Hornady 350 flat point bullet????????

TIA
Anyone?
RL7 or 3031 both give nice performance and accuracy. For you to decide Lad.
I shoot 350 gr. cast bullets in both my 45-70's. I use either IMR 4198 or IMR 4895, with excellent accuracy.
50gr of H4198 has been a good load under various 350s in a Marlin I used to own as well as my current 1886 Winchester

Same here. A good accurate load that thumps pigs hard!
The 45/70 can turn out accurate loads with a range of powders but I find powders in the burning range of 4198 / R7 work quite well with 300-400 gr bullets. They are not fussy powders and show good accuracy over a range of velocities.
I use Winchester cases, CCI 200 primers, I -4198 with that bullet. Depending on what velocity and pressure level you want to go to, that combination can get you from 1500 to just over 2000 fps. My load is just short of 2000 and accurate in my Marlin 1895.
reloader 7 is pretty temperature sensitive, I lost 200 fps from +75 to 0.
2400 has all ways done good with any bullets I have used
I started with H-4198 then moved to RL-7, which is far more consistent/accurate in my rifle.I started to work up loads with RL-10X which is great in some other loads I use, but I lost interest in reloading for a while.

My loads were taken from Elmer.. But I use the 350 Horn. rather than a 405 grain.. Either 3031 or 4895.. I like 53 gr., but think I will drop back a couple grains when I load the next batch...

Not the 350 Hornady, but 41 gr RL-7 under a 525 gr Beartooth Piledriver for 1744 fps in my old Marlin Cowboy if ya need to do real deep. smile

WW brass and a WLR primer.
Guess I'm the odd man out here, I use Varget for my .45-70 loads, but I don't load any 350's, just the 400 grain Speer FP or the 405 Remington. 54 or 55 grains moves them right out, it's accurate...out of the Guide Gun I'd not consider it a good load for extended plinking sessions.
I have used a number of powders all with good results.

RL7, H4198, IMR3031, H4895, Varget, Benchmark, AA5744, Trail Boss. I have loaded both 350 grain FP and RN and find they both shoot accurately out of my Marlin 1895. My favourite loads however are with a home cast 405 grain FP water quenched and driven along with either a light charge (12 gr) of Trial Boss for about 970 ft per second, or 25 grains of AA5744 for about 1300 fps - close to the original load.

My experience is that a almost any load seems to shoot well out of 45-70, and even the water quenched cast bullet penetrates deep.

Have fun and enjoy this classy old gal. smile
