What are your thoughts on this set-up for hogs, deer, elk, bear, etc?

I plan on using ONLY the iron sights.

Mine was a great little gun, short, accurate and quick pointing. I did not like the irons as they were too small for me. I went with a 2-7x32 FFII in Leupold lows and it was a great setup. I wish I would have kept mine.

I thought about it and IF I can't get used to the irons I will put a Leupold 1-4, 1.5-5 on it.

I have an old steel framed one, striaght grip one with a willams peep sight. cool enough rifle.

I think my stainless version will still have an aluminum body on it. I got to thinking it's not a big deal. I was in the Marines and Army infantry for 10 years and owned several AR-15's and I've only seen ONE instance of the aluminum body exploding. I was in the Marines in Kuwait and a guy a couple of fighting holes next to me got a double feed and the upper receiver blew apart. He was actually okay aside from being dazed.

I have been messing with the sights on my .358 BLR for several years. The factory irons are very accurate, but too small for my aging eyes. I went with a Williams receiver & high post front for a couple of years. Finally, this past year, I think I've got it right. Williams fiber optic rear with Marbles fiber optic front (available in lime green, unlike Williams). Then, Weaver scope mounts which are dished, allowing the use of open sights. And finally, a Leupold 1x4 in QD lever mounts. So far, it's working out real well.

Thanks Jim, that might be the ticket if I can't sight in fast enough with them.

Mine wears a Nikon Monarch 2-7x32 and this is pretty quick on target for me.

My BLR 358 has a Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5 in Dednutz mounts.

It's scary accurate with the right handloads. 1.25-1.5" with factory ammo.

Thanks guys, I should be picking it up today and maybe take her to the range today or tomorrow and test her out. Right now all I have is several boxes of the 200 grain Win. Slivertips. I bought dies, but no empty brass yet.

If I can't get used to the tiny sights I will either buy some aftermarket Williams irons or just get a 1-4, 1.5-5 type scope for it.

I have a 358 BLR. GREAT rifle. I'm running 225 PTs with W748 and getting moa at 100. Runs about 2450 also. One of the best handling rifles I own. Quick to point and a lot of power for the package.

my late hunting partner killed over a dozen elk with his 358 win BLR in thirty years he used only one load the 250 grain .358 speer over 44 grains of IMR4064 and a 215 fed primer, he sighted in at 3.5" high at 100 yards ,that put him almost dead on at 200 yards and about 10" low at 300 yards, on shots out to 250 he just held center chest behind the shoulder, he always joked that I carried a CANNON when I used my 340wby or 375 H&H , and he had zero problem using the same rifle and load on mule deer or white tails either.
