Is this a Texan ?

336 44 Magnum











Serial # AC208XX

The Marlin bullseye has been replaced with a wood plug sanded flush as has a sling stud hole in the forearm. The front sight is not original. Scattered freckling/light pitting on receiver & lever.

This rifle defies the 336/44 mag stereotype in that it feeds & functions fine with all types of 44mag/44spl ammo that I have fed it. It even groups good with hardcast lead boolits despite it's Micro-Groove rifling.

Is it in fact a Texan ? Value ?

Being a 1967 marlin 336,I'd call it a Texan....not sure what it's worth though,I'm guessing $400ish?

Well , it doesn't say 336T on it , just 336 44 Magnum. Also it has the rounded lever , not the square ended lever.

The 2004 Standard Catalog says on page 711 ;

"Model 336 .44 Magnum
This is the 336 "Marauder" with a 20" Micro-Groove barrel chambered for the .44 Magnum cartridge. It holds 10 shots and was introduced in 1963"

I'm confused , is it a Marauder , a Texan , or a redheaded step-child ?

It most certainly isn't a Marauder and that Standard Catalog description is ridiculous. The rifle in question is a Model 336- 44 magnum, that's what it is.

Technically, it's configuration is a "Texan" (straight grip) but it's not designated a 336T. My Marauder is marked "Model 336 R.C. .35 Remington" on the barrel yet, if anything, it should be marked Model 336T since it is a straight grip stock. Additionally, how could it be a R.C. (Regular Carbine) when it has a 16.25 inch barrel?

Mike, don't try to make sense out of Marlin barrel designations, you WILL make yourself crazy. With that gun, be thankful that it functions well. Most didn't. I had one in mint condition, and there was a reason for that. It didn't work.

Just looked in the Gun Traders Guide and they list the gun as a variation of the 336T, as might be expected. They're saying excellent condition: $233 but they don't differentiate price as to caliber, just as a 336T. NIB:$324. That seems low.

I sold my mint gun like that for $350 some years ago, as an example. I guess it's pretty much whatever a buyer is willing to spend.

I'd call it a Texan and I'd buy one in a heartbeat for 350.00. Last one I saw was over 600.00.

From my experience none of the straight grip 336 rifles were ever marked 336T. There was a 336TS, 336LTS, but never a T. Any straight grip 336 with a square or rounded lever is a Texan though.

When in doubt, go to known references. Both Brophy and Murray show that to be a Texan made in 1967, the last year of 336T production in the .44 Mag Cal. Featuring: 20" bbl, full mag, round lever, 2 bbl bands, fluted straight stock w/ white butt spacer, ramp front w/ hood, brass saddle ring, gold plated trigger = TEXAN. May not be marked 336T but TEXAN as far as I can see. There was a 336 "Magnum" but by 67 they were Texans.

What TnBigBore said. Add the KT(K-Mart special) to the list. Most all of the early 336 20" guns with full length magazine tubes were marked RC, for regular carbine, whether pistol or straight (Texan) gripped. Jack

Straight grip makes it a Texan. None of my Texans are marked 336t...

They switched from round lever to square lever in 70 i believe.

I managed to pick up a VERY clean 1980 vintage Texan in 30-30 today for $275. I need a 30-30 like a hole in the head, but it spoke to me.

Pistol caliber Marlins are significantly higher in value/cost where I live and that would probably sell for $500-$650. Maybe more.

What you have is a very RARE Saddle Ring Texan.Those bring $800.00 and UP on GB!!!!

Yes, your .44 is a 20" bbl'd Texan. (1963-64 Marauder's had a 16-1/4" bbl).

FWIW, the .44 Texan was only made 1965-67, and the saddle ring was issue from 1965-71.

The Texan's rounded lever loop was changed to a squared-off loop in 1984, with the addition of the crossbolt safety (CBS). (1984-87)

They changed to the square lever well before 1984. I have several from the 1970's with square levers.
