Looking for advice on which scope to put on my 336 30-30. I am in between a Leupold 1.5-5x20mm or 1.75-6x32mm. Looking for advice/pictures on the matter. Also, what is the best base and ring mounting system for one of these scopes. Thanks guys!

I think it is a bit of a toss up on those two Leupolds. I have a 1.5-5 and like it. The 32mm objective on the other one will give you better low light performance and probably a wider field of view. I have a Weaver 2.5x with post reticule on my 35Rem. I think anything much over 4x on these rifles is overkill, but if you twisted my arm I think I'd go with the 1.5-5x. Just a little "cleaner" looking on a lever gun in my opinion.

Mounts are very personal. I like Weaver and Talley style. Have had poor experiences on two Burris/Redfield twist in style. The Leupold QRW rings and bases give good repeatability taking the scope on and off. The Talleys repeat well if you get the rings with the levers and are a little narrower.

Good advice. I like the little 2.5X Weaver Classic, which unfortunately has been discontinued. Another good one, with excellent optics, is the 1-3 Weaver Classic, now on sale at Midway. A lower power scope, mounted as low over the bore as possible, is the way to go on a levergun.

2.5X Weaver in aluminum "KWIK-SITE" rings. Marlin 336 in .30-30. Excellent mount set up.

336SC, also in .30-30, with an older 3X Lyman. "KWIK-SITE" low rings on a Weaver base.

I have a 1.5-5x20 on my 336. Nice down tight on the receiver scope, but pee poor low light performance. If low light work will be part of the deal I'd opt for a 32-42mm objective. No questions.

I have a 1-3x20mm Weaver on my 336 .35 Rem it's a nice scope but does not compare to the 1.75-6x32 Leupold on my .358 Win. The 1.75-6 is a great scope, very good in low light, great field of view and the ability to zoom if you need to thread the needle.
Posted By: Okie19 Re: Marlin 336 Scope? - 12/02/13
Thanks for the input guys. Bearcat, would you mind posting a pic of your .358 win setup?
Posted By: Okie19 Re: Marlin 336 Scope? - 12/04/13
I decided to go with the 1.5-5x20. Has anyone used the Tally lightweights with this setup?

very good scope, I had one on my Ruger RSI 270 Win. it was a near perfect set-up for the kind of hunting that I do.
Posted By: toby2 Re: Marlin 336 Scope? - 12/05/13
I think the 1.75-6 has a bit more ring mounting space than a 1.5-5. I don't see how you could go wrong with either. I'm amazed how many 336s have sky high see-through mounts.I bought a used one that even had the old pivot style mount that was hinged and you could fold the scope over to us the open sights. The scope was a Redfield 2 3/4 Wideview. The 30-30 is long gone but the scope is still one of my favorites and is currently mounted on a 45-70 guidegun.

Tasco 3-9x50 is about right for that rig...

Running a Leupold 1-4x on mine right now that Dad gave me (the scope). I ain't fussing!

All good choices Okie, I went with the same idea on my 375 Marlin (it's basically a 336 in 375 Winchester)but used a Pentax 1.75-5 x 20 in weaver rings on a weaver 1 pc base.
Posted By: 9112 Re: Marlin 336 Scope? - 01/14/14
I had an older Weaver K4 that I put on my 336SC (1961). Leupold one piece base and weaver low rings. I love those old Weavers.

Here is one with the Talley LW you asked about with a vx1 2-7x32

That's the same scope I have on my .35 Remington sc.

I'm going more and more to fixed power scopes. They are simplicity itself, and very reliable.

I have a fixed 4X Leupold on my 35 Rem 336 and it seems just about perfect. You may want to consider it, along with the Weaver 4X which is an excellent scope and very affordable.

Leupold M8 4x compact on my 336.....I would choose the 1.5x5 if I was go with a variable. I like Leupold QR mounts.......if something happens to the scope I can always pull it and use the sights instead of heading home.
Posted By: jt402 Re: Marlin 336 Scope? - 01/29/14
IMHO, worth what it cost you, is that much over 4X on a .30-30 or .35 tends to make one try stuff that the cartridges were never intended to do. I would draw the line at 2-7. The 1.5-5 is a great scope and you will enjoy it.

BTW, I practice what I preach. I have ten Marlin levers from .22 to .35. The only one with more than 4X on it is a .219 Zipper. I would have preferred a 2-7, but I had a couple of unemployed 3-9s in a drawer, so it wears one of those.

Save your money on the expensive lever rings/mounts. Use a Weaver style base from the maker of your choice and the rings of your choice . Nearly all these type rings can be removed with a quarter, a key head, or a Swiss Army/Leatherman. They all return to zero quite well. quarter snug at instillation is good enough.

I've had a 336 in 30-30 since the late 70s and have always had a 4X Weaver on it with good results. But I've just bought a 336 in .35 Remington here on the Campfire, and I want to mount a scope on it. I've been looking at a Bushnell Legend Ultra HD in the 1.75-5 X 32. Does anyone have any experience with this scope, or any opinions on Bushnell, in general? I've never owned a Bushnell, but it looks like a good scope for the $. Any opinions or help? Thanks

I just picked up a Savage 99 in 284 that came to me with a 1960'ish scope that I had to research to learn about. Very interesting read. The scope is a Prominar 4x. The reviews left me thinking it may be something special. It's very clear and bright, when found they generally are cheap since unheard of, seem to be well respected by shooters. I am impressed with the clarity, but have not fired anything with it attached as of yet. Always interested in an unusual sleeper...

I use an older Redfield 1-4X, 20mm scope on my 336Y. It has worked well for 11 years now, and looks great as well.
Posted By: Vic_in_Va Re: Marlin 336 Scope? - 02/17/14
Two weaknesses I see in this scope as compared to the 1-4X20 is the more critical eyebox, and the more narrow field of view.

It's pluses are that it is lighter and much more robust, and it has about 248 feet of eye relief. Actually about 5 inches. Important on a hard kicker.

On a .30-30, I'd be all over the 1-4X20 VX-2 by Leupold, like this one on my .44 Mag.

Sorry to be a latecomer, my 336 in.35 REM wears a Leopold 2-7 in Weaver mounts. I added a leather strap on comb so my eye comes up right to the scope. With the new Hornady ammo it shoots like a dream.

Really like the Leupy 2-7's Ruger .44 Mag. Carbine wears a VX-1 Heavy Duplex and the 336 .35 Rem. wears a VX-II with #4 reticle.

My .35 is a SC and has the same scope on it, also use the Hornady ammo.

The Leupy VX3 1.5-5x20 with heavy duplex is a fvorite of mine.

I have used Leupy 1-4x20s and a Weaver Classic 2.5x20 many times also. No complaints.......

A 2-7 will work also if you gotta have more power, but they are more scope than I prefer:

The new Leupy VX-1 shotgun scope with heavy duplex is a great scope for the money IMO. Right at home on brush guns.....

My older Glenfield has a Simmons 2-7X scope which I like very much. Bright and clear optics plus sturdy construction.

I just mounted a vintage Lyman 2.5x post-style reticle scope on a 1957 336SC in 30-30.

Looks sweet to me. Cant wait to sight it in.

Stuck an old Burris 3-9x32 on mine with a Leupold base and Weaver rings. Looks good but I think it's a little heavy.

2muchgun,

I am surprised to see a Weaver 2X-7X mounted on one of your Marlin rifles, most of your posted pictures show you using mostly Leopold.

How do you like the Weaver scope?

I just installed a Weaver Classic V-Series 1-3X20 on my .35 336 using 1-piece Talley ring/bases. Love the look. Just gotta go shoot it in now.

This is a Warne 20 MOA rail, and Seekins rings holding a Vari-X III with turrets.

The rail is long enough to get the scope somewhat forward of the hammer. A fixed power would be able to go further forward without the power ring.

I only kept the scope onboard for a short time. Wanted to keep it slim/trim, and went to XS ghost ring sights.

Here's a pic of a friend from the UK shooting the irons.

Low and forward is what you want. Power low to shoot w/both eyes open. Big obvious aiming point (reticle). Leupold Scout scope with German #4 reticle mounted as low as possible on XS rail with ghost ring "peep" sight and white line front sight.
