For some reason I've been wanting a .375 Win. I've looked at numerous Marlins and 94 Big Bores. Recently a Savage 99 in .375 showed up in the LGS. Looks to be in excellent condition. Has blank in rear site dovetail. Recoil pad was added and is starting to flake. Action kind of stiff still to me. It may have been refinished (if so it was an excellent job) but it looks to me like it has been in a closet somewhere for a long time. What should I look at specifically? Any known issues with this model/caliber combination?
Recoil pad came standard on the 99-375, and I think the 99A had a steel buttplate, but may have been solid rubber. The rear sight is easily replaceable. They didn't make many and its on my bucket list. If you are not familiar with the 99 the last inch or so before the lever locks up will be "stiff", thats where the bolt cams against the receiver. What are they asking?
$599 Recoil pad is black and leaves little pepper sized flakes in your hand. Also it is flattened where it meets the comb. That is what makes me think it's been sitting. This one has the round counter on the left of the receiver.
That is a very good price on those. They don't come around very often.
That's what I was thinking. If I get off on time I plan on swinging by there again today.
For that price it would be mine. If it has a round fore arm with finger grooves on top its a 99-375. They came with a recoil pad.

That's what it is then.
Better grab it quick, or post the LGS where it's at.
Well, how did I do?

Go buy a lottery ticket while you're hot.
You did just fine. You certainly won't lose on that one and oh yeah, buy that lotto ticket as suggested. cool
Nice, very nice! You got a great deal on it to boot. Most of them I've seen lately are over a grand, Cabelas has a .358 version & they're asking $2450 for it! The recoil pad is a replacement so don't feel bad about having a new one fit. The original was ventilated.
That's an original pad. I've had mine for about 25 years and it's extremely accurate and consistent with Win. 200 grain ammo. Also have a 99A saddle gun in .375 that's like new. I have another Savage barrel in 375 that I plan to make into a short carbine. Yeah, I'm a fan. grin You'll love the rifle, and you STOLE IT!! I paid $700 for mine, 25 ish years ago!!!!

"That's an original pad."

Yep you're right. My bad. Prior to this I had only seen ventilated pads like the one on my .358. Looking around a bit more they came both ways. Regardless, helluva deal!
Thanks guys now I just gotta scrounge up some brass and bullets. Got dies on the way. Picked up a pound of H322 today.
Hope you get as lucky on the brass as you did on the rifle !!

.375 Win brass has been going for ultra-premium money lately on the big gun auction site.
Yeah, I'm watching those. Surely somebody can spare 40 or so 1x cases.
Just my luck. Get a great deal on a sweet rifle and then not be able to shoot it for lack of ammo/components.
