Anyone have an idea of current market value of a late model Winchester 71, Deluxe version, no peep sight , 24' barrel, exc condion, 95%+? Saw one not that good at Cabelas in Kansas last week for $1900 approx. Any sources of current market values? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

When you say late model, do you mean real recent production with the tang safety and all, or are you reffering to a 1940's or so model 71? in either case $1900 is steep unless it is a very special model. Hunting grade model 71's still turn up around here for $500-800.00.

Winchester Model 71's not made after 1957 or so, this riflre has never had a safety. I have two Browning replicas and have examined three other originals. The one in question was made in1957 according to seller. Fired less than 1 box of ammo, a box of Remington ammo with a few rounds gone comes with rifle giving some indication of age of piece.

Are you willing to pay $1900 for that rifle? If so, then it's probably worth it.

Me, I wouldn't, but then again, I ain't looking at it.

I don't mean to sound flippant, but it's your $$$ and a rifle that you are looking at. I have a feeling that I'd spend more on certain guns than you would, and vice versa.

So, if you've got it and you want it, then get it, price be damned.

I always keep an eye out for a good model 71, and I have to say that prices have been rising substantially. An original model 71 in the condition you describe is going to bring over $1600 with no difficulty at all, especially if the sling swivels are still with the gun. If the gun has been drilled, or had a recoil pad installed then it will be in the neighborhood of $1000.

The only sure bet is that a nice Model 71 is going to cost more next year.

Blue Book Value for an unadulterated 1957 vintage Deluxe Model in 95% condition is very close to $1,400.

Blue Book is always lower than the real price on quality fireams. I would snap it up at $1,400. Expect to pay $1,700 after bargaining down from $1,895.00.

Hmmmm, considering what 71s are listed and going for on gunbroker and other auction sites, I'd say that if you want one, and that one looks good, get it. Take a look for yourself and see.

I take it Winchester Model 71 carbines are as rare as hen's teeth with gold caps.. so I don't have to worry about finding one that I'll need to buy? I'd like to get an older redfield sight for my new old rifle and don't really like dealing with ebay type sources, any suggestions? I've put a new Lyman on my Browning rifle and have ordered a Williams target model to try out, but I like the more substantial appearance of the older Redfield receiver sights I've seen on these rifles. I think I'm safe from those other afflictions (models#etcs) as I tend to get only those items I can rationalize a good use for... now I'm safe to go to the outhouse at my hunting cabin and not worry about rogue bears hiding in the bushes while I have my trusty 348 Win in hand <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Well, that is until you discover 1886s in .45-70 or .45-90.

If you want a .358 to hunt with (not a collector) why not buy one in .308 and have it re-bored or re-barreled? Lots of 308's out there cheap.

Any idea how much this would cost, better with roatary mag or clip loading Savage? Thanks for any info, I think I've got $2or $3 dollars left to burn

Big Bear you can contact this guy via email. He didn't have a redfield receiver site but maybe once he got back to his shop he will find one. Don't know where he gets all that stuff but he had a bunch of sites with him, and I know he is always on the lookout for them. Nice guy. contact him @

Get a copy of rifle magazine. There are several re-boring gunsmiths in the ads in the back. I had a shot out .300WBY barrel re-bored to .340WBY for about $150.00 by Dick Nickel several years ago. It shoots great and I did not haave to worry about barrel contour, etc. Dick passed away recently but his equipment was sold to another smith who is still going strong and there are one or two others doing this. I would personally try to find a clip feed '99 for a number of reasons but the conversion should work just fine with any .308 model 99.

A lot of original 71s are no longer that way.....Recoil pads and side mount scopes are commonly found on many....Result is the minty, original ones are commanding premium prices...Beware of "fake" carbines-there several out there that started as rifles....nice prewar Deluxe rifles are now over the 3K mark....the 71 is arguably the finest Winchester lever ever made, IMO......thankfully, I acquired my Deluxe carbine and rifle before the prices skyrocketed....the longer you wait to scratch your itch, the more you're gonna pay......
