Anyone have any load data for the 425gr beartooth pile driver jr. In the 450 marlin, using IMR4198? Or any 425gr hard cast lead bullet with IMR4198?

OAL of all loads is 2.550"

Starline case
WLR Primer
H4198 (40 grains)
CastPerformance 420 (.459")
1650 fps, very good accuracy, moderate recoil. Bullet goes through a lotta crap.

Same load, substitute Piledriver Jr.(460")
1632 fps, very good accuracy, moderate recoil. If I use this one again, I may add enough powder to bring it up to 1650 fps to see what's up, but still a very good load, and this bullet penetrates very good, too.

For the following load, I used Remington cases that had originally been stretched to 2.4" for the .45-90, and I cut them back to 2.1". The brass is thin and I will only use the case for the one time. And, powder is compressed (about 3%), but it is a stick powder.

AA2495 powder 54.3 grains
Beartooth Piledriver Jr.

1800 fps, good accuracy, dirty barrel (typical of 4895-rate powders in this cartridge) Lotsa-lotsa recoil.

The load can be duplicated by using WW cases.

All same except for case and 55.3 grains powder--Speed is about the same, recoil is bothersome while casually shooting, accuracy is good for the effective range of the load, and I'll reuse these cases. And, I'll probably reduce MV to about 1700 of so fps, 1800 fps is not really needed.

All in all, I'd rather use H322 or H4198. I've used H322 with 300 grain bullets with great results but haven't tried it with the PJ jrs yet. I intend to, but I'm going to run through the AA2495 loads, first.

AS usual, these loads are safe in my rifle, but I can't speak for yours.

Is that load with the H4198 and pile drivers close to max?

I just noticed that your query is for a .450 Marlin, not a .45-70, but the Starline cases in .45-70 are the least capacious, so they oughtta run very similar pressure to the .450.

As for the 40 grain H4198/Piledriver Jr load, it is nowhere near max. That load is running 28 to 29 Kpsi in a .45-70.

I hold my loads to as close to 35.5 Kpsi as I can, and try to never exceed 38.5 Kpsi. I've never needed more performance than that.

Stay under about 1750 fps with H4198/PDjr, and your pressure should be well within what the rifle can handle.

Hodgdon has data that starts at 41 grains with a 400 grain jacketed bullet, and tops out at 45 and some change.
