Was the bullet accurate, hard to work up a load for?

I finally found some LeverEvolution powder, and with 35.5 gr and the 160 gr Flex tip bullet, my Marlin 336 is now sub-MOA at 100 yds. According to the Hornady load data, that is a max load, so approach with caution. I got nearly the same accuracy with 34.5 gr and will decide on a final load once I chronograph both. If the lower load isn't much slower, I will use it just due to the lower pressure. With most of my shots here in Missouri being under 100 yds, I don't need that much energy, but knowing that the Marlin will do the job at 200 - 250 yds on the rare long shot could easily make it my go- to gun!
When I shot the factory LeverEvolution ammo, my Marlin was more of a 2-MOA gun, but really seems to like the reloads, using the same powder and bullets, better. Good for me since I can now load up a bunch of ammo and save some money!

I settled on 34.5 grains of powder, and my 336 is also sub-moa.

I used to swear by these until I saw bad lots that would spiral out of control.

I switched to Winchester Powermax hollowpoint and never looked back. Bullet performance is awesome

Does anyone have the same results with Winchester 94?

I am not sure what it is called so I will call it the spring plunger in the magazine tube where the bullet nose rest on. I understand in the newer Marlins they put a dimple in it to better hold the tip of the Flex Tip bullets. For those with M94s and older Marlins have you noticed a problem with feeding the Flex Tips?

used this load for my 73 year old sister to kill her moose. one shot 50yrds drt. went in the front of right shoulder, severed the jugular and blew the plumbing off the top of the heart. oil pressure 0 drt. used the flextip in 45-70 on my last two elk. all one shot, 10 to 15 yds run after hit. really like them for tube feeds.

Leaving them in the tube for a long time will cause the tips to deform, at least they did in mine. If I'm leaving it loaded for extended periods, like in my truck all summer, I load with Win Silver Tips. In the dense cover around here, nothing ever knows the difference. I do like the LeverEvolutions for deer though, amazing penetration the old .30-30 has.

Hornadies latest manual shows 37.0 under the 160.
I'm using 36.0 and getting 2288fps from a 20" barrel and getting excellent accuracy.
I'm also using 36.0 under the nosler 170 partition and getting super accuracy.
If I zero the 170s dead on at 100 the 160 ftx lands about 1.5" above it.
Just for giggles thinking of carrying both in the field. Figure on using the partition for drives through heavy brush where shots are often under 25yds.
Then sliding in the 160s for end of day sitting on a logging road where open shots can be an easy 200 yds.

So, the consensus is that the 160 FTX is a fairly tough bullet at 30-30 speed? Has anyone found the low velocity threshold for expansion on game?

I've been using 34 grns. W748, Win. case and primers, and 170 Partitions & Speer Hot Core to good effect in the brushy woods I've been hunting the last several seasons. Effective and accuracy at 100 yds.is quite good. Marlin 336.

I think it'e helpful to include as much pertinent data as possible in these reloading posts; such as primer, case , bullet make, rifle model etc.

I recall having to shorten the the brass length??? What do you trim to when loading the 160 flex tips in 30/30 win??

I use Hodgdon's loading data concerning charge weight, WW case, WW primer. This load was tested by Hodgdon and was under the SAMMI pressure limit. Good enough for me. Why push the 30-30 when you could just select another chambering?

the shorter case length applies to the 45-70 not the 30-30. and then only in 95 marlins.

it applies to the 450 marlin,as well.
