sold my AK today about 5 minutes after I found a guide gun at the local pawn shop, man do I like the Marlin. no flies on the AK but I am a softy for 1895's and guides in particular. shot it 15 rounds as soon as I got home. it has true buckhorn rear sight that will be going away but with my stout 350gr jacketed loads and my old eyes it was 2.5 right and 6 low. got it up to 2 high on center. nice LOUD little gun.
Something about a 45-70 that just calls to a man, and especially in a lever gun. Good snag. Try it with cast bullets and AA5744 or Trail Boss. I use a 405 grain water quenched home cast. Too much fun.
I also dislike the full buckhorn, but like the Marlin lever guns.
the GG was my first lever gun. got a lot of deer with it. mine shoots great.
The factory sights were the first thing to go on my Guide gun. I am a big fan of the receiver sight, used a Williams, myself.
Right now, I have a Leupold FX-II 2.5X20 UL on mine, but I still have the receiver sights.
I had Skinner sights on mine but switched out to a Leupold m8 2.5x20mm that I really like.
I put a Bushnell banner 1.5x4.5x32 on and like the setup. getting good groups with 47.5g 3031 under a459193 bullet that casts at 395g
also getting very fond of Trail Boss for plinking.
Trail Boss will spoil you.
I have had good groups with H322 and good old IMR 3031.
These being shot with 325+- grain bullets, just plain old lead cast with a gas check.
