could that scout rail be taken off and a regular base and ring set-up be added without having to drill and tap any new holes ?
I don't like serrated knives and every time I see The sbl it looks like a rifle with a serrated knife bolted upside down on the back of the gun.
OR
can the rail be cut off at the receiver and the rear sight be put where it is supposed to be and mount the scope where it belongs? Just wondering ?

You should be able to just take it off and do whatever you want with it and the rifle. The SBL is expensive though (and it just increased in price for 2010), and I wonder if it wouldn't just be cheaper to buy a stainless rifle and cut down the barrel to what you want.

Or, look at the GBL. Sounds like what you want. It's essentially the same as the SBL but blued steel, and with regular open sights. You can add a rail to the receiver and carry on.

Is this something like you're looking for? This has an 18 1/2" barrel with pistol grip.

I didn't even know Marlin made these until a minute ago. Can't comment on the price as I don't keep up with the market on 1895's.

The guide gun rail is just another version of the (yawn) picatinny rail system that some people who love to mount all kinds of gadgets on their rifles cannot do without.
Of course when the batteries are dead, the plastic add ons are broken, and the handling characteristics of the rifle are forgotten, there will be the ancient and ubiquitous levergun, with open sights that need no lithium, cartridges that work with smokeless or black and melted down wheelweights-good for food and defense.
I second the motion of the GBL. Brownells sells the XS sights that will improve both accuracy and speed. What more can one need?

Times must be tough all over. And here I thought lead was supposed to be a health hazard.
