bought an old Marlin today, marked 1936 on the tang, its a 32 spl. Ser# 786X, still has some case color on the lever & reciver, Nice stock, some fig in the butt stock. 20 in. barrel shotgun butt, anyone have a year date on this? I thought it was a 93 It has a very old Stith mount and weaver scope on it 1st marlin Iv seen one on. Just a cool old rifle that I plan on hunting with!
1936 to 1941, post war guns are marked 36.
Yours was made between 1936 and 1940.
Thanks thats the plan! 1st 32 spl. iv owned! so, some stuff to learn, but that part of the fun.
I kind of want a 32 Special, no reason other than I like levers.
Me Too! I did kinda think of you today Scott, there was a Marlin in 357, with a 18" barrel! looked new but was at $750.00 I had planed to get a Marlin in 35 rem. well that was the plan. almost got side tracked with a Marlin in 38-40, but the inside of the barrel was well worn! Happy with this 32 tho!
If the serial number had no letter prefix it was made in 1936 and worth a little more as it was actually a Model 93 spring wise.
Thanks it just has the 4 digit Ser#
Sounds a treat, John! You're on your own for bullets though. I can't help you with this one! Any chance of posting some pics?
I could text some from my phone if somebody would care to post them!

I disagree with that. B prefix didn't begin until 1941.
You are correct. The 1936 designation was only used for two years. Then it became a model 36.First variation 1936`s were the same as the model 93`s except for a dovetailed front sight and a pistol gripped stock instead of a straight one.The 1936 was also drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The first variations also had a flat butt plate with a fluted comb.Information from Lt.Col.William S. Brophy`s Book Marlin Firearms.Marlin also had a habit of using up old stock, barrels, actions ect.in newer models. That is why you will find barrels marked 1936A or model 36A on RC`s.Huntz
Been cutting wood, yes this one is missing the front sight, its dovetailed, and is D&T for a tang sight! sun came out Ill try to get a few pics after a rest!
Thanks Scott! Guess a Collector will Cringe at the scope mount, but back in the day, I think the guns owner was pretty happy! old weaver with a post, still clear! the 1936 stamp is under the Marlin, best my cam could do, its nice and clear stamped tho!
Thats the first variation.Nice case coloring and decent wood.Plus its not a carbine, but instead a SC.Good snag!!!!
Here is my 1936A.

Oddly enough my 1936 had an awful trigger.
