How prevalent are broken butt stocks on an 1895 45-70? Mine arrived at my FFL in this condition with it broken into. It is insured for 1k and I haven't picked it up yet. I am not sure what I should do. Suggestions?

Used--purchased from an individual on the 'fire for 780.00 with a Leupold VXII 3x9 scope with the same Leu mounts and rings and 53 pieces of brass for another 20.00. It is a standard 1895 JM model said to be a safe queen shot very little. The receiving FFL dealer called when it arrived to tell me about the broken stock. DF, any insight will be appreciated. Never been down this road before.

You mean the shipping box was broken into and the rifle butt was broken? Since this is insured for $1K you may want to check out some of the horror stories of folks trying to get insurance money for rifles. Who did you insure the package with? Just curious. Also I believe if you fill out the paperwork to transfer to you, then you may not have leverage to return to sender. I am not all that sure tho as I have read many conflicting stories. Hope you get this worked out.
The seller insured it for 1k and his local dealer shipped it.
It's an issue for the seller, since he/she did the insuring.
If the rifle is otherwise ok, consider a replacement butt stock. The butt stock and a matching forearm can be obtained rather easily. You may be able to negotiate a good deal with the seller for yourself.
Cracked stocks are a typical problem of not packing a rifle correctly for shipping. No fault of the rifle.
When I opened the box at Dicks the stock om my 1895 45-70 was also broken. What a shame as the stock had excellent figure and grain in it. even the slaes guy remarked about how nice the wood was! The break was in the wrist. Dicks called marlin and they sent a new replacement stock. The replacement was plain as an amish girl, all function but no fashion!
