I'm sure this has been covered before, but what do the letters stand for in different models of the 336. I've got a plain 336, no suffix, and just wonder what the letters stand for.
From the Marlin Owner forums:

CS .... Carbine Safety
C........ Carbine. 1968 and up
RC......Regular Carbine same as C prior to 1968
T .......Texan. Carbine with straight stock, 20 inch barrel
TS.......Texan Safety with 18.5 inch barrel.
SC.......Sporting Carbine, 20 inch barrel, 2/3 mag tube, pistol grip.
CB.......Cowboy, 24 inch octagon barrel and straight stock.
A.........Prior to 1980 24 inch round barrel PG stock
A........ Most recent, 20 inch PG carbine with birch wood, end cap forend.
W........ 20 inch PG carbine, birch wood, and two barrel bands
Y......... Spikehorn youth model short PG walnut stock 16.5 inch barrel.
LTS...... Texan Safety, 16.25 inch barrel.
Marauder.. same as 336 T except has 16.25" barrel and SG. Roll marked RC.
ER......... Extra Range PG stock in 356 Winchester.
375....... PG stock 20 inch barrel in 375 Win.
XLR.......Stainless steel 24 inch barrel PG laminated stock
CC....... 20 inch carbine with camo pattern birch PG stock
SS........20 inch PG stock Stainless steel.
ZG....... Zane Grey Century PG stock, 22 inch octagon barrel.
336 Octagon.. 22 inch octagon barrel SG stock.
336BL.... big loop lever and laminated PG stock.
I'm Pretty sure you're not referring to the serial number prefix. Just in case, it's date of manufacture.

1946-C
1947-D
1948-E
1949-F
1950-G
1951-H
1952-J
1953-K
1954-L
1955-M
1956-N
1957-P
1958-R
1959-S
1960-T
1961-U
1962-V
1963-W
1964-Y or Z
1965 AA
1966 AB
1967 AC
1968 AD

Thanks, all. That answers all my questions.
I had a 336AS that match your description of a W.
and don't forget all the davidsons specials.

336D - 35 rem 18" blue/walnut ported barrel guide gun style
336SSLTD - same as above but walnut and stainless
336SDT - 30/30 straight stock, laminated, stainless steel 16.5" non-ported barrel
336SDG - same as above but with pistol grip.

i'm sure there are others i missed.

I'm Pretty sure W was specifically manufactured for Wal-Mart.
mine doesn't have a letter. it has a safety but has to be old as i am at least the fourth owner... # is 120***** can someone give me a hand? (hope i'm not stealing the thread.)
From the inta net Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture can be determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100: Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

1988

Any chance we could make this a sticky? I find myself referencing this thread often.
I bought a new Marlin 336 in 1976. It has no letter, but only reads "Marlin Model 336." It is a .30-30 Win.

L.W.

I'd like to see it as a sticky too. I've been here 4 times this week checking both date and model.
just another reference bump.
I've got a couple more ...

30 TK ... Texan K-Mart

Glenfield 30GT ... Glenfield Texan

+1 for the sticky. Great info here
The simplest way is to "bookmark" the thread. Or add to "favorites".

My 30-30 says:

MICRO-GROOVE BARREL-MOD.336 CAL. 30-30 WIN

I can't even locate a serial number on it. How do I tell it's age?

Your serial number is likely on the tang under the stock. They are usually on the lower tang as well as the side of the upper where the hammer goes through.

I have two 336's from the 50's and that's where their serial numbers are located.
I have a 336 RC serial number W 6844 that I would like to find a butt stock for it. It has the straight grip not a pistol grip. I made a terrible mistake when I had the stock shorten for a young girl to hunt with it & then she wanted to hunt with my 30-06. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually the no letter prefix began in 1968. Earlier ones that year were ADxxxxx, then they transitioned to 68 xxxx and retained this system to about '73, then began the first two -100 system until bought out and changed to Remingtons marking system.

Sometimes poop happens. I have a 39A Mountie clearly marked with a serial # 1Cxxxxx. It was perhaps a mis strike of an AC (67), but the leg of the a is perfectly vertical making a perfect 1, which leads me to think an employee was screwing with the inspector and got away with it. There is no trace of the other leg from an A, nor is there any remnant of the cross bar.??
