I have a Marlin 444 and am looking to possibly add a timber carbine or black shadow to the stable. How do the Win versions compare to the Marlin as far as weight and balance??

Anyone have a timber carbine or black shadow they're interested in selling??

The Winchester 94 AE 444 and the Timber Carbine are fine rifles, and like all Winchesters they are lighter rifles than the Marlins. Recoil seems sharper in my Winchester Big Bores than my Marlins. I will always prefer a Winchester to a Marlin just for no other reason than I like them better, and to me , Winchesters carry better. This is only my opinion. Accuracy in my Winchester 444's is as good as my Marlins. Marlins have grown on me in the past few years though. I don't think you can go wrong with either. The Timber Carbine is one of the nicest levers ever offered in 444 I think. It carries like a dream, which means it gets grabbed out of the safe more often, and being a 444, it can handle about anything in front of it. Grab one if you can.

Don't overlook the 3rd .444 Model 94AE - actually the first .444 Winchester M94AE - the BigBore94 Carbine, with walnut stock, unported 20" bbl & full-length magazine.

IOW, a regular Winchester 94 Carbine on steroids.

I like it better than both the ported .444 Timber Carbine and the ported .450 Timber.

+1 on the 20" model. I have one and it's a very nice rifle. It carries and balances well. Also a great shooter. I have read that the 20" carbine is the rarest of the three. I think they were only made for a year or two.
