
You make a mockery of this Sacred Institution.....

How dare you.
Sheesh.....
Yeah,I know.
Did the .270 in remembrance of BobinNH.
As far as the bribe, well, how about a snort of a hot tottie?
I screwed up and totally forgot about this. Did not even think to take a pic of the 160# cull button buck from Sunday. I’ve never seen a deer that big with not even spikes. Nibs only. I can’t even remember the rules, but that’s the crappiest excuse for a 1.5yr old I’ve seen in a while.
Trooper ale "Hallowed" is pretty good, not easy to get..........might be decent bribe material. I let a 100" 8 walk (plus a basket 6) in the rain today.............so I could keep my beer to myself.
I was pretty sure I had it in the bag a few weeks back, but turned out it was two does for the freezer, nothing worthy of an entry yet.:>( Hope springs eternal however, I have untl the end of the month! :>) Cat
This evening I am catching up on my reading and went through the end of this thread. A couple of weeks ago I got a small spike (4 1/4") which I judged to be too big to enter so I didn't even bother taking a picture. My son-in-law and another hunting buddy wanted a small one to turn into tender pepperoni so I obliged. If the pepperoni turns out to be anywhere close to as tasty as the backstrap was it will be super.
Sorry Ingwe it didn't even justify making a bribe on.
Ohio shotgun season starts on Monday. I'm out after a dink. I'm thinking I can scoop this thing with a dink & a bottle Crown. Maybe just a bottle of Crown. Bob

You're going to Ohio? The hell with a dink, shoot a monster and post some pictures. Good luck.
Our gun season opens Saturday, you never know what I'll shoot.

Lemme get this straight..you live in Colorado and you're going to OHIO to hunt???? Sheesh!
Oh, and I dont drink Crown....just bourbon.
I give Crown away to the winners of the Pig Dinkathon....
I've only have 1 brother. I hunt with him and his 2 sons. Dang, I was going to give the Crown back to you. I'm raised a Baptist, strongest thing for me is an iced tea. Bob
Right-click picture, click on "copy image address'' on the menu that appears, paste this address between in either quick reply or full editor
You deserve Ingwe's Blantons for that deer. You could send him the bottle..
I've never had the misfortune of being able to enter a prestige contest such as this one.....until now. Fortune has befallen me, so I enter with not one, but two dinks.
It should also be known that I work 2 jobs in which one is at a liquor store.
It should also be added that my youngest daughter who has had much training and experience in hunting Dinks, exclaimed that these 2 were cute. I respectfully submit factual proof of her expertise in such matters as Dinks. The photo of Her last Black Panther hunt is the proof.
I leave this thread over night and you guys make a mockery of this sacred Institution!
This last page looks more like Bill Jordan's " Monster Bucks" than anything...
I can't believe you would run rough shod over such hallowed ground!
Vic..you REALLY know better. ringworm is just a troll...and K22...while he obviously has good taste in equipment, and a knack for photography, has yet to grasp the concept of a true dink...
If I get my way, my trigger finger might slip and hopefully I'll shoot this massive 10 point that's been hanging around. It's still bow season, but gun season comes in tomorrow. I had the SOB 25 yards from me this morning and couldn't get one off, too much brush in between us. It might be another case of mockery in a few days.
At the rate I'm going, you won't be drinking your own whiskey long. I saw three does today that came within 15 yards of me, and a soft bleat brought them to a halt and looking around.
Nary a Nub.......
If I'm gonna place in this contest, I reckon I'll have to buy my spot....
Dang I'd like to hunt quail again. We used to have them in a arroyo that ran through our old ranch. I had a Monkey Wards 20ga single shot. I'd manage to kill one every 4th or 5th shot....
First time I've been quail hunting in about 12-14 years. There are a couple coveys (Gambels) that hang around our pecan orchard, but I consider them my pets.
Well, it's not a dink. I was posting this in hopes of becoming the biggest loser, but I think Dan, 1Nut, and Ringworm have me beat. I couldn't shoot a dink because he was the only deer I saw last night. I had a dink hanging around this morning, but it was too dark to shoot.

Nice. Shoulda passed on that one and waited for a 40 pounder.
OR... on second thought, fuggit-- shoot that one and drink the bribes. If something small doesn't walk by soon I may remove another bottle of Blanton's from the case under the bar. The case with Ingwe's address on it.
Had 2 dinks following an 8 point yesterday, but they were way too big so I let them walk. One of them had 6" spikes and the other one had 2" spikes. Definitely not shooters.
Oh yea, I let the 8 point walk too, it was just a small basket. I saw my 10 point last night and again this morning. Couldn't get a shot either time, maybe he'll screw up tonight and give me something I can work with. I'm not a stunt shooter like ingwe.
Brian...good call on letting the jumbo sinks walk...but waiting for a 10 point?
You need to get into the spirit of the competition...
It don't take much for me to get a shot at something, even with the little guns, and it dont take much time either...stunt shooting at its best.
But Im heading to Texas with the Heavy Artillery...a 6.8 spc and ( Horrors!) a .30-06 for Nilgai, since Texans seem to be convinced that they are bullet proof...
Finally, I think I might have shot at this. Don't want to take him out though unless the judge/s think he has serious potential.
Had this rack been intact, I'm sure he'd be out of the running. Obviously he has experienced some serious fights over the girls this fall, and with deductions for the broken right side, he just might have a chance. Also, do we have classes for mule deer, white tail, and black tail? This happens to be a mulie. What say ye?
Coues deer hunting in Kansas? Why yes! They migrate up from southern Arizona every year specifically to enter the trajectory path of my bullet. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

You'd need a truck load of bourbon for that to even place

The 10 point is still out there. Plus, I saw a main frame 10, but had some split tines. I couldn't get a real good look at him, but I saw him twice within 12 hours. I've passed up a couple of 8's in hopes of getting a shot at one of the big boys. I still have my shotgun tag, so I might take an 8 point if I get the chance because I still have my bonus buck tag that I can save for a wall hanger. There seems to be a lot of Bambi's wandering around. You never know, if a dink comes along that doesn't have more than an inch of exposed horns, he might just take a slug.
I had to look up what the hell a Nilgai is. They're pretty big. Maybe the Texans are using .270's.
Also, I missed a doe at 130 yards because I suck. But I got this doe on Thursday. It's the only thing I shot last week. We still have all of this week for firearms, then muzzle loader comes in on the 16th.
This is my friend's first deer on his first deer hunt. He made a 350 yard shot on it. At that distance, I had to look at him for forever through 15x binos to determine that he did have an antler!
Alright, here's Colorado Bob's Dink. I think he might have the winner, but I'll have to let the judge determine that. I'm a little curious about the trick shooting that occurred on this hunt.

See above, I posted the pictures for him. He might have a serious contender.
Saw a probable winner this week but did not get any shots. Had to look close to see any horn at all ....... but the deer field dressed at 65 pounds??????? Never seen a button buck that big before. Average here for one would be in the low 40's field dressed. Was this a yearling with very small buttons?????
OK its all sewed up now the fat lady has sung don't even bother trying Dandy Don is singing "turn out the light" Soon to be 3 time consecutive champ!!!
I can match that bribe, he'll just have to wait until the hog hunt. The only photo I can't match is a picture of the junk or the heart. A 12 gauge slug kind of made a mess of the heart. I want to be the only Dink Master----Winner of both the "Dink-a-Thon" and "Pork-A-Thon". Bob
They've been chasing like crazy this past 2 days. I bumped into a nice 8 this morning with his nose to the ground. I was that close to throwing a 240gr cast bullet through his shoulders.
Might just shoot the spike that has been hanging around, he looks much tastier.
Dammit! I know I can never compete with these Dink masters. Tried again this afternoon. Nuthin. Will try again tomorrow. Might be completely out of bribes before the last day...

OK people...look closely at this....THIS is how its done!
And speaking of B&C scoring, friend Shrapnel sent this pic of his Dink in an email directly to the judge ( no booze though...) BUT, it has been OFFICIALLY scored by a real honest-to-god B&C scorer...
OK.. I have to get in on this pursuit of the dink this thread is inspiring, the season's done out here but I am going to give this a go next year for sure. I wonder if you fellas might point a guy in the right direction. I'm not asking for your dink honey holes, I'd like to think I'm better than that but some general advice would be appreciated. Do you guys have success calling in the dinks? Is still hunting an option or is it best to set up a blind? Best of luck to those still looking for the dink of the year
This guy was giving me the stink eye at 200+ yards, you know the look. The you owe me money look. So I started quivering and yanked the fun switch hard with my boogar hook. Smashed him hard and he took off up the hill and then slowed and gave me the stink eye again! Well another yank of the boogar hook and a smack. He went 15 more yards and collapsed. The adrenaline dump was horrendous. Glad I was over gunned with my AR slinging 62gr TSXs.

.22-250 62 gr TTSX = extra style points
Heart the size of a testicle
The obligatory proof junk picture
Most important the bribe
Still looking like the leader to me what say you Ingwe?
Well I screwed up and shot a five point in PA on the first friday... Still have some hunting to do in Ohio as well as a couple special regulation tags in PA... Still looking for my dink.
OK, I've got a true contender. This one won't take more than a case of Blantons. It's doe's (Antlerless) only right now for muzzle loader. Got it this morning. I thought damn sure it was a doe, but it was just the bigger of the two. Turned out to be a 29 pound weakling.
OK, yesterday I returned with a real live dead dink. Though not even a serious contender, it represents my effort, so far, this year.
Our property abuts a small river, easily forded by deer. The other bank is on the leased property of a hunt club that drives it. Apparently, nobody on their side of the river has learned that their deer are running across this "river" to get away from the drives.
I have.
5 deer in two years......I thank you guys over there.... I hear whoopin' and hollerin', finish my coffee, and shoot deer when they walk by, thinking they are safe.....I hope this relationship continues....
The deer are usually not Dinkathon material, but this one came by yesterday and it looks as if this might be my best chance.
Poobs, we'll probably have to talk about a couple things, one being getting this deer competitive, second being for God's sake, don't tell them guys across the river......
OK, yesterday I returned with a real live dead dink. Though not even a serious contender, it represents my effort, so far, this year.

Do you suppose the sight of the stock of your rifle may have killed that dink instead of a bullet....just askin.

Vic knows a good looking stock when he sees one. And the deer die for it.
1nut, I normally don't name rifles, but when it came in, my daughter told me how ugly she thought it was.
I told her it was the same colors that are "official Harley Davidson". She said it looked "Halloweenie", and I could hunt in a pumpkin patch with it.
I asked her if she understood the relationship between Charlie Brown and the Great pumpkin. Her answer was "yes, not much different than yours with deer....".
That rifle has been called the Pumpkin since, and even the guys I hunt with call it that...
I DO see a deer once in a while, though......
And, I do appreciate your taste in McSwirlys. Particulars? Mine is a Howa LW in .308, VX-2 CDS in Talleys.
Vic, Your daughter seems to be a real personality. Intelligent and clever.
Mine is a 60 black, 40 orange hanging on an 8 twist Remington 700 in 260 rem. I love the cartridge and couldn't resist when Big Green decided to get the twist right. I did a little work to it, and it shoots 140 NABs into a nice little cloverleaf with a Leupold 3.5-10 on top. Its a rifle I often reach for.
Love the Howas. One of the most consistently accurate factory rifles I've shot, matching my out-of-the-box experiences with Tikkas...
I have to pay close attention to what she says, lots of "dry" humor, sometimes. She has an opinion and will let you know what it is. Sometimes nicely....
Building a rifle on a 700 action, now. I haven't had too many Remingtons, but friends have had tons of them and they are certainly well supported in the aftermarket.
I'm going with a Pac nor barrel in.308 Win., Timney trigger, Leupold VX5HD 2-10X42, and going to give Grayboe a whirl for the stock, they seem to be pretty good and I got it about 452 weeks sooner than a Mickey. Only thing outstanding now is the barrel.
Good luck with the build. Sounds like a nice rig. I've been looking at the Grayboe offerings. The Outlander looks like it might suit me. Seems like a pretty decent value. Let me know how it turns out.
I just ordered a VX5HD 2-10 for a 7mm-08 700 Mountain Rifle/Ti knock-off. Seems like an excellent scope. We'll see.

So I shot this little twerp today, lone deer, small, looking for corn the turkeys missed under the feeder. I had doubts about it surviving due to snow that’s knee deep on me in the shallow spots. My daughter was with me and wanted to learn how to gut a deer. Had an antlerless tag, shot I shot it with the Creedmoor (more on that later) and it took off. Found it, looked at it, by all accounts a doe. Roll,it over and my daughter says, “is that what I think it is? Yep, it’s a buck. Felt the head and found nubs. Would enter it, but they aren’t visible above the hairline at all. In the words of Brando, “I coulda been a contender!” In any case, my kid wants to be a surgeon, so she got a cervid anatomy lesson, and I kept my pants clean. She’s hooked.. the Creedmoor? A 120 gr. Ballistic tip leaves an entry wound like a grenade when moving at about 2850 at impact, but still exits. Will think twice before using again,
OK..the Judge has been reviewing this thread and the entries therein. Likewise doing a review of his regretfully empty Whiskey cabinet...The contest goes till Jan 31...a final determination will be made and a winner announced at that time.
Sauer LUX-Dural Antinit drilling, complete with a horn trigger guard bow and 22 Hornet einstecklauf and 1.5-6 Hensoldt/Zeiss in claw mounts. It doesn't get much better.
Just a few entries for the top spot and an extremely tough decision for the judge this year. Hardest Yet.
New entry by 260madman was absolutely stellar, but bribes and style points for weaponry were a bit short on the uptake...
Colorado Bobs entry was likewise stellar, borderline stunning...but a shotgun? Besides, he is still basking in the glory of winning the Pig Dinkathon...
dvdgeorge came through as always...super entry, all criteria including junk pics and stunt shooting met, and right proper bribes, plus promise to deliver said bribes...
Stonecutter likewise had a stellar entry, but no bone protruding and the 'nubs' were just too big...and I could only drive his bribe 'in my dreams'...
but the winner is......
SHRAPNEL!!!!
His entry was stunning, documentation was good ( except for no junk pics) but that was made up by being officially scored by a B&C scorer...PLUS Shrap really upped the ante on bribes by offering up his GTO and motorcycle. He also gets style points for using a Win.25-35
Thanks to all who participated...better luck next year!
FYI, Pooh-bah. The Remington 870 is the perfect choice for Ohio. I can go to the cabin in May and hunt Gobblers. Then change the barrel in November and go hunt deer. It fits my 1 gun hunter mode to a T.
The no junk picture should have disqualified the "winner" I really should be 3 time champion and gone out on top....yes that's correct I am officially retiring from the dinkathon. It was a great run Tom Brady like even but I will give others the pleasure of chasing the dink crown. I know once the allotted time has passed I will be a member of the Dinkathon Hall of fame
